Aron Simple was badly injured, with cuts, bruises, and internal and external bleeding all over his body.

Victor could heal himself with Den, but it was very difficult to heal other people with this technique, and it would take hours. That was the time Victor definitely didn’t have. Therefore, Aron’s only chance to be saved was to take him to Selvarum Manor, where Luísa would surely be able to heal him with her magical abilities.

Victor carefully picked Aron up and held him with both arms. Aron was thin and of medium height, so it wouldn’t be a problem to carry him. But by the time Victor left the tailor’s shop carrying his friend, night had fallen, cold and still as every winter’s night had.

Victor covered Aron with his cloak and kept a steady jogging pace, avoiding any sudden movements that might aggravate Aron’s injuries.

Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, Victor saw the gleaming windows of Selvarum Mansion.

The mansion was imposing and majestic, with some of its outer stone walls covered in ivy, not to mention the large arched windows that glowed with light from inside.

When Victor knocked on the mansion’s large door, Frugeon, the mansion’s guardian, greeted him. Frugeon looked at Victor and Aron with concern.

"Victor, what happened? Who is this man?"

"He’s Aron, a friend of mine," Victor replied, slightly out of breath. "He is seriously injured. I must take him to Luísa. She can heal him with her magic."

Frugeon didn’t hesitate and led the way, letting Victor pass.

"Follow me," he said after closing the door and leading Victor through the corridors to Luísa’s office.

As they entered Luísa’s office, she was behind her desk and immediately realized the seriousness of the situation. She snapped her fingers and made all the papers on her desk disappear, creating a safe surface.

"Put it here." She ordered, and Victor promptly walked over and placed Aron on the table. "What happened?" Luísa asked, her voice full of concern as she examined Aron’s injuries with her eyes.

"He was attacked. The details don’t matter now. We have to heal him before it’s too late."

Luísa nodded, held out both hands, and began to recite a spell:

"With the embrace of light, heal wounds anew. With gentle grace, restore and renew. With a holy touch, let the pain subside. Blessed healing in you we trust. From the depths of purest light, mend the broken, make all right. With each word, a soothing balm..."

As she spoke, an intense greenish light emanated from her hands, enveloping Aron’s entire bruised body and healing some of his superficial wounds, such as cuts and bruises.

Luísa continued singing for minutes, and the deeper cuts began to close.

Victor watched with a mixture of hope and fear. With each passing second, he felt the weight of guilt grow on his shoulders.

It was Victor who had expelled the twins Wendell and Walrick on the first day, and he had promised him that he would visit him often to make sure everything was going well. But weeks went by without him fulfilling that simple promise.

Victor looked away to the window, where the frosty night seemed to reflect his inner state.

"Victor," Luísa called in a softer tone. "He’s stabilized. The most serious wounds have been treated, but I still can’t guarantee that he is completely out of danger. Aron needs to stay here so that I can monitor him and act quickly if necessary. He hasn’t woken up yet and we have to make sure that there is no more serious internal damage."

The internal damage she was talking about wasn’t bleeding from internal organs, but neurological damage that could happen to people who had been beaten as badly as Aron had been.

"Thank you, Luísa," he murmured, unable to find the right words to express his gratitude.

Luísa came over and hugged him, putting one of her arms around his shoulders. "Victor, you did everything you could. You brought him here, and now he has a chance, thanks to you."

He remained serious, almost exhaling the anger that was beginning to grow inside him. "I should have been there for him. I promised I’d visit him regularly, but I stayed away for weeks."

"You waited for things to calm down because of the news in the paper. I couldn’t have predicted that something like this would happen."

Victor looked up at her, finding comfort in the honesty of her eyes. "No, I could have. That’s why I feel responsible."

Luísa sighed and removed her hand from his shoulder. "The important thing is that you were there when he needed you most, and you were largely responsible for saving his life."

Luísa knew Victor, and even though he always kept a serious face, she could see the flame of anger in his eyes that night.

"Who did this to him? Was it a planned attack or a random one?"

Victor hesitated for a moment, remembering the twins and the black sword. "It was two men, Walrick and Wendell," he replied.

Luísa frowned, trying to remember who they were and failing. "Do you know them?"

"Sort of. Aron told me the other day that he borrowed money from Garret Darksoul and that these men were Garret’s debt collectors." Victor explained, turning to the unconscious Aron.

"That was probably the reason for the attack... Of all the loan sharks and pirates, why Darksoul, the worst of the worst?"

"I should have considered that they would return after I had chased them away." Victor clenched his fists in anger.

With the clear signals Victor gave, it was almost as if Luísa could read his mind. "You’re not thinking of going after him, are you? Victor, Garret Darksoul is no longer the swashbuckling criminal you faced decades ago. He’s a politician with a criminal organization even bigger than my trading company!"

"And what do you think I should do? Just stand here?" Victor asked, and silence fell over the room. "I know that if I leave, I probably won’t be able to stay in your mansion anymore because it would lead to a lot of trouble for you, but I can’t let this go. Besides, those twins have stolen something important from me!"
