Finally, under their persuasion, the four people decided to have lunch together.
Kain and his people didn’t have lunch with them. The Hartwell’s had their ’sumptuous’ meal. It was mainly self-heating meals, but the variety was plentiful. They ate and laughed with each other like old friends. 𝕗𝗿𝕖𝐞𝐰𝗲𝕓𝐧𝕠𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝐨𝚖
For Kain and his people, the food wasn’t so special. It was mainly ramen and luncheon meat.
This ’rich’ display told the four people that this place definitely had food.
While enjoying himself, Tony glanced out of one of the windows. He saw everyone milling around. Every now and again, a person would walk to another section of the house. The movements were casual. Like taking a short walk after having eaten too much or stretching their muscles.
The Hartwell’s didn’t pay attention to it, but Kain did. Level one may seem like nothing, but in a world of ordinary people, it is extraordinary. His body has already changed, and he can hear the footsteps of the people walking around the house.
It wasn’t skilful, so he knew they had either not done it before or they weren’t skilled enough. He didn’t stop them. Whether it was his people or the Hartwells, they needed to learn to guard themselves.
Coddling leads to disaster. Having them learn the hard way will be a lasting lesson.
"Do you mind if I use the bathroom?" Jay asked. " I can go outside if it’s not convenient."
"Silly girl, it’s fine. Don’t be like these rough men. It’s up the stairs, second door on your left."
She mumbled a thank you and ran up the stairs.
Kain continued to watch the show and said nothing.
"Can we go outside?" Ashton asked.
Kain nodded. "Go ahead, stay close to the house."
Amelia touched his arm as she watched the children run outside. He patted her arms, reassuring her. He smiled. She is becoming more like a worried mother. He would never say this to her, of course.
Lunch was done, and Kain continued to lounge. The Hartwell’s were still entertaining the three people. Not noticing that Jay had been done for more than ten minutes.
A window on the second floor opened. Quiet footsteps creaked as people walked around. He waited another ten minutes before he got up. That should give them enough time to get some food.
He sat up abruptly, "Did you hear something?" He turned towards the staircase.
Ray was the first to answer. "Didn’t hear anything. And trust me, my hearing is..." He clicked his tongue, snapped, and gave a thumbs-up.
Kain didn’t back down, "No, I’m sure I hear something." He furrowed his brow. "Where’s your friend? She’s been gone for a while. Do you think she’s okay?"
His face didn’t look concerned as he said it. A smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. His eyebrows raised mockingly at the Hartwells.
Nicola was the first to catch the hint. He bolted up the stairs, not waiting for anyone else. Kain whistled, watching him sprint up the stairs. The other followed behind him. They were so quick to run that they hadn’t noticed that the three people didn’t follow.
While the homeowner ran upstairs, the thieves left through the door.
"Go," Kain said.
Jake’s eager ’watch the fun’ face made Kain shake his head.
The living area was empty except for Amelia and Kain. "You knew, didn’t you?" she asked.
"Know what?" he asked quizically. "I heard a sound upstairs. I didn’t tell everyone to run up there."
She clicked her tongue and went upstairs with the others.
Kain plopped down on the sofa, arms behind his head, staring at the ceiling. The children came running in, giggling and smiling. Kain understood this kind of giggle. They did something. Knowing would only cause trouble, so he didn’t ask.
"Have fun outside?"
"Yup," Avery replied, emphasizing the p.
Kain looked at her suspiciously. Ultimately, he refrained from asking.
Only when he saw everyone running downstairs and the sound of the boats did he get up and trail behind them to the door.
He was a bit disappointed. He had expected a fight. Since they ran, it means they got a large portion of the food, or at least enough to feed themselves for a while.
As soon as he stepped out, he witnessed the demure Mrs Hartwell, yelling her head off.
"Bring back our food. You sons of bitches, come back here."
Different from her elegant demeanor and soft voice, it was the first time Kain had seen such a Mrs Hartwell. He threw a teasing glance the butler’s way. As if sensing his gaze, Arthur, the butler, looked over.
He wiggled his eyebrows, looking between Arthur and Mrs Hartwell, trying to convey, ’does she get this feisty in bed?’ Whether he understood or not, Arthur gave Kain no inkling.
Mrs Hartwell finished cursing the boat people and swiveled to curse Kain.
"You knew all along, didn’t you?"
Damn, perceptive. Just like her daughter.
"You...you fucker, you piece of shit masquerading as a gentleman. You let them take off with our food."
He listened as she cursed him. The curses going in one ear and out the other. His mind began to wander. He thought that for a woman in her late fifties, Mrs Hartwell maintained herself well.
If he didn’t know she was Amelia’s mother, he would think she was only a few years older than him. His eyes fell on her heaving breasts. He does like a nice pair of tits.
Mother and daughter? His body shivered. Amelia would probably skin him alive. But then, what she doesn’t know won’t hurt. As long as her mom keeps her mouth shut, then it’s fair game.
When she finally finished chewing him out, Kain came back to his senses. He felt Amelia’s eyes on him. The thought of fucking her mother dissipated when he saw the way she looked at him. He felt she was trying to stare into his soul.
"It doesn’t matter if I knew." Kain retorted. "You are the ones who invited them inside. Weren’t you having a good chat? That’s the cost of a good chat."
He didn’t get the fight he was looking for, so he walked back into the house.
Before he had gotten too far, he heard Avery call out to him, "Dad, look!"
He hadn’t gotten over her calling him dad when she ran up to him and pointed at the boats, which had already gone a distance away.
