Kira’s POV
As the shadowy tendrils wrapped around the fallen Moonkeeper’s form, a chilling dread coursed through my bones. In contrast to what I observed with Ryker and the wolves with golden eyes, this was different—something much more malevolent. The entity was not merely absorbing him; it was pulling something out, something essential.
The Moonkeeper’s body twisted fiercely as the tendrils penetrated further into his chest, a nauseating squelch resonating in the darkness. His eyes, which once shone with strength, faded into a dull mist, but the being continued onward. Rather, it appeared to be drawing in something invisible—something more than mere flesh and blood.
And then, I noticed it. A subtle silver light surfaced from inside the Moonkeeper, twinkling like a fading star before being entirely engulfed by the being’s shadows. My breath caught. That light—it represented his essence, his strength.
The realization hit me like a knife to the stomach. The being was not only eliminating Moonkeepers. It was sustaining itself on them.
Before I could comprehend the terror of what I had just seen, the image changed. The fight, the peak, the corpses—all of it disappeared into a glaring white emptiness. My stomach twisted as I sensed myself being yanked back, my awareness jolting harshly into reality.
A sudden gasp escaped my lips as my body twisted on the ground of the elders’ residence. My head pounded, my lungs ached, and my sight blurred. I faintly sensed powerful hands holding my arms, balancing me as I wobbled precariously on my feet.
"Kira!" A sound broke through the mist.
Ryker.
His voice carried a sense of concern as his grip on my shoulders became firmer.
I blinked, trying to regain control of my breath, trying to concentrate. All I could witness was the Moonkeeper’s motionless form, his spirit violently torn away, consumed by a primal darkness.
The elders observed me in grave silence, their expressions inscrutable. Emilia lingered close, her face anxious with worry.
"What did you see?" one of the elders finally inquired, voice steady but insistent.
I gulped nervously, my throat parched. "The being..." My voice emerged raspy. "It doesn’t only take the lives of Moonkeepers." It consumes them. "It seizes their essence, their strength, their very spirits."
A whisper spread across the room, yet I wasn’t finished. My hands clenched into fists as I gazed at my shaking fingers. "And it has been doing this for centuries."
The atmosphere in the room became dense with tension. I sensed Ryker’s gaze penetrating me, charged with unasked questions. However, there was an additional feeling—a peculiar tingling on my skin. A subtle warmth that was absent earlier.
I gradually raised my arm, and my breath halted in my throat.
Radiant silver designs coiled around my wrists, subtle but unmistakable. They throbbed with a subtle vitality as if they had eternally belonged to me, poised for the perfect time to disclose themselves.
The elders looked at each other, their faces serious. One of them advanced, tone laden with significance.
"You are transforming, Kira." "The bond is strengthening."
I gazed at my shimmering wrists, my breath catching. The markings throbbed as if they had a heartbeat, aligning with the unpredictable beat of my pulse. A chilling tremor coursed through my body as I attempted to dispel the increasing anxiety inside me.
"You are transforming, Kira." "The bond is strengthening," the elder had remarked.
What link? What was the implication of this?
I raised my eyes, glancing between the elders, looking for responses, but their faces were inscrutable, their looks cautious. Their silence felt heavy, making the fear dig deeper into my heart.
Ryker continued to hold onto me, his hold strong yet tender, his gaze exploring my features. "Kira, what is going on?" His voice was calm and even, yet I could sense the worry underlying it.
I gulped nervously, trying to express my thoughts verbally. "The being... has been feeding on Moonkeepers for hundreds of years." My voice trembled as the image flashed in my thoughts—the Moonkeeper’s body shaking, his spirit being torn apart.
"It’s not merely about ending their lives; it’s about removing something significant from them." "Their strength, their spirits."
Ryker tensed next to me, his jaw clenching. Emilia exhaled unsteadily, her typically calm exterior faltering just a bit.
An uncomfortable awareness started to settle in my thoughts, causing my stomach to churn uncomfortably. If the being was pursuing Moonkeepers to take their strength, what implications did that have for me?
