- Chapter 1: Victor, the tavernkeeper
Trawerr and Wanda stared at each other for a few seconds after the introductions, not knowing what to say. The silence between them was filled with mutual curiosity and a slight shyness. The gas lamps in the corridor cast soft shadows on their faces, illuminating Wanda’s sparkling eyes and Trawerr’s thoughtful expression.
"You sound just like Aluella described you," Wanda said, her voice soft but full of sincerity. "She always spoke of your determination and abilities, too."
Trawerr laughed nervously and scratched his neck. "And Victor told me what a formidable warrior you are. I think we have much to learn from each other."
Victor and Aluella watched closely, proud smiles forming on their faces. Aluella stepped forward, breaking the initial tension.
"Why don’t we go inside and talk some more? It would be good for you two to get to know each other better."
Wanda moved away from the door and allowed everyone to enter. The room was cozy, decorated with dark wood furniture and warm fabrics. A chandelier hung from the ceiling, casting a warm light over the room. On the far wall was an unlit fireplace with a shaggy rug in front of it. 𝕗𝚛𝚎𝚎𝐰𝗲𝗯𝗻𝚘𝚟𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝕞
Everyone settled into the comfortable couches, and Wanda poured some tea from the table.
"So... Trawerr, how was your day?" she asked, breaking the silence with a casual question.
Trawerr shrugged and smiled, "It was full of surprises, to say the least." He looked at Wanda, still trying to process everything. "It’s not every day you find out your father’s back and that you have a sister, is it?"
Wanda laughed, a sound that seemed to light up the room. "I’d say the same, but I’ve known about you for a few days now. I wish I could have been with you sooner, but I had to go to my guild’s branch to show that I’m present in the city."
The conversation flowed naturally from there, with both sharing anecdotes from their respective travels. Wanda talked about being a member of the Golden Sun Guild and how she was often asked to kill monsters in different parts of the kingdom. Trawerr, for his part, spoke of his missions and the challenges he and his companions had faced in recent months.
As they talked, the initial shyness gave way to a growing camaraderie. Victor and Aluella watched in silence, growing increasingly proud of their sons. Finally, Victor snorted and got their attention.
"I have a suggestion," he said, his tone serious but inviting. "Tomorrow, why don’t you two go hunting together? There are many challenging creatures near the capital. It would be a great opportunity for you to bond and learn from each other."
Wanda looked at Trawerr, her eyes bright with excitement. "I think I’m free tomorrow, because after that it will be difficult because of the Royal Selection. So I’d like that. What do you think, Trawerr?"
Trawerr smiled, feeling a wave of enthusiasm run through his body. "I think it’s a great idea. It would be nice to get some action and see what we’re capable of together."
Aluella nodded, pleased. "Then it’s settled. Let’s get ready for tomorrow. It’ll be an unforgettable experience."
As the evening wore on, the group began to disperse. Aluella and Victor went into the next room, leaving Trawerr and Wanda alone for a moment.
"I’m really looking forward to tomorrow," Trawerr said. "It’ll be nice to spend some time with you and see how we fight together."
Wanda smiled and held out her hand to him again. "Me too. Let’s show them what we’re made of."
Trawerr shook her hand, feeling the strength and confidence in her grip. "See you tomorrow, Wanda."
"See you tomorrow, Trawerr."
With that, Trawerr retired to his room, feeling a mixture of excitement and calm. He knew the next day would be a challenge, but also an opportunity to strengthen his bond with his new sister.
The next morning, after a hearty breakfast where they discussed strategy and shared stories of past adventures, Trawerr and Wanda gathered their weapons and equipment and said goodbye to Aluella and Victor. Leaving the house was accompanied by a brief moment of silence, followed by the sound of leaves crunching under their feet as they walked into the forest.
The path to the cave was surrounded by a dense forest where ancient trees stood like silent giants, their tops forming a green canopy that filtered the sunlight. The air was crisp, with a faint scent of pine and damp earth. As they walked, Trawerr and Wanda swapped stories about their lives, strengthening their newfound bond.
