Kira’s POV
I scratched frantically at the grip of the golden-eyed wolf as his fingers constricted around my neck. Every second delivered diminishing air, dwindling hope. My sight faded at the borders, shadows advancing like poured ink. I was unable to breathe. Unable to talk. Unable to scream.
*I am unable to die. Not at the moment. Not in this way.*
Images raced through my mind as I fought—Mom’s grin on that final morning before she left me, Asher’s icy gaze when he prioritized power over our connection, Maya’s unwavering loyalty. Liam, who had faith in me when I couldn’t have faith in myself. My group, who relied on me to be tougher than I perceived.
As my awareness dimmed, a feeling awakened deep within me. Not my telekinesis—that ability I had come to depend on seemed insignificant next to what was stirring. This was fundamental. Old. It vibrated within my bones and throbbed with each fading heartbeat, untamed as the moon.
Time elongated as the tension rose inside me. It was not merely power but legacy—as if each Moonkeeper prior to me was transferring their energy into my weakening body.
I am beyond my wolf. Greater than skin that can be shattered. I am the guardian of the moon.*
The blackness in my sight faded, supplanted by a glowing silver light that appeared to emanate from deep within my soul.
A sudden gasp escaped my throat as an unknown warmth flooded through me, awakening something profound inside. As soon as his hold relaxed, I fell to the floor, coughing, my sight fading with flashing silver illumination. But I was no longer weak.
A power I had never experienced surged from deep within me, escalating like a tidal wave, yearning to be unleashed. My hands shook as pure energy surged through my veins, eliminating the fatigue, the hurt, the uncertainty.
My body seemed both weightless and anchored, while my senses heightened more than I had ever experienced.
The war zone fell silent as a silver-blue light burst forth around me, enveloping me in its hold. The formerly lifeless air buzzed with energy, the earth below me trembling in reaction.
I gazed at my hands—energy danced at my fingertips, vibrant, anticipating.
The wolf with golden eyes lost his playful expression, his stare deepening. For the first time, doubt appeared in his expression.
I breathed out slowly, my tone more stable than before. "Did you wish to witness my real strength?"
I raised my hands, sensing the air change around me. "Now allow me to demonstrate what the Moonkeeper can really do."
The tempest within me was at last set free.
The instant I accepted the force flowing within me, everything transformed. My tiredness diminished, supplanted by an intense feeling of clarity and mastery. The wolf with golden eyes lunged, but I perceived every action before it occurred, as if time had come to a standstill.
He lunged at me, claws shining in the faint light, but I evaded with remarkable accuracy. Before he had a chance to regain his balance, I hit—an unseen power collided with his chest, making him slide backward. He snarled, his golden gaze shimmering with rage, yet I was unyielding.
I raised my hand, and the battlefield reacted. Rocks were propelled from the earth, creating a blockade that compelled him into a constricted area. The wind screamed while energy sparked in the atmosphere, reacting to my summons. I tightened my fists, and a wave of energy burst from within me, creating ripples through the earth.
He attempted to strike back, charging at me once more, but I was quicker. With a swift motion of my wrist, I hurled him against a boulder, the force creating deep fissures in the rock. He stumbled, yet his body was already mending.
Not on this occasion.
I concentrated, directing my energy into the air surrounding him, rendering it dense and oppressive. His motions became gradual, his body struggling against the invisible power.
For the initial time, he found himself in a defensive position.
I moved ahead, my voice firm. "You no longer hold all the power alone."
And then, I hit once more.
I couldn’t let him recover once more. His ability to regenerate was his biggest asset, but I was on the verge of removing it.
While he fought against my telekinetic grasp, I concentrated, delving further into my abilities. The atmosphere surrounding him sparkled, imbued with an invisible energy. I tightened my fist, and the energy coiled, encircling his injuries, stopping them from healing. His body convulsed as if something had broken within him.
He released an angry snarl, his golden eyes glowing with fury. "What are you up to?"
