Chapter 35: Another Raven’s message
Kira’s POV
The atmosphere stayed strained, the burden of my disclosure weighing heavily on us all. I noticed the uncertainty glimmering in Marcus’s eyes, the wary concern in Emilia’s, and the shrewd intensity in Ryker’s. They understood this altered everything—but whether it was for good or bad remained unknown.
Ryker let out a quick breath, brushing his fingers through his hair. "If your ideas are changing, we must determine how to manage them." "We cannot depend on anything uncertain during a conflict."
He was correct. These visions arrived unexpectedly, flooding me at the most inconvenient times. If I could control them, utilize them freely instead of waiting for them to hit, we could foresee Asher’s every action.
"However, how can we accomplish this?" Emilia inquired. "We aren’t even aware of how your skills function."
I stood up straight, resolve strengthening in my heart. "Next, we determine it." I won’t just sit idly by and allow Asher to control this war. "If I can enter his realm and view through the eyes of his warriors, I will turn it against him."
Ryker locked eyes with me, his face showing no clear emotions. At last, he gave a nod. "Now we begin."
Before we could continue our conversation, a deep, primal howl pierced the air, accompanied by growling and snarling sounds. Chills coursed through my veins. The foe had arrived.
Ryker and I shared a glance before we dashed to the battlefield, our fighters already assembling in formation. The evening resonated with the noises of gnashing fangs and talons, the aroma of blood heavy in the atmosphere. Yet something seemed... amiss.
I surveyed the battlefield, looking for the golden-eyed wolves, yet they were absent. These were not Asher’s best fighters. This wasn’t the large-scale assault I envisioned—this was a signal.
"This is not it," I whispered quietly to myself.
Ryker, positioned next to me, narrowly evaded a charging rogue, swiftly slicing through its throat with a quick blow. "What are you trying to say?" he shouted amidst the noise.
I evaded an approaching blow, my actions quick and exact. "There are no wolves with golden eyes present here." Asher has yet to reveal his real powers. "This is merely a test."
Ryker’s teeth gritted as he eliminated another foe. "Next, we ensure that none of them escape alive." "We respond with a message."
And just like that, the actual battle commenced.
The fight swirled around us, yet I maintained my concentration, maneuvering with accuracy through the turmoil. I took down an enemy wolf, my claws slicing through its skin, yet my thoughts stayed focused on the larger scheme—Asher’s real intentions.
This served as a diversion. An investigation. Asher was curious to observe our reactions and to assess our strength. He was assessing us, collecting data for the actual assault.
I noticed one of Asher’s wolves attempting to escape into the woods. My intuition surged—he was returning to inform about what he had witnessed. I couldn’t allow that to occur.
Channeling my Moonkeeper energy, I concentrated on him, immobilizing him in his tracks. His body shook as he struggled against my grip, his golden eyes open wide with terror. I didn’t waver. With a snap of my fingers, his neck contorted at an unnatural angle, and he fell motionlessly to the earth.
Surrounding me, Ryker’s fighters defeated the last of the rogues, one at a time. It wasn’t long before silence enveloped the battlefield, the smell of blood heavy in the chilled air.
We had triumphed in this battle. Yet I felt, deep within my spirit, that this was merely the start. The actual conflict had not arrived yet.
The war zone was hauntingly quiet now, the final remnants of growls and expiring gasps disappearing into the darkness. My heart raced as I took in the sight—Asher’s warriors were sprawled out, their blood seeping into the ground. We had triumphed, yet there was no sense of relief. I realized this wasn’t a win. This was merely the introduction to something significantly more severe.
As I moved ahead, an unexpected noise in the atmosphere caused me to halt. A shadow glided down, resting on my shoulder—a raven. My breathing caught. It held a tiny piece of parchment tightly in its beak.
Ryker moved nearer, his muscles tight. "What is it?"
I gradually extended my hand, grabbing the letter from the bird. As soon as I opened it, my blood ran cold. The penmanship was undeniable. Asher’s.
