Seraphina’s POV

Julian’s relentless pursuit became a daily torment I couldn’t escape. The gifts started appearing everywhere - wildflowers by my bedroom door, a hand-carved wooden wolf on my windowsill, delicate trinkets that once would have made my heart skip. Now they only reminded me of what I’d lost.

Each gesture felt calculated, desperate. I was a woman betrayed, and though my treacherous heart sometimes quickened at his efforts, I recognized them for what they were - hollow attempts to resurrect something he’d already destroyed.

His approach shifted to tender manipulation. Soft words whispered when he thought I might listen. Meals delivered personally, still warm from the kitchen. My favorite herbal tea prepared exactly how I used to like it. When his eyes found mine across a room, they burned with something raw and pleading. His fingers would reach for mine during conversations, brush stray hair from my face, search desperately for cracks in the armor I’d built around my heart.

But I remained stone. Every kindness he showed only fed the rage simmering beneath my skin. He was chasing the memory of a girl who had worshipped him blindly, a naive fool who no longer walked this earth.

My responses stayed clipped, my expression carefully blank. I watched his frustration mount with each rejection. His jaw would tighten when I turned away, his eyes would flash dangerous when I ignored his presence entirely. Still, he persisted.

The confrontation came after dinner one evening. He trapped me in the narrow hallway, his imposing frame blocking my escape. The scent of pine and raw dominance wrapped around me like chains. His palm pressed against the wall beside my head, caging me without actually touching.

"Seraphina." My name emerged as a gravelly plea. I could sense his wolf clawing at his control, demanding submission I would never give again. "Tell me what it takes. What do I have to do to earn just one real look from you?"

I lifted my gaze, letting him see the wasteland where my love used to live.

"Set me free."

"You are free," he insisted, voice hardening. "Everything you could want exists within these borders."

I shook my head slowly. "No. It doesn’t." The words came out flat, emotionless. "I need you to understand something, Julian. Whatever feelings I had for you died the moment you chose her. I don’t love you anymore. I can’t. You need to let me leave."

His refusal to accept reality only confirmed what I already knew. I was a prisoner in paradise, surrounded by pack members who wore fake smiles and an Alpha who would rather break me than lose me.

Inside, I was already broken.

The pack’s sudden shift in behavior made everything worse. The same wolves who had sneered at me or ignored my existence now offered saccharine greetings and artificial warmth. Their voices dripped honey when they spoke to me, their smiles stretched too wide to be genuine.

I saw through their performance immediately. They were hedging their bets, kissing up to the woman their Alpha refused to release instead of the golden girl they’d always preferred. It disgusted me more than their previous cruelty ever had.

I remained his second choice, even now. They were playing nice because Roxanne wasn’t here to claim her throne, and the knowledge carved deeper wounds in my already shattered heart.

The girl who would always understand him in ways I never could, whose absence haunted every corner of this place.

Somewhere in the chaos of false affection and suffocating attention, I was losing pieces of myself. Maybe I’d been disappearing long before this moment. Maybe I’d never even discovered who I was beneath the girl who loved Julian.

Desperation drove me to seek out Alpha Quincy, Julian’s father. Unlike his son, Quincy possessed wisdom and fairness that might cut through his heir’s obsession. Perhaps the former Alpha could make Julian see reason.

Maybe he was my only hope.

Finding Quincy proved challenging since his retirement. He followed his own schedule now, preferring solitude to pack politics. I discovered him in his private study, silver hair gleaming in lamplight as he read among towering bookshelves.

"Seraphina," he acknowledged with a slight nod, silver eyes studying my face.

Our relationship had grown complicated since my return. I’d spoken truths he hadn’t wanted to hear, even if they needed saying.

"Alpha Quincy, I need your help." The words tumbled out in a rush. "I can’t continue living like this. Julian is keeping me here against my will. I need to find my father and leave this place."

His eyebrows rose at the mention of my father, genuine surprise flickering across his features unlike his mate’s careful neutrality.

He gestured to a chair. I sat, hands trembling with nervous energy.

"What’s troubling you, Seraphina? I assumed you were content here."

I stared at him in disbelief. How could anyone witness my obvious misery and think I was content?

"Why can’t any of you understand that marriage is my choice to make? I gave Julian an honest chance at reconciliation. It failed. Why must I suffer endlessly for a relationship that takes two people to destroy?"

Quincy sighed heavily. "My son is proud, convinced of his own righteousness. He listens only to my counsel, a dangerous flaw for any Alpha. I believe you’re the key to changing him." He leaned forward. "Julian loves you, Seraphina. Whatever happened between you can be discussed and resolved. That’s no reason to abandon everything."

The betrayal hit like a slap. He was just like the others.

"But it’s not what I want!" My voice cracked with frustration.

"Julian has made his decision," Quincy said firmly. "He’s the pack Alpha now - you missed that ceremony. I won’t undermine his authority. Why not give him another chance, Seraphina?"

Hope crumbled inside my chest. Part of me had been weakening under Julian’s relentless campaign. I craved the attention he showered on me now, the very thing he’d withheld when we were together. Despite the distance between us, he was giving me everything I’d once begged for.

I pretended not to notice, forced myself not to smile at his gestures, but I was softening despite my better judgment. And I hated myself for it, because kindness couldn’t erase betrayal.

How could I forgive him for running straight to her arms? Why did it have to be Roxanne - the woman everyone in my life seemed to choose over me?
