Seven Years Later:
"Uncle Savio, Father asked me to deliver this to you," Alina said warmly, setting a wooden box down on the living room table.
Savio looked up from his seat, a hint of surprise in his eyes. "Oh, my dear, you didn’t need to trouble yourself. I could have easily sent someone to fetch it."
Alina smiled gently. "I insisted, Uncle. I told Father not to bother you. Besides," she added playfully, "I’m here to take your daughter out. I hope you won’t mind if we spend a little time at the market together?"
"Why do you want only my sister to accompany you?" a voice called from the hallway, laced with mild indignation. It was Savio’s son, Allerick, stepping into the room with a furrowed brow. "Let me come along as well."
Alina turned toward him, her smile turning teasing. "Sorry, Allerick," she said, crossing her arms with mock disappointment. "But maybe you should go spend time with those ’so-called’ friends of yours, the same ones you ditched me for just two days ago. Remember that?"
Allerick opened his mouth to respond but fell silent, clearly caught off guard. Meanwhile, Savio, who had begun examining the contents of the wooden box, chuckled at the playful exchange. Inside were neatly arranged scrolls, sealed letters, and various important documents, likely matters his brother had sent for review.
Just then, Ivelin, Savio’s graceful wife, entered the room. She wiped her hands on her apron, having come from the kitchen, and offered a warm smile.
"Alina, dear, come have a seat. You must be tired from the journey," she said kindly.
Alina immediately straightened and offered a polite bow. "Good afternoon, Aunt Ivelin."
"Lina!" Roseline exclaimed fondly, her eyes lighting up as she down the stairs.
"Sorry to keep you waiting, Alina," Roseline said as she entered the room, adjusting the small satchel slung over her shoulder. "Let’s go. Mother, Father—there’s a festival happening in the town square."
Ivelin looked up from where she stood near the table. "Wait, take some money with you," she said, reaching for a small pouch. "But before you go, the two of you should at least have lunch."
Roseline shook her head gently. "Mother, we’ve already planned to eat outside. There’s a lot of food at the festival, and we didn’t want to miss out."
Savio, still seated with scrolls in hand, glanced up with a soft smile. "Let the girls go. It’ll do them good to enjoy the day."
"I’ll go with them as well," Allerick chimed in quickly, stepping forward with a hopeful look, clearly not ready to be left behind.
"No, thank you. Go have fun with your friends," Alina said firmly, casting Allerick a side glance filled with playful disapproval.
Allerick folded his arms and replied with a grin, "Matthew and the others are meeting me at the market anyway. So, it makes perfect sense for us to go together."
He straightened his shoulders with mock pride. "Besides, I’m a big boy now, fully capable of protecting both of you, should danger arise."
Roseline rolled her eyes, already anticipating the banter that would follow. She went to her mother and took the money from her.
"But you lost to me, Allerick. Have you forgotten already?" Alina teased, a smug smile playing on her lips as she raised an eyebrow at him.
Allerick scoffed, brushing a hand through his hair. "That was because I went easy on you. You are the Alpha’s daughter. I didn’t want to hurt your pride."
"Whatever you say," Alina muttered under her breath, clearly unconvinced. She then turned to Savio and Ivelin with a graceful nod. "We’ll be heading out now. Goodbye, Uncle Savio. Aunt Ivelin."
Taking Roseline’s hand, Alina led her toward the door. The two girls stepped out of the mansion, their laughter echoing faintly as Allerick followed close behind, still grumbling to himself.
From the doorway, Ivelin watched them go, a small smile tugging at her lips. "Those two are always at each other’s throats when they’re together," she remarked fondly.
She turned toward her husband, who was still reviewing the scrolls. "Lunch is ready. You can finish the work later, it’s time to eat."
"Hmm." Savio hung his arm around Iveline’s shoulder and headed to the dining room.
~~~~~
Zenna stood by the fireplace, gazing fondly at the family portrait that hung on the wall. In her arms, she cradled her baby boy, his soft breaths warming her skin. Halio had turned six months old just a few weeks ago.