Kira,
You are observing me, aren’t you?
Great. Observe attentively. This is merely the start.
The words gave me a shiver. He was aware. He was aware of my visions and my developing skills. He wasn’t merely strategizing his assault—he was challenging me to continue observing.
I gripped the letter tightly in my hand, my jaw growing tense. If he believed he could scare me, he was mistaken. This conflict had just turned personal.
My grip on the parchment intensified, my nails pressing into the delicate paper while Asher’s words reverberated in my thoughts. He was aware. He realized I was observing. This implied one frightening possibility—he could be observing me as well.
A gradual, smoldering fury twisted in my chest, dispelling the initial coldness of fear. He wasn’t merely strategizing his assault; he was engaging in a game, provoking me, as if he understood precisely how much his existence occupied my mind.
Ryker moved nearer, his gaze examining the note before returning to me. "He’s trying to provoke you," he stated, his voice quiet and measured. "He desires for you to continue searching, to remain in his thoughts just as he is in yours."
I inhaled deeply, making an effort to calm my heartbeat. He was correct. Asher desired me to follow him into the shadows, to immerse myself in his realm before he made his move. However, I wouldn’t allow him to set the conditions for this conflict.
I locked eyes with Ryker, my determination strengthening. "Then we won’t follow his rules," I remarked. "We alter the rules."
Because if Asher believed I was merely observing, he was mistaken. I was anticipating.
As soon as the battle concluded, I gathered Marcus, Emilia, and the rest, my thoughts racing with what Asher’s letter implied. This was not merely a war declaration—it was a taunt disguised as a warning. He wanted me to realize that he was ahead of the game, that he had dominion over the board. However, he was mistaken.
Positioned in the war room, I spread out a sizable map of our area, my fingers gliding across significant locations. "I said assertively that we can’t wait for him to take the next step." "We must be prepared before he attacks."
Marcus crossed his arms. "If we aren’t aware of when or where he will arrive, how can we get ready?"
I looked into his eyes. "I am aware," I stated. "Not precisely, but my insights are providing us with an edge." We are aware that he possesses wolves with golden eyes, and we recognize that their movements differ from those of ordinary betas. We prepare for them. "We put in more effort than ever before."
Ryker agreed with a nod. "We additionally bolster the borders and enhance the surveillance patrols." "Nothing goes in or out without our awareness."
I tightened my fists. "This time, when Asher arrives, we won’t merely be expecting him." "We will be prepared."
The atmosphere was thick with strain as all listened to my statement. This wasn’t merely another battle; it signified the start of something far more significant. If we were unprepared, Asher would tear us apart as if we were insignificant. I did not allow that to occur. 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦
Emilia moved closer, worry written across her features. "Your insights provide us with an edge, but we cannot depend solely on them." "We require a strategy, data, and discipline."
I gave a nod. "Precisely." That’s the reason we’re altering our training methods. We won’t solely emphasize raw power—we prepare for accuracy, stamina, and flexibility. If those golden-eyed wolves possess the strength of alphas, we must be more intelligent, quicker, and less predictable.
Marcus let out a quick breath. "We have fewer numbers."
"At this moment," I replied. "However, we compensate by being more ready than they anticipate." I looked over at Ryker. "We must locate each vulnerable area in our borders." "If Asher is challenging us, he’s seeking opportunities."
Ryker nodded decisively. "I will increase the patrols threefold."
I positioned my hands on the map, resolve coursing within me. "We do not wait for Asher’s conflict to reach us." "We get ready for it, and when the moment arrives..." I looked into their eyes. "We take the initiative."
While I examined the map, an unexpected chill surged through me. The torches danced, and a haunting quiet enveloped the war room. Suddenly, a loud knock resonated against the door.
A scout burst in, panting.
"Kira... he has arrived."
My heart raced.
"Asher’s forces... they are already advancing."