I was the final one of my species.
The final one remains to be pursued.
My chest constricted as an overwhelming dread enveloped me. Am I up next? Could I be the last component in the strange game this being had been engaging in for ages?
The symbols on my wrists throbbed once more, sending an odd warmth through my arms. It wasn’t reassuring—it seemed like a caution, a notification.
The elders looked at each other before one of them began to speak, his tone grave and resonant. The being has been gaining power with every Moonkeeper it devours. If it has been taken in its essence for centuries, then it could already be more powerful than we understand.
I tightened my fists, my nails pressing into my palms as anxiety seemed to overwhelm me. My breathing accelerated, becoming more shallow. My mind swirled.
What if I lacked the strength?
Ryker must have picked up on my increasing anxiety, as he moved nearer, his presence stabilizing me. "We will resolve this," he stated confidently. "You’re not by yourself in this, Kira."
I wished to trust him—I genuinely did. But how was I supposed to? No one else shouldered the burden of what I carried. Nobody else had this entity pursuing them, anticipating the ideal moment to attack.
And the most terrible aspect?
I felt a heavy sense that the moment was approaching rapidly.
The room seemed oppressively dense, and overwhelming. The looks of the elders penetrated me, anticipating my reply, urging me to comprehend what they had just disclosed.
My hands shook as I clenched them into fists, my nails digging into my skin. My body felt as if it were ablaze—not due to pain, but from something more profound, something instinctual.
If the being had been preying on Moonkeepers for centuries, what implications did that hold for me? Was I the ultimate target? Was I the final fragment in whatever perverse cycle it had been perpetuating all along?
Thoughts surged through my mind, with each possibility more ominous than the one before. My visions had been guiding me toward something—readying me. The question was, for what purpose?
I inhaled deeply, making myself calm down. "If it has been pursuing Moonkeepers, why hasn’t it targeted me yet?" My voice was more composed than I felt. "Why is it taking so long?"
An elder, a thin man with piercing, insightful eyes, moved ahead. "Because you are unique, Kira," he said with seriousness. "You are the final one." The entity has become more powerful with every Moonkeeper it has devoured, yet you... you are the pinnacle. "It won’t merely seize your power."
An unpleasant shiver swept through me. "Then what does it want?"
The elder’s mouth tightened into a narrow line. "It wants to turn into you."
The words struck me like a tangible punch. I stumbled back a step, my breath hitching in my throat. "What did you say?"
"The being has seized control from your kind, becoming more powerful with each soul it has consumed." But you... you are the final member of the lineage. It seeks more than just your power, Kira. It desires your spot. If it seizes you, it won’t merely drain your skills—it will transform into the new Moonkeeper."
My stomach churned with tension. A chill sweat formed on my back. This wasn’t solely about my death. This was regarding something far more serious.
"What happens if it wins?" I asked, my voice scarcely louder than a whisper.
Silence.
The elders shared anxious looks until one of them finally said something. "If it is successful, the equilibrium of power will be broken." The Moonkeepers were established to ward off the darkness. "If the entity replaces you, there will be nothing to prevent it."
The sound of ringing echoed in my ears. My thoughts seemed to be coming apart.
I had always understood that my life was not intended to be simple. I was aware that I possessed something significant, something greater than my being. Even though I was a lowly omega at the start, there was this feeling deep inside of me, I knew that there was more. But, this?
This was a sentence of death.
If the entity sought to assume my position, it meant that there was just one method to stop it.
I needed to pass away before it could reach me.
I gulped anxiously, my throat parched. "What should I do?"
Ryker moved nearer, his heat slicing through the chilling fear within me. "We fight," he stated plainly, his tone resolute, steadfast.
I moved my head back and forth. "You’re not understanding, Ryker. If it wants to be me, that means it cannot simply kill me completely. But, if I end my life on my conditions—if I remove myself before it can carry out its plans—"