"So, tell me more about the Golden Sun Guild," Trawerr asked curiously. "It must be fascinating to be part of such a prestigious guild."
Wanda smiled, her eyes shining with pride. "It’s an incredible place. Everyone there is dedicated and extremely skilled. We often get called out on dangerous missions, but that’s what makes it so exciting. And of course there’s the camaraderie. Everyone supports each other, which is essential when facing mortal threats.
Trawerr nodded, imagining the battles and challenges Wanda must have faced. "It looks like you found your place there. I hope to see it up close one day."
Before Wanda could answer, they heard voices ahead. Three elderly hunters appeared on the path, carrying bows and daggers. Their worn-out clothes and determined looks indicated that they were veterans in the art of monster hunting. When they saw Trawerr and Wanda, their faces twisted into expressions of surprise and then envy.
"Well, well, well, what have we here?" said the leader of the group, a stocky man with a thick beard. "Trawerr, isn’t it? And that must be another friend... She’s very pretty for a guy like you."
The other hunters laughed, and Trawerr felt his blood boil, but before he could reply, Wanda stepped forward, her posture firm and her gaze defiant. "And you must be the men who don’t know how to respect other people’s space. I suggest you go on your way and leave us alone."
The leader of the hunters approached, ignoring Wanda’s warning. "Oh, come on, don’t be like that. We’re just trying to be friendly. Maybe you’d like to join us and leave that boy behind. We have much more interesting things to show you than him."
Wanda crossed her arms, her gaze cold as ice. "I’m not interested. And I think you should stop being disgusting before something bad happens."
The hunters laughed again, but it was forced, an attempt to hide their growing irritation. "You’ll regret talking to us like that, girl," one of them threatened, his hands going to his weapons.
Trawerr stepped forward, placing himself between Wanda and the hunters. "I believe you heard my sister. Leave us alone."
"Sister?! Hahaha! That makes everything more fun!"
Trawerr felt his blood boil and his muscles tense, ready to defend his sister. The tension in the air was palpable, heavy with the weight of veiled threats and the audacity of the hunters.
"You devils, if you don’t want to die. Get out of here right now. I can’t kill you yet, because we’re too close to the city. But that doesn’t mean I can’t retire them forever."
Wanda stood firm beside him, her gaze fixed on the leader of the hunters, a dangerous glint in her eyes.
The leader stepped forward, completely ignoring Trawerr’s words, and reached for Wanda’s face, as if to grab her chin. But before he could touch her, something extraordinary happened. In one fluid, almost imperceptible movement, Wanda grabbed the man’s arm and with uncanny strength twirled him in the air. The leader of the hunters was thrown like a rag doll, flying into a nearby tree. The impact was brutal, and the trunk shook with the force of the collision as the man fell to the ground, groaning in pain.
The other hunters stood motionless for a moment, stunned by Wanda’s display of strength.
Trawerr used the moment of surprise to draw his sword, preparing for an attack. But Wanda, with a determined look on her face, was already moving again, approaching the other two hunters.
"I warned you," she said, her voice calm but full of authority. "Now you will learn respect."
One of the hunters tried to draw a dagger, but Wanda was quicker. She stepped forward and disarmed him with a precise blow, then kicked the dagger away. The hunter, now disarmed, stepped back, tripping over his own legs. The third hunter, still trying to process what had happened, began to back away slowly, his trembling hand holding a bow that he clearly didn’t know how to use against Wanda.
Trawerr, still holding his sword, approached Wanda, his eyes full of admiration and a little fear. He had always known she was strong, but he had never seen her in such a direct and impressive way.
"Wanda," he said, his voice a reverent whisper, "you... you are incredible."
She looked up at him, a small smile on her face. "We’re just getting started, Trawerr. We have a long way to go."
