He had already chosen violence he might as well carry on...
"You spend all day walking around looking beautiful, terrifying, and completely unavailable, then you smile once and suddenly the rest of us are expected to continue functioning like nothing happened."
Quinn looked back at the road, but faint warmth touched the tips of her ears.
Park almost applauded.
’There it is.’
The blush that came with a victory that tasted better than any audition callback. He was studying that faint pink like it was the first glowing review of his entire cursed existence. Funny how the woman who could probably kill a man with a rolled-up dossier was currently losing a battle to her own ears.
"I understand now," he continued gravely. "It’s a security tactic."
"A security tactic?"
"You smile, everyone freezes, and the threat forgets why they came. Brilliant. Efficient. Slightly evil but I respect it."
"Master Bennett."
"Park."
Her lips pressed together.
He leaned closer, shameless enough to enjoy every second of it.
"Seriously, though. How are you supposed to blend in anywhere?"
Quinn’s fingers adjusted slightly around the wheel.
"That is one reason I was selected. Your recent work as an actor requires protection capable of entering studios, production sets, rehearsals, and public venues without drawing unnecessary attention."
Park stared at her in open disbelief.
"Without drawing attention?"
"Yes."
"You?"
Quinn’s eyes narrowed slightly in the mirror.
Park smiled, slow and delighted.
"Quinn, your face alone could interrupt traffic. I’ve seen it happen before and I’m watching it happen right now in this very car."
A small silence followed.
He continued before she could recover:
"You have eyes that make people confess to crimes they haven’t committed, a smile worth starting a minor international incident over, and that suit fits you so perfectly I’m beginning to suspect it was designed by an enemy of male concentration. Possibly several enemies working together."
The warmth in Quinn’s ears spread.
Park noticed.
He was studying her as though her blush were the first positive review of his career and he intended to frame it.
"And then there’s the rest of you," he said.
"Park."
"What? I’m being honest."
"You are being inappropriate."
"Beautifully inappropriate?"
Her jaw tightened, but there was no real anger in it and that encouraged him, Park had been reborn without survival instincts and the halo was actively cheering from the sidelines.
"You’re tall, elegant, strong enough to make half the guards behind us question their masculinity, and somehow every step you take still looks graceful." His gaze lingered openly on her reflection. "You look like someone dressed a war goddess for a state dinner and then told her to try not to kill anyone before dessert."
Quinn finally looked at him; the blush had reached her cheeks now, soft and unmistakable beneath her controlled expression.
Park smiled:
Uptight, military, impossible to read or whatever, Quinn was still a woman.
And what woman disliked compliments, especially when they came from a face as offensively handsome as his?
The Cursed Attractive Presence was working overtime tonight, and he was shameless enough to weaponize it.
"You seem different today," Quinn said.
Park rested his chin against his hand.
"Better different?"
"I haven’t decided."
"Take your time. I’ll remain handsome while you investigate."
Quinn looked away again, though the corners of her lips had betrayed her.
Park sank back into his seat, pleased beyond all reasonable measure.
Victory. Not total win, but progress so sweet it almost made the risk of shoulder dislocation worth it.
"Mother has suffered a terrible loss."
"The Chancellor?"
"She lost you."
"She reassigned me."
"Exactly. Tragic."
Quinn shook her head once but Park’s gaze stayed on her and never left her.
"My gain, though."
This time, he let the words settle without hiding them beneath a joke.
Quinn’s eyes lifted again.
Park held them through the mirror.
"I mean it," he said. "I’m glad it’s you."
Something in her expression softened, it was only a little but enough, "I will perform my duties properly," she said.
"Oh, I’m sure you will." His voice lowered, warmer now. "Take good care of me, Quinn."
"I intend to."
Park smiled.
"Good. Because I’m looking forward to having you...
"...around."
Her gaze remained on his for a heartbeat too long before she returned it to the road.
Park leaned back, satisfaction blooming through him and he truly was looking forward to it.
’Very much.’
The System had called him a shameless pervert.
For once, it had shown remarkable restraint.
By the time the convoy approached the immense outer walls of the Crown District, the colour had only just begun to fade from Quinn’s face.
Park watched the final traces of pink disappear and considered the absurd generosity of his new life.
Quinn had been second-in-command of his stepmother’s personal detail and the second woman the Royal Chancellor trusted near the centre of her own security and some of her personal life too.
Now she belonged to his security.
A fruitful encounter delivered directly to his door, Lucky had apparently decided auditions were far too small a playground.
And the most dangerous blessing of the Marvelous Halo, the Cursed Attractive Presence, had already begun weaving its quiet ruin. Quinn was disciplined, cautious, and built from enough self-control to frighten lesser men.
Yet she had laughed with him like never before or anything she’ ever managed to do with anyone of his family not even the old Park; she even blushed beneath his praise and looked at him as though the quiet boy she remembered had disappeared, leaving behind someone far more troublesome.
’Gods, it’s finally good to be pretty.’ His pretty face was getting him to places unlike the old him who used to suffer because of it.
Park was becoming increasingly convinced that the System had started rearranging his life long before he opened his eyes in that hospital. And somewhere in the middle of it all, a woman who could break him was starting to smile like she might not want to.
Ahead, the walls of the Crown District rose from the darkness.
They were immense and pale beneath the night lights, stretching in both directions until the road itself seemed to vanish between them. The gates at their centre stood tall enough to admit a marching army without lowering its banners.
The two Maybachs did not slow for inspection.
The Bennett flags stirred proudly above their polished hoods while the Bennett crests gleamed where ordinary number plates should have been.
Recognition passed through the security system without a word as the gates began to open; the stone and steel withdrew with stately silence, revealing the world beyond.
Park leaned toward the window.
The Crown District, until now preserved only inside borrowed memories, unfolded before his own eyes.
And Park had the unsettling feeling that flirting with Quinn would soon become the simplest part of his new life.
