Smiling to himself, Park gave the room another slow look, mostly because his mind still refused to accept that all of it belonged to him.
Calling it a bedroom was almost insulting. The private sitting space alone was larger than the studio apartment he had spent years paying rent for in his old life, and that was before counting the actual bedroom, the study, two dressing rooms, the bath, the private dining area and the balcony overlooking the Bennett estate.
His old landlord would have taken one look at this place, divided it into six units with walls thin enough to hear your neighbor regret his marriage, installed a communal toilet somewhere inconvenient, then advertised the whole thing as premium metropolitan living.
’The truly miserable part is tenants would have fought over it.’
Park let himself fall deep into the couch, and the leather accepted him with a soft, expensive sigh. Even the furniture here had better manners than most people he had known. It did not creak, protest or threaten to collapse beneath him and simply received his body as though it had spent the entire day waiting for someone sufficiently important to sit down.
For a while, he was tempted to do nothing more demanding than stare around and enjoy the outrageous promotion his living conditions had become.
Yesterday, he had been an actor with more ambition than money, counting expenses and pretending instant noodles were a lifestyle choice.
’Today, I have my own wing in a mansion buried behind a miniature forest, with enough rooms to misplace myself in before breakfast.’
The universe had finally apologized.
’Very late, admittedly.’
But Park was not petty enough to reject compensation.
He had a whole new life to wander around admiring the place, though.
What he did not have was the patience to leave the Beginner Package unopened any longer, especially when four gifts remained sitting inside it with names that sounded increasingly suspicious.
The Insta-Boost was straightforward enough. The Abilities Box probably contained more tools meant to sharpen his acting and idol career. Perfect Crown sounded like the System had named a reward after staring at him for too long, while Spoiled by System sounded less like an ability and more like a promise to destroy his work ethic.
It was no strange that those last two interested him the most.
They had the sort of names Systems gave to rewards that were unfair, shamelessly overpowered and probably buried beneath enough vague wording to avoid accepting responsibility later.
Park shifted deeper into the couch and rested his head against the leather.
’Well then. Let us not keep the lady waiting.’
The thought had barely settled before he remembered that the System had never actually claimed to be female.
He paused, one corner of his mouth lifting.
"Yeah, whatever."
Park called for the panel.
Blue light gathered in front of him, thin lines sketching themselves across the air before unfolding into a familiar translucent screen.
[Ding! Beginner Package Rewards]
[Congratulations, Host, you’ve received:
Abilities Box]
Five cards appeared in a neat row, each bordered by a quiet glow.
They looked expensive, which was impressive considering they were made entirely from light, and the first card turned over before Park could accuse the System of unnecessary theatrics.
[Peerless Male Siren
—The Host’s voice carries overwhelming emotional resonance and hypnotic arresting charm. Any listener will feel the longing, grief, desire, nostalgia, tenderness or heartbreak contained within it. The effect grows stronger in proportion to the genuine emotion the Host pours into the performance.
The Host can sing in any pitch, voice, range or musical style without strain.
Note: The Host may also rapidly create songs and lyrics in any genre, including melody, composition and freestyle, drawing inspiration from experiences, surroundings or even ordinary objects.
Category: Singing and Song Creation]
Park’s brows rose slowly.
’A voice capable of carrying emotion directly into people, complete vocal freedom, instant composition, lyrics and freestyle creation?’
He could probably now stare at the curtains for thirty seconds and produce a chart-topping heartbreak song about two pieces of fabric doomed never to meet because the window kept them apart?
"Not bad," he murmured.
It was a shameless understatement, but he refused to flatter the System too early.
’The bastard might become confident and start charging me later.’
The second card turned.
[Mourner’s Tongue
—The Host CAN summon any emotion required by a scene and play/act it as though it were truly his own. Tears, rage, joy, terror, shame, grief, desire and despair may be called forth at will.
The Host’s voice carries every register demanded by the role: the whisper, the scream, the lover’s murmur, the dying confession, the broken laugh and the final lie and the Host’s face and body will be arranged into any expression required by the moment.
Note: Listeners and observers will mistake the performance for complete sincerity.
Category: Acting]
Park read the description twice, and the more he considered it, the more disgusting the ability became.
Some actors spent years learning how to reach the right emotion without looking as though they were fighting a difficult bowel movement. Some used painful memories, listened to sad music or stood in dark corners and demanded silence while preparing themselves for three seconds of crying on camera.
Park, apparently, could now simply decide that his entire family had died in a tragic accident and produce grief so convincing the crew might begin collecting funeral donations.
No more waiting for emotion to arrive and ruining the first two takes because the scene had not settled properly inside him.
He could become whatever the scene required before the camera finished focusing.
That one alone could turn an excellent actor into a terrifying one.
The third card opened.
[Drowned Library
—Any text the Host reads will be recalled with perfect accuracy.
Any script placed in the Host’s hands may be memorized completely and permanently within two attentive readings. Dialogue, scene order, stage direction, revisions and written notes can not be forgotten.
The Host will, however, never again forget a sentence that he has read... for a lifetime.
Category: Memorization]
Park’s amusement thinned.
His eyes stopped on the final line and remained there longer than he intended.
’I can live with that much, can’t I?’
The System had not highlighted it in red. There was no warning symbol, ominous sound and no kindly notice suggesting he consider the psychological consequences before proceeding. It had simply placed the cost beneath the reward in the same calm administrative tone, as though permanent emotional damage belonged beside the technical specifications.
Then again what was bad about remembering all your scripts?
Park breathed out through his nose and continued to move to the next card.
[Flawless
—The Host’s performance ability becomes absolute perfect and flawless under any condition. Whether acting, singing, dancing, speaking or appearing before an audience, the Host may deliver a complete, precise and emotionally accurate performance despite extreme pressure, distraction, exhaustion, illness, emotional turmoil or intoxication.
Timing, expression, vocal control, memory and presence will remain unbroken. Once the Host begins performing, the performance will can not degrade.
Category: All-Rounder]
A grin spread across Park’s face before he even finished reading.
’Now this is filthy, System. Ain’t you cute!’
Every actor Park had ever admired in his old life had eventually admitted to ruining a take because they were tired, distracted, heartbroken, hungover, sick, furious with the director or privately considering whether murder would damage the production schedule.
Singers cracked under pressure. Dancers missed timing when exhaustion settled into their muscles.
Even brilliant performers had bad nights because brilliance was still trapped inside a human body.
’And I have been dismissed from that entire category of failure.’
He could arrive on set after three hours of sleep maybe after having to fuck his lady or ladies the entire night, with a fever, a romantic scandal, a hostile director or half the Empire calling for his public execution for bedding the Queen herself and the Queen Dowager and a few princesses, then step beneath the lights and deliver the scene as though his life had never contained inconvenience.
That’s not to say the ability did not make him healthier, calmer or more responsible.
It merely ensured his bad decisions would never become visible in the final cut.
Park liked it already...
