While Jon and the others were figuring out how to grow vegetables, Jaylin and her crew were on the hunt. It was another normal run. Ever since the first time they had gone out with Kain, he had not accompanied them. 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺
He put Jaylin in charge of their team of nine and introduced them to Source Energy. According to Dominic, he has been taking note of the changes in the number of people who use Source Energy versus those who don’t. He found that besides Matthew, whose number seemed to be declining, the others changed in colour.
The colour of the number had become deeper. Only when he got to level 3 was he able to see this change.
It is because Kain’s precious son wanted to understand what he was seeing better than Kain was willing to teach them to use Source Energy. The upside for them is that they would easily capture prey.
And on this day, they met a delicious-looking tuna.
They knew they had no chance to eat the fish itself, but they had the hope of eating the bone marrow.
Kain had let them in on that little ’secret’ to get them to keep hunting. Since they had become Awakeners and lived on Floor Three, it was only right to give them some privileges besides their usual daily food.
And Jaylin, who had tasted bone marrow before, was the most enthusiastic.
Paige’s arms wrapped around Jaylin. She leaned into her chest, feeling the heavy bosom surrounding her like pillows.
Smacking her lips as she recalled the taste, she said, "You don’t understand. No matter what kind of delicacies you’ve had in your life, it doesn’t compare to marrow. The rest of the fish might be inedible, but marrow..." She closed her eyes and moaned.
"Alright," Ian said, face miserable. "We get it. It’s the most delicious thing on the planet. I’m hungry enough as it is. Don’t make it worse." He rubbed his stomach.
"Tsk, who told you not to eat anything?" Jayling scowled.
"Wasn’t I keeping it empty for the marrow?" He looked around at the calm waters. "Now I don’t even know if I’ll ever get to taste it."
The group laughed heartily. Although Ian was complaining, they were all still grateful for the opportunity to even try it.
When they learned about Source Energy, they thought it was something out of a novel. They never thought, in a million years, that the world would become a fantasy. First, the apocalypse that caused them to despair, then the Source energy that caused them to rejoice.
The saying is really true, ’When one door closes, another one opens.’
They continued their conversation without a care for whether they would scare the fish away.
These mutant fish were more likely to approach when they heard the commotion. For some reason, once they begin to mutate, they go after any food source, but humans appear to be their targets.
It might be years of actively catching their relatives and friends and using them to make tasty dishes. They couldn’t take it anymore and decided they would be the tasty dish now.
Suddenly, Jaylin raised a hand, "Did you hear that?"
She stood quickly, listening for the sound. The other quieted, listening for any sounds.
It was silent for a moment before a scream came from a distance away.
Though they weren’t in the habit of saving people, it didn’t mean they wouldn’t. It depended on whether they were worth saving.
Travelling towards the sound, the screams become louder.
At the beginning, the person sounded afraid, but as they got closer, they realized they weren’t scared. It was excitement.
They came upon a group of people who were attempting to maul a giant fish. They stared at it like rabid animals. They had makeshift weapons that they used to attack the fish.
In their eyes, they were wrangling their dinner. To Jaylin and the others, they were being toyed with.
"Tuna," Ian said dreamily. He licked his lips and stared lovingly at the large tuna that was dancing around.
"Give him some bread," Jaylin said, "We don’t need him biting the tuna and getting himself killed.
Ian took the bread and stared at the tuna. As he chewed, he spoke, "You don’t get it. That’s tuna. I heard that tuna bone marrow is expensive. Like really expensive. I don’t really like fish, so I didn’t think about it.
But who wouldn’t want to eat a delicacy? And if it tastes good to rich people before it mutated, imagine how good it would taste now?"
Hearing what Ian said, their thoughts became active.
"But will they let it go?" Vincent asked. "Judging from the crazed look in their eyes, I don’t think they’ve eaten in forever."
"We can tempt them with food," came Paige’s soft voice. "Tell them the tuna can’t be eaten."
"But would they believe us?"
"Forget about them believing. That tune is about to slap them to heaven," Jaylin sighed.
"Then let’s be good Samaritans and chase the tuna into our net," Ian replied, eyes sparkling.
They moved quickly towards the tuna with Ian giggling and muttering ’tuna’ over and over.
The harpoon flew straight and true, piercing the tuna’s gills. The same method they used before, they have continued to use it. Not because they want to, but because proper bone harpoons and other tools haven’t been made yet.
As soon as the harpoon pierced the gills, the tuna became rampant. It no longer cared about its toys. It swerved wildly in the water, dragging the team along.
When the group that was starving saw this, they began to curse about them stealing their prey.
"Oi, who the fuck are you?" a bearded man called out.
"That’s our fish," a tall man shouted.
When they saw the group moving further away, they started the engine and madly rushed after them. They gritted their teeth, thinking they finally had something to eat, and then someone came and stole it away.
Their anger was soaring higher than their hunger.
Thus, the chase began. The tuna pulled the Nightfall members, and the starving people chased Nightfall.