At that moment, I sensed it—his regeneration was not merely natural; it was linked to something more profound, something unnatural. A shadowy energy surged inside him, enhancing his healing powers. To halt him, I had to sever that link.
Shutting my eyes, I concentrated on the energy moving within him. I sensed the unnatural energy attempting to heal his injuries, rapidly binding flesh together with unsettling swiftness.
Yet I was the Moonkeeper—I possessed the ability to wield energy itself. With a sudden breath, I extended my hand and broke the link.
He howled in pain as his body convulsed forcefully. His injuries—previously healing in moments—stayed open, bleeding continuously. His breath was uneven, his strength wavering for the first time.
His eyes grew larger in disbelief. "Not possible..."
I moved nearer, my energy pulsating within me. "Your body can’t protect you any longer."
This battle was ultimately my own.
The time had arrived. He felt feeble, his body shaking from the intensity of combat. His golden eyes, which once blazed with pride, now shimmered with a different emotion—fear.
He understood that he was unable to heal. He realized this was the conclusion.
I did not waver. Energy coursed within me, fierce and unrestrained, obeying my command as though it had awaited this opportunity. I raised my hand, the surrounding air shimmering with silver energy.
The earth shook under my feet while I collected every bit of energy I had remaining.
The wolf with golden eyes emitted a frantic growl and surged forward, claws outstretched in a final effort to bring me down. However, he was not fast enough. I easily dodged to the side, lifting my other hand and calling forth a power so intense it warped the air.
With a shout of resistance, I released it. An overwhelming surge of energy burst from my hands, striking him with unyielding power. He yelled as he was raised from the ground, his body contorting erratically before being thrown back.
He slammed into the ground with a dreadful noise, dust and rubble bursting around him.
Quiet.
I approached his motionless figure, my breathing calm despite the burden of the fight. His chest rose and dropped in faint, irregular breaths. He wasn’t gone—yet. I hovered above him, gazing into his fading golden eyes.
"This is the point of conclusion."
With one last burst of strength, I delivered the final blow.
The battleground was hauntingly quiet as the wolf with golden eyes rested still in front of me. His once powerful presence had diminished to merely a shattered shell.
He struggled to breathe in short, labored breaths, his golden eyes flickering as if fighting to maintain grip. Yet he had no remaining will to fight.
I could still sense my energy pulsating, my body vibrating with a force I had never experienced before. It would be incredibly simple to finish him off right now, to guarantee he never returns.
My claws quivered, my fingers formed a fist as I raised my hand, energy sparking at my fingertips. A last strike, and it would be finished.
He coughed, crimson seeping from his mouth as he gazed up at me. His gaze held no defiance any longer—just a strange tranquility. And afterward, he grinned.
"You believe you’ve triumphed?" he wheezed. "You cannot imagine... what lies ahead."
A shiver went down my back. Before I had a chance to respond, his body trembled, a strange, dark force coursing through him. The earth below us fractured forcefully as a wave of energy burst forth from his form, surrounding him in a dazzling glow.
I stumbled backward, covering my eyes. As the light diminished, he disappeared. There was no sign of him left.
I tightened my hands into fists.
This wasn’t finished.
That was just the start.
The battlefield lay quiet, yet my heart raced fiercely within my chest. He had disappeared—lost without a trace, leaving only the remnants of our fight. Yet his last remarks resonated in my thoughts, disturbing and enigmatic.
"You are unaware of what lies ahead."
I pivoted, examining the devastation surrounding me. The battle was not finished. Ryker continued to fight Asher, while the others fought to maintain their position. With the golden-eyed wolf absent, I was left without any means to foresee the greater peril that lay ahead.
A swift blast of wind surged through the atmosphere, bringing an eerie sensation. My intuition shouted at me—something was approaching. Something more dreadful.
From the darkness, a voice—chilling and known—murmured my name.
"Kira..."
I turned around, my eyes wide open.
What I observed sent a chill through my veins.
This fight was nowhere near finished. This was merely the start of something significantly more sinister.
