He quickly asked the system about the nurturing station.
[Nuturing station available. Does the host agree to receive? Y/N]
The moment Kain chose yes, he felt his lower abdomen tremble. A heat spread across it, threatening to burn him from the inside out. He groaned as the pain hit him.
Gritting his teeth, he gripped the bed.
Amelia saw him in pain. She called out to him, holding his arm, but Kain heard nothing. He was focused on the intense pain in his lower abdomen. It was no longer heat, but a tearing sensation.
Sweat washed his face. He closed his eyes, trembling all over.
After no more than a minute, the pain began to subside. Huffing, he leaned back onto the headboard. The cool touch at the back of his neck made him shiver.
Opening his eyes, he came face to face with Amelia; the worry in her eyes was palpable. He raised a hand and stroked her cheek. His eyes were half-lidded.
"Are you okay?" she asked, grabbing his wrist.
He hummed, nodding lightly.
"Go to sleep," he rasped. "I’m okay. I’ll just go take a shower."
While Kain was in pain and Amelia tried to soothe him, neither of them noticed their door had been quietly opened. Three pairs of eyes were peeking in. Dominic, who had the power to see values, saw the value on Kain’s head flickering.
This was what stopped them from entering the room and only peering inside. When Kain overcame his pain, the dazzling 10 above his head turned to a red 15.
The three children closed the door soundlessly. Kain and Amelia were none the wiser.
As the pain subsided, Kain got up. The darkness in the room covered up the fact that his skin was now pale. He walked steadily and briskly to the bathroom. He closed the system interface.
Closing the bathroom door, he went to the sink and splashed some water on his face. He gripped the sink; his ragged breathing echoed. The burning feeling in his body was gone, but now he had a new problem.
He looked at himself in the mirror. His violet eyes had become blood red. He stared at them. They shone like rubies. He calmed his breathing even more, attempting to get himself to breathe evenly.
The eyes weren’t the problem. The problem is, when he was going through the pain, he saw something. He couldn’t be sure what it was. He only knew it was powerful. It felt like he would be ripped apart if he looked whatever it was in the eye.
The more he stood there, the more he forgot. He had remembered more when he still sat on the bed. Looking in the mirror now, he could only remember that he wasn’t supposed to look.
The only thing that hadn’t been scrubbed from his brain at this point was his eyes. And now, they had already turned back to their usual violet colour.
Pulling himself together, he took another shower. Amelia hadn’t slept when he came out. He had hoped. But, no. Now he could only distract her with the nurturing station.
He wrapped her up in his arms.
"I’m fine. Stop worrying."
"You know I’m worried, but you took so long. What were you doing in there?"
Kain’s eyes landed on the shirt she was wearing. It had ridden up, and her plump bottom was on display. He reached out, giving it a slap.
"Someone was showing me the goods. I was trying to be a gentleman."
She rolled her eyes and swatted his hand. "You know that’s not what happened. Seriously, tell me."
Not wanting to worry her, he diverted the topic. "Don’t you want to see what the nurturing station is?"
He didn’t wait for a response. He grinned, held her close, and the two of them disappeared.
The next second, they were sitting in a small bedroom, in what appeared to be a log cabin.
As the owner, although he hadn’t seen it before, Kain did not feel out of place. He allowed Amelia to look around. There wasn’t just one bedroom. There were four. Though smaller than his own, being 100 square feet, they served the purpose of bedrooms.
As with any other house, it had a kitchen, bathrooms, and so on. What made it unique was the place attached to each child’s bedroom. Aside from the bathroom and closet, there was another door. This door served as their private area.
For Dominic, it carried what looked like an office. He had the option to see outside the space. In Ashton’s room, there was a small, fully functional lab. In Avery’s room, there was a combat room. The floors were padded to stop her from getting hurt.
Each room catered to the child’s interests.
The two walked around marvelling at the miracle. Amelia wanted to stay for the night. She wanted to go outside and explore. She saw the vibrant green outside.
She pouted when Kain told her they couldn’t go outside yet. She sulked even more when he told her they could only stay for an hour.
"It’s a place for the kids. If we ever find ourselves in danger, we just need to pull them in, and they’ll be safe. They can stay for one day. For now, we can only stay for an hour."
He took her hand and pulled them out. Once again, they were on the bed. Kain explained that it could be upgraded. As for the conditions, he was unsure. He only knew that it had something to do with the children.
"Don’t think about it, we have the time to figure things out. But we only have two weeks before the world ends."
He pulled the duvet over her and told her to sleep.
Behind her, he couldn’t sleep. There was one thing he hadn’t shown her. There was a storage space in the basement of the cabin. He could use it to store everything he had bought.
It solved his problem immensely. He would convince Amelia to take him to the warehouse where the Hartwells had begun to store their equipment. He was worried that when the world expanded, he would never be able to find them.
He explained this to the Hartwells, but they weren’t in the least bit concerned.
The planet expanding is scientifically impossible.
Impossible or not, he knew it would happen. Since they don’t mind losing the equipment, he doesn’t mind taking it. After everything, if they can find them, then he might be willing to give a few things back.
He closed his eyes, thinking about what he needed to accomplish in the next two weeks. With the nurturing station, he had no reason to suffer.
