Night flowed smoothly, darkness softened into a pale grey, and the stars dimmed and vanished. Slowly, streaks of golden light pierced through the awakening sky. Golden rays of sun filtered in through the cracks in the curtain.
Today was the day. Nightfall would join the Horizon Barge on a voyage. As for what they would discover or what would happen on that voyage, no one knew. And that made it all the more fun.
For everyone, today should be a good day.
Kain, Amelia, Dominic, Ashton, and Avery were having breakfast. It would be their last breakfast in this apartment...for now.
"Are we really leaving?" Avery asked, her feet swinging.
"Why, you don’t want to?" Amelia asked.
Avery nodded. "I’m going to miss my room."
"You don’t need to miss it. You’ll see it again soon," Kain replied.
Three little heads popped up from their food.
Kain laughed. "When we leave, I’ll put this place into the secret space. By then, you’ll have two rooms to choose from. You can change from one to the other whenever you want."
"That’s great. Sleeping in the room near the lab makes me feel like I’m at work." Ashton sighed dramatically.
"Work? What do you know about working?" Kain asked.
"Dad. I’m young, not stupid. I work in the lab. After I’m done, I’m always tired. Didn’t we watch the movie where the dad was always working? That’s how I feel."
Amelia laughed. Kain looked at him in disbelief.
"Alright, Dad is wrong. Our Ash is working too much, so he needs a separate play bedroom. But you know, you don’t always have to work, right?"
"I know. But I like the lab. I even found a way to get toxins from the mosquitoes. I’ll give you and Mom some." He sighed. "I lost a hamster, though. I gave it too much, and it died."
Kain wasn’t sure what to say to this. He had the child ’working’ with such dangerous things. But stopping him would just make the child depressed.
When he had more time, he would go in and take a look. After the last guinea pig experiment, he never went in again.
"After we leave, how about Dad helps you in the lab? That way, our Ash will be less tired."
Ashton nodded decisively. Amelia glanced at him before looking away and taking a bite of her food to hide her smile.
Breakfast ended quickly. The family of five went downstairs. Unexpectedly, their arrival on Floor Two was what it took to quell the chaos.
Of course, Kain and Amelia had expected chaos. After all, Julian and Gertie were sent to create chaos. They figured out as much based on what the children found out the previous night and their own observations.
What they hadn’t expected was that the chaos didn’t come from them but rather the ’normies’.
"Are we having a party?" Kain asked, looking at the canned food strewn on the floor
Everyone watched his gaze. Their eyes fell on the items on the floor. No one spoke.
"Well, are you all planning to stare at the floor all day? Explain," Kain said.
Everyone began talking all at once. Kain lifted a hand, stopping the chatter. He pointed to Marcus and Dillon.
"You two, explain. One at a time." Then he pointed to Marcus. 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖
Marcus made a gesture to the seven standing off to the side. "They refuse to leave. A few of us were helping Jake move the inventory. They saw the amount and decided we were taking too much.
Only after we exchanged a few words did we know they intended to stay and wanted to ensure they had some food to tide themselves over when we left. As for what’s on the ground, blame them for tossing the bag."
Marcus’ rendition was concise. It didn’t include any unnecessary words, just the facts.
Seeing Marcus had finished speaking, Kain turned to Dillon.
Dillon took a deep breath before speaking. "We’ve been trying to understand the reason we need to leave. This place is fine. It can keep us safe. It’s obvious that the place isn’t ordinary, but you insist on leaving and won’t tell us why.
Not to mention, there is obviously a lot of food. There is no reason for us to share our things with others. I’ve talked to the others, and we decided last night that it would be better to stay.
If you all still insist on leaving, we want to take what we deserve. Everything should be divided into three parts. The barge can get whatever they want, so can you guys, but we want a share too.
If everyone stays, nothing will happen. There’s no reason to fight, and we can still live well. Going outside...who knows what kind of danger is out there? It’s better to stay here and be surrounded by walls than be out in the open."
After his long-winded speech, Kain nodded. "Understandable. Since none of you want to leave, I won’t force you. You may keep a share of food for yourselves as well."
Jaws dropped. None of them expected Kain to give in so easily.
Marcus narrowed his eyes. He stared at Kain. His agreeing so readily made no sense. He didn’t consider Kain an easy-going person. He thought about it, and as he did, a thought struck him.
Kain brought them out of the building last time so they wouldn’t die when it changed. Who was to say the same wouldn’t happen this time? What if it changed again? Aren’t they signing their own death warrants?
He saw Kain’s eyes gleam. Had he not been looking directly at him, he wouldn’t have caught it.
It solidified his thought that Kain was definitely up to something. He kept quiet. He felt there was no need for him to say anything.
While everyone except Marcus was still in a state of shock, Kain turned to the couple. They had been standing a distance away from everyone.
"How about the two of you?" he asked. "Are you planning to stay with them or go with us? There’s still time to decide."
