My eyes fluttered open, anticipation coursing through every fiber of my being. After six long months away, I expected to find him there, waiting for me, ready to bridge the distance that had kept us apart. But the bed stretched empty beside me, the sheets cold as winter stone.

My heart plummeted, fracturing into countless shards that cut through my chest. The wolf within me released a sound of pure anguish, a keening wail that echoed through my very bones. The rejection felt physical, crushing my ribs until each breath became a struggle.

He abandoned us, Seraphina. He chose not to be here. Her voice cracked with devastation, reflecting the agony tearing through my soul.

I fought against the reality, desperately clinging to excuses. Maybe he was occupied with urgent business. Maybe he would appear at any moment. But the suffocating quiet of the room demolished those fragile hopes. The silence struck like a violent blow, leaving me gasping.

Icy terror flooded my veins. This nightmare scenario had never crossed my mind during the endless months of separation. My wolf retreated inward, her essence fragmenting under the weight of abandonment.

I refused to surrender to this crushing despair. I needed answers. I needed to find him. Forcing my trembling legs over the edge of the bed, the silk fabric felt oppressive against my skin, like burial cloth.

"This cannot be happening," I breathed into the vacant space. We would not accept defeat. I was going to confront him.

I threw on clothes with shaking hands, each footstep through the packhouse corridors echoing with dread. The once-vibrant hallways, typically alive with joyful conversations, now felt muted and strained, as though everyone was walking on eggshells.

I encountered several pack members along my path, their gazes downcast, absorbed in menial tasks.

"Good morning, Luna," a young male acknowledged me with a cursory bow, his eyes avoiding direct contact. An elderly woman offered a brittle smile that never reached her features. "Welcome back, Luna."

Their responses carried proper courtesy, nothing more. Where was the genuine enthusiasm? The celebration of my return? Their expressions held no authentic pleasure at seeing me again. I might as well have been a stranger they were duty-bound to recognize.

Nausea twisted through my stomach as my wolf’s instincts sharpened, detecting the unnatural tension saturating the atmosphere. This place no longer felt like my sanctuary. This was not the pack I had cherished in my memories. Cold dread crawled across my flesh, raising bumps along my arms.

The administrative corridor stretched before me, my pulse hammering against my throat like a desperate prisoner. Julian’s office door loomed ahead, imposing and sealed. My hand trembled above the polished surface as uncertainty paralyzed me. Drawing a ragged breath, I forced the door open.

There he sat, positioned behind his massive desk with his back toward the window, morning sunlight creating a halo around his dark hair. When he lifted his head, my breathing stopped entirely. His expression remained completely neutral, emotionless.

No sudden movement. No rush to embrace me. No brilliant smile or welcoming arms. Just an arctic stare that met mine without a trace of the reunion I had fantasized about during countless lonely nights.

My wolf strained against my control, desperate to close the distance and reconnect with her mate, but I held her back through sheer willpower.

This man was not the Julian I remembered. This was not the person who had sworn that physical separation could never diminish our bond, whose face would illuminate with pure joy at my mere presence.

This was not an alpha greeting his Luna after six torturous months of separation.

He had transformed into a cold stranger occupying the very space where we had once shared infinite tenderness and passion.

"Julian?" The word barely escaped my lips, thick with bewilderment and mounting horror that made my stomach revolt.

He remained motionless. Yet his eyes revealed a different story entirely. They blazed with something indefinable, a flicker of buried affection, yes, but also raw torment that reflected my wolf’s own suffering.

Like staring into smoldering embers buried beneath glacial ice, fighting to surface. I desperately wanted to decode the secrets concealed within their depths.

"Seraphina," he stated, his tone completely flat, emotionally vacant, contrasting sharply with the fire burning in his gaze. "You have returned."

Another piece of my heart crumbled. "Yes. I am back. I came to find you since you could not be bothered to greet me."

He rose slowly, deliberately, but maintained his position behind the desk, creating a deliberate barrier between us. "I am pleased you have returned," he declared, his stare unwavering, each word carefully measured. He paused, and the room’s atmosphere grew suffocating, dense with unspoken truths that strangled me. "However, if you decide to depart again, you undoubtedly will. This time, I will not plead with you about anything."

His statement cut through me like razor blades, each word carving deeper wounds into my spirit. My wolf released a soundless shriek of pure agony, her essence hemorrhaging.

"Julian, what are you telling me? What is wrong?" My voice fractured as tears burned my eyes, threatening to overflow.

I recognized Julian’s patterns when he was being cruel and foolish, but this felt different. "Please, communicate with me. Something is terribly wrong, I sense it. Just explain what is happening."

I moved forward, desperate to eliminate the space between us, to make physical contact and shatter this frozen wall.

But he shook his head, halting my advance.

"Seraphina," he said, his voice dropping to a menacing growl that sent tremors through my spine. "Close the door when you exit my office."

The oxygen vanished from my lungs in a harsh gasp. He was banishing me. Just like that. After six months. After everything we had shared. My mate. My Julian.

He had no desire for my presence. He refused to talk. He simply wanted me gone.

Tears clouded my vision, but I would not allow them to fall. Not here in front of him.

I spun around, my legs unsteady, and fled from his office, the heavy door slamming shut behind me, severing our connection and extinguishing my final thread of hope.

I wandered aimlessly, my mind spinning, my wolf wailing in absolute despair, raw and primal grief. I had no destination, only the desperate need to escape that suffocating silence, that glacial rejection.

I rounded a corner, struggling to hold myself together and prevent complete dissolution.

Then I froze completely.