Radulf had been hesitant about having a second child, especially after witnessing the toll her first pregnancy had taken on her. It had been a difficult time, and he couldn’t bear the thought of putting her through that again.
But Zenna had insisted. Her longing for another child, for a sibling to their daughter, had softened his resolve. Eventually, he relented, and thankfully, this time, everything had gone smoothly. Both Zenna and the baby were healthy and thriving.
"Look, Halio," Zenna whispered gently, shifting him slightly so he could see the portrait. "That’s Mama, Papa, and your big sister." Her voice softened further, filled with affection. "And see? That’s you in my arms, so tiny back then. We had this painted just after you were born."
She smiled, brushing a kiss to his forehead as Halio blinked up at the painting, his little hand reaching out curiously.
His chubby fingers curling slightly as his bright, inquisitive eyes, just like Zenna’s, looked up at the world around him. Then, in a tender, almost whisper-like voice, he murmured, "Ma... Ma..."
Zenna’s heart fluttered at the sound. It was the first time he had said it.
"Say it again, baby," Zenna whispered, her fingers gently caressing Halio’s soft cheek. "Say ’Mama’ again."
"Ma..." Halio murmured in a soft voice but not able to say Mama.
Zenna’s breath hitched as her eyes welled with tears. Her heart raced with joy. Radulf needed to hear this. Their son had just called her.
"Say ’Papa’... go on, sweetheart. Say ’Pa,’" she encouraged, her eyes locked with Halio’s large, doe-like gaze filled with wonder.
"Pa!" Halio giggled, the sound like music in the quiet room.
A voice from behind made Zenna spin around. "Did Halio just call me ’Pa’?" Radulf asked, stepping into the room with wide eyes.
"Yes, Radulf," Zenna beamed. "He’s started making sounds. Real ones."
Radulf crossed the room in a second, gently lifting Halio into his arms. His hands, though large and strong, held the baby with astonishing tenderness. "Say it again, little one. Call me Papa."
Halio wriggled in his father’s arms, giggling with glee. His small hands reached for Radulf’s cheeks, patting them clumsily before waving in the air. "Pa... Ma..."
He repeated the words like a chant which was pure and joyful, and in that moment, it felt as if the entire world had stopped around them.
It was a feeling beyond words, too profound to be captured in any language. Radulf pressed a gentle kiss to Halio’s forehead, his heart full of overwhelming love.
He then wrapped his arms around Zenna, pulling her close while cradling their son between them, the warmth of the moment enveloping them all. 𝒻𝘳ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝒷𝘯ℴ𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝑐ℴ𝑚
Halio, his little face soft and content, let out a small yawn, signaling the need for rest. Zenna carefully took him from Radulf’s embrace as she cradled their son in her arms. "Let me help him sleep," she murmured softly.
She gently laid him down in the cradle, her hands rocking it back and forth with a soothing rhythm. Radulf stood beside her, his gaze never leaving Halio, a quiet joy radiating from him as he watched their baby boy.
"Our Halio’s already making sounds," Radulf said with a proud smile, his voice soft but full of emotion. "Before we know it, he’ll be walking and running around. Alina is going to be so happy to hear her little brother talking."
Zenna smiled lovingly at Radulf, watching Halio’s peaceful face as the cradle swayed gently. Their family was growing, and every moment felt like a beautiful new Chapter in their lives.
"Indeed. I feel so happy. Everyday is filled with pure love and joy for us, Radulf," Zenna stated. Helio’s eyes had shut as the baby had fallen into a peaceful slumber.
"Because we started believing in the good. We have grown into a big family, Zenna. Both our babies are going to take forward our legacy," Radulf stated.
Zenna turned to face him and pressed a soft kiss on his lips. Her hands wrapped around his neck as she stared deeply into his green eyes.
"Radulf, I love you. Thank you for believing in us. Look how far we both have come," Zenna stated.
Radulf’s hand remained on her back, holding her gently.
"You made me believe in love and beautified my entire world. Indeed, we have come so far. I love you, Zenna." Radulf leaned down and kissed her this time before hugging her.
’The future I’ve never dreamt of came with a surprise to me.’
