Flexing his stiff hands, Kain shut off the engine. They had nowhere to anchor, but he needed to make sure everyone was alright. The children and Amelia, especially. They had been in the cabin the entire time and had no idea what was going on outside.
He took a quick look at the three on deck. After confirming they were fine, he ran to the cabin.
Stepping down, he was surprised to see water seeping in. HE remembered the scraping sound from earlier.
He looked around, searching for the emergency kit. He found it and quickly grabbed the sealant to patch the jagged crack. It took him nearly twenty minutes to fix it.
The cabin smelled awful, but Amelia and the children were safe. He saw Claire standing in a corner like a guard. He briefly acknowledged her before checking on the children.
They were all awake. Amelia clutched them in her arms. They watched him, eyes filled with curiosity. He chuckled to himself.
’These kids really don’t know fear.’ Regardless, he let out a breath when he saw they were afraid.
"Are you alright?" he moved to touch them when he noticed the sealant on his hands. There were also a few cuts from where the edges of the crack scratched him. He pulled them back and stared at the four of them.
Amelia nodded, looking down at the children. Avery hugged her clothes, looking up at Kain. Ashton looked at Kain, then at his hands. Dominic stepped into the water before anyone could stop him.
He collected the first aid kit and handed it to Kain.
"I’m fine."
Dominic didn’t move. He held the kit until Kain took it from him and watched as Kain cleaned his hands.
"Alright," he showed his hands to the three children. The small cuts on his hand had been disinfected. "Is this alright now?"
Kain picked Dominic up. He cleaned the dirty water from his body and placed him on the bed.
"You should go to sleep. I’ll take care of everything." He saw that Amelia was about to refuse. He put a finger on her lip and said, "You take care of the kids, I take care of everything else."
Only then did she relent.
Heading to the deck, he brought up a bucket with him. He threw the bucket to Jaylin.
"There’s water in the cabin, bail it out."
He didn’t give her a chance to refuse. He saw that the fuel gauge was practically empty. He bent down, pretending to get petrol. Then he called out to Matthew, telling him to fill up the tank.
Once it was filled, they set off again.
Thanks to the minimal sleep Kain received, he was able to hold out for a while. He set the others to clean things up in the cabin and on the deck. 𝐟𝗿𝐞𝚎𝚠𝐞𝚋𝕟𝐨𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝕔𝕠𝚖
So far, their first day on the yacht turned into a bad dream. He could only hold out hope that it would get better.
’Optimistic bastard,’ he thought.
Maybe optimism did work, because about an hour or so into the drive, Kain stumbled upon a group of buildings. They were leaning, but it was enough for him.
He didn’t need the shelter. What he needed was a place to anchor.
He found a nearby place to anchor the yacht and get some sleep. He was nowhere near Superman capable, and even he needed to sleep, so he took the chance to shut his eyes.
He gave the order for the others to sleep too, otherwise none of them could function in the morning.
The rain, that’s what Kain felt. The pattering of water on his face. It made him curse. He came out of one water torrent to end up in another.
The skies were grey, which would explain why the sun didn’t scald him. From the look of it, he slept for quite a few hours.
He went below deck. The others might not be awake, but he was sure the children were. He couldn’t leave them hungry because he was tired.
As he moved, he smelled the stink of the water on him. He was probably the only one still coated in the dirt of the past few hours.
The convenience of being able to bathe is great, but he was used to being dirty, too. He might not like it, but he wasn’t repulsed by it.
He left the children with food, made sure there was food for the others, and went back on the deck. They needed to get moving. Even as they moved forward, the planet was expanding.
Lucky for Kain, he could take cover, and the rain wasn’t heavy. He took something from the space to eat while he traveled.
Slowly, the others woke up.
"Good to see everyone up. Now it’s my turn to rest. Veronica, you’re up." He patted Jake’s shoulder, letting him know he needed to teach her how to navigate the yacht. "Remember, keep the course."
With his hands finally free, he strolled towards the cabin, ready to relax.
He wasn’t sure how much time had passed, but he was woken up by the sound of shouting.
"For fuck’s sake," he mumbled, annoyed.
Wiping a hand across his face, he stretched. The shouting was getting louder, and he was getting annoyed. He took a gun from the storage, concealed it, and walked out.
Stepping on the deck, he saw the problem. He kept out of sight so he could see the complete picture.
There was a group of people who were preventing them from moving forward. The buildings they lived in were close enough for them to form a blockade.
They were innovative, he’ll give them that. They took the time to make an interconnected metal sheeting. They could pull it apart when necessary.
The volume of their voices suggested they didn’t need food. So Kain could only assume they wanted someone to rescue them. Too bad they chose the wrong people.
Kain had no interest in being a saviour.
