Park stepped out of the bathroom looking like some broke isekai protagonist who just pulled the legendary gacha on his first free multi.
And honestly? Who the hell could blame him.
The System wasn’t quite on the same broken-tier as waking up in a whole new body after getting yeeted by a snowstorm... but it was close.
Close enough that it almost felt more important. A second life by itself was just extra XP grinding until the same sad ending but having a System in the second chance was the part that turned the whole thing into an actual power fantasy.
It was also completely mid-level unbelievable.
If he tried explaining this blue-screened nonsense to anyone out in the ER — the tired nurses, the old man speedrunning crossword puzzles and that sharp-eyed nurse whose lipstick already screamed "potential bad ending" — they’d slap him with a psych ward quest faster than he could say "Isekai moment."
Not that he was dumb enough to try. He’d already died once; he wasn’t speedrunning a second death to mental health paperwork.
’The nice thing about being the only one who can see the divine cheat menu,’ he thought his head, ++’is that there’s nobody around to argue about the seating chart. Classic solo player advantage.’
Understanding the System (and himself) was the next mandatory side quest. He owed himself that much before he opened the door and walked back into a world that had apparently been aura-farming him for free this whole time.
Lucky for him, the System wasn’t the complicated labyrinth it pretended to be.
It was actually stupidly simple — almost insultingly so.
Or at least it was designed that way for a host whose tech skills peaked at remembering his own Netflix password on a good day.
Everything boiled down to missions:
It would throw quests at him — these quests were going to random ones, sometimes situation-based and also emergency flags and opportunity flags he wouldn’t see coming but the system will and issue these quests to — and it would be his job to clear them like a good little main character he was about to be.
"Random," Park muttered, testing the word with full cynicism. "How wonderfully theatrical of you. Real peak webnovel writing."
[Random,] the panel confirmed, [in the sense that the System selects. The Host reacts.]
The voice in his head was flat and completely deadpan, like a machine reading a receipt at 3 a.m.
Just pure fact, delivered at the exact speed of those empty airport announcements that nobody listens to.
The rogue part in the back of Park’s skull tipped an imaginary hat.
A straight man; he could work with a tsundere System that refused to be funny.
Missions came with different weights, the panel continued.
[Penalties are assigned according to significance, and rewards are given or penalties, but minor missions carry no penalty upon failure. Major missions do.]
He understood that part clearly.
So... say the System wants him to get the cute nurse’s number and he fumbles it like a mid-tier NPC. It would be a small mission and he won’t be penalized if he failed.
Just a missed flag and we all move on with our tragic lives.
He tilted his head at himself in the mirror, still watching that cognac-gold stare that looked way too ready for chaos.
But say the System, in its infinite good taste, wants Park to actually bed her properly — and he disappoints her; that was a big mission with both his and the System’s reputations on the line here. And his name gets dragged through the mud like a failed harem route.
’That,’ he murmured with the small dark relish imagining consequences, ’is the kind of failure where proper system actually castrates a host for. And rightly so; I would castrate me too, in fairness. A man has standards. Even if those standards are currently living in a hospital gown that lost the war against my shoulders.’
[The System has no comment on The Host’s standards and perverse on the mission example, at this time.]
Park laughed under his breath; one hand braced on the sink like he was about to get hit with a cutscene. The pure administrative dryness of that delivery was somehow better than any actual joke.
The System sounded like a tax office.
’A very polite, very unkillable tax office that has recently been given the power to castrate players who failed their quests.’
That was basically the whole setup. Missions on one side and the Host Status on the other.
And to see the status, all Park had to do was call for it — which he did now, eyes warming into a huge devil smirk like sealed devil finally stepping out of his prison for the long-awaited World Domination quest.
The blue panel bloomed right in front of him. In the mirror behind it, those cognac-gold eyes warmed into a slow devil’s smirk —
[Host Status.]
[Name — Park Nathaniel Bennett.]
[Age — nineteen.]
[Overall Standing — Tier: Bronze (Unknown) Public Recognition: 0.9%. Industry Standing: Unranked.]
Park read his own name and let the small private ache of it settle where it needed to settle. Park Nathaniel Bennett. Nineteen. He shook his head and the name away carefully, next to the half-formed memories of a mother he hadn’t met yet and a small damp bedroom with some mid-tier poster on the wall.
Classic isekai starter pack.
Then he deliberately let his eyes drift to the rest of the screen like a player checking their trash stats.
He had spent the last few minutes asking the System, in a half-thinking way, what all this actually meant — and the System, patient as a filing cabinet that hated him personally, had explained:
Overall Standing was The Host’s position in the entertainment industry as a whole. A weighted average of three things.
Public recognition (the percentage of random people who could put a face to his name and how popular he was)
Industry standing (where he exactly stood in the whole industry and which place he held in the industry)
which was Unranked because he was no shit)
And the System’s own private ranking — merciless, secret, and not shown to him yet because of course it wasn’t.
’Classic System bullshit.’
His public recognition currently sat at a tragic 0.9%. His industry standing was Unranked, which the System had helpfully clarified as:
[The Host is, at present, a nobody in particular.]
"Charming," Park said, wearing the news like it was a free trial suit that would expire in three days. "Do go on. Really sell me on how mid I currently am."
Bronze.
Yeah. This was the exact trash tier Park was stuck on, and the exact trash tier he’d always been stuck on in both lives. Bronze was the holding pen for wannabes — the talentless mid-tier NPCs and the actual Peerless-in-waiting all crammed into the same sad little room because the world was too blind to tell the difference yet:
A face with zero name value and headshot rotting on some casting agency’s overcrowded server.
At this level no casting director ever returned your calls, no director remembered your audition by lunch, no camera gave you more than the absolute minimum screen time. You were the boy filling the third row of the ensemble.
You ’re the disposable corpse who appeared only in last episode for three seconds. You ’re, at best, a maybe — and maybes came in their thousands, all fighting for the same crumbs as broke extras in a webnovel prologue.’
Silver.
Is where name finally stuck to the face. Not a real name — nobody was asking for you yet — but casting directors could pull your file without Googling first, and trade papers sometimes spelled your name right on a good day.
Silver was where you started booking actual parts on actual shows and your agent stopped ghosting you like a toxic ex because now your face has quietly started collecting online stans without you even trying.
’Silver is the tier where the industry finally acknowledges you exists... and that alone is more than most of the Bronze boys would ever crawl their way to.’
