The water whizzed by as the boat began its voyage. Where were they going? No one knew.
To them, Kain picked a random direction and went.
Kain knew exactly where he was going. He was going to the place where he had seen and killed the upper-level mutant beast.
He had felt a breakthrough coming for some time now, but he needed a catalyst. He wasn’t sure whether he would find another one, but it was a risk he was willing to take.
Standing at the helm, Kain and Dominic stood driving the boat. Kain placed a box in front of him so Dominic could stand on it to help him steer. Though Dominic couldn’t do it on his own now, it didn’t stop the father-son bonding activity.
The entire journey was three hours.
During those three hours, each child was able to try driving the boat.
Kain looked back at Amelia, an eyebrow raised. He tilted his head.
"There are still a few minutes. Would you like to...?"
She kicked the box aside and walked into his arms. The expression in her eyes said, ’it’s about time.’
She asked him, "Where are we going? And don’t tell me you’re just taking a look around." She said the last part before he could refute.
Sheepishly, Kain laughed. "You know me so well." He rested his chin on the top of her head. "I’m going to the place I last saw the upper-level mutant beast."
"Why?"
"I need a challenge. I’ve been meditating, and I can feel a breakthrough. I just need to push myself a bit more." He kissed the top of her head.
She nodded, letting out a low sound.
Soon the boat came to a stop.
Kain addressed everyone, making them aware of his purpose.
"In this place, I hope everyone can keep an eye out. I’m not entirely sure if we will meet any specific creature. The bone weapons I created before were from a creature I found here. If we do find another, it will be stronger, faster, and more aggressive. A moment of carelessness is the difference between life and death.
It may not seem like it now, but should we find anything here, it will be of great benefit to your future."
His gaze fell on the seven people who came with them, one woman and six men.
"You’ve made the right choice coming here, but also a deadly one. If you have no intention of becoming stronger or continuing to be a part of the Nightfall Faction, you may tell me now.
I do not appreciate indecisive people."
Their reason for being here was none of his concern. He wasn’t in the mood to look for burdens. He needed allies.
Right now, what he needed most was a breakthrough.
Ever since that voice reared its head, a feeling had been nagging at the back of his mind. He hadn’t noticed previously, but he was definitely missing something.
Not to mention, he thought about what it said before. He couldn’t remember how he died. He knew he had died. He remembered him and Amelia in that building. The next thing he remembered was being a spirit and following the children.
Any idea of what happened between that time felt like it had been scrubbed clean. But now wasn’t the time for him to think about any of this.
That voice keeps saying they are the same person, but he felt like it was holding back.
Bringing himself from his reverie, he looked at the seven people. Their motives are unclear, so Kain had no intention of teaching them to use Source Energy.
Turning away, he faced his team.
He clapped Jon on the shoulder. "So, old man, how are you feeling?" At the same time, he gave a sidelong glance to Verdana.
"Mr Nightfall," Jon choked out, having been slapped too hard. "This is something I never imagined. It is my greatest fortune to be a part of your team. I also understand your reaction to my previous hypothesis about atmospheric changes."
Kain chuckled, nodding slowly. "Make the most of your time. The waters won’t be leaving any time soon."
Ignoring the look Jon gave him when he said this, Kain walked away.
For the next three hours, they waited. The children jumped around until they were tired and fell asleep. The adults either meditated or had quiet conversations.
Some time within those three hours, Kain decided that everyone should eat.
A simple meal was prepared.
Another two hours passed after that, still no luck.
Kain decided it was time to change their location. He also decided that since this place was so calm, if they made it back, it would be a good place to spend the night.
He turned back, heading towards the direction of the Sanctuary. Two hours in, he turned, veering off course.
He wasn’t intending to back in the first place.
Since they couldn’t get the upper-level beast, he would try for something else.
Another two hours, and they found another place to stay.
The surroundings were quiet. The team once again relaxed, and for thirty minutes all was right with the world.
Then Kain felt the prickle on the back of his neck. It didn’t feel dangerous exactly. It was the sort of feeling someone would get when they are anticipating a blow.
A sixth sense.
Kain surveyed the area. He scanned every inch of the water, looking for the reason he was suddenly on edge. But no matter how much he searched, he couldn’t find anything.
"Something’s wrong," he said.
That sentence put the others on high alert. Their bodies tense, ready for whatever might pop out, but the more they waited, the more anxious they became.
There was no threat as far as the eye could see, but the area was too quiet.
A quiet they hadn’t previously noticed.
Slowly, Kain backed towards the helm. If whatever this is could make him feel like this, then it might not be safe to have any of them here.
Not to mention the fact that they had been here for more than half an hour, and only now did he feel the tension.
Scanning the area, he still couldn’t find anything.
He turned on the engine and gunned it. No matter what it was, he couldn’t risk their lives.
Fifteen minutes passed, and the feeling was still there.
It was a predator. Waiting for them to make the wrong move, for them to swoop into whatever trap it had planted.
Yet Kain continues to drive.
He couldn’t understand why this thing was letting them go.
It was definitely letting them go. Because, even after half an hour, Kain found he could still feel the eyes of whatever it was on him.
He swallowed. He hadn’t expected that some creatures had already surpassed the Mutant stage.
If he had to guess, he could only assume it was a Deviant.
