’Now, I should train while using my deathcore and try to understand how to use my mana.’
Mana control was one of the most important but, at the same time, hardest things for a hunter. Since, most of the time, hunters would awaken their mana later in their lives, it would come as a different type of energy, like a tail suddenly being added to one’s body.
Therefore, it was very hard for people to master the usage of mana of any attribute. That alone showed how talented some people were, as some could easily manipulate the mana imbued with elements as easily as breathing.
Just like that, I entered the general training grounds again as I made my way toward the combat rooms.
"FUCK! This is too hard."
"AHHHHH! MY BACK!"
"DAMN! IT HURRTTZ!"
I paused a bit, snapping toward that odd scream and seeing a scene in one of the blocks.
The training room was used for instinct reaction. It would throw things at you to deflect with increasing intensity.
And this unknown guy set it at Level 5, only to get his balls hit and roll on the ground. The chilling scene made many people tremble.
And I would be lying if I said it didn’t affect me. No man wants to get hit in his balls. Thinking this, I looked down.
"This world is filled with so many maniacs. For my future and my brother’s safety, I should order a strong guard to protect me from unforeseeable situations." 𝐟𝕣𝗲𝕖𝕨𝗲𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝗲𝚕.𝗰𝚘𝐦
It was already 8; class would begin at 9.
Thirty minutes of training and thirty minutes of rest.
’I won’t be able to stay there for a long time,’ I thought to myself, seeing the people that had already started piling up inside the combat rooms. ’But, let’s make it as much time as we can.’
As I locked the training room door behind me, I took a deep breath, feeling the concentrated mana pressing against my skin. The room seemed alive, its walls faintly glowing with a bluish hue, and the air hummed with energy.
The circles gathered mana along with oxygen, dumping here to enhance our performance.
I stepped forward, and the AI’s mechanical voice greeted me.
[Welcome, Lukas Star. Hunter Department. First-year. Student Rank 18924/19000]
"Quite convenient..."
The announcement stung, but I pushed it aside. "Adjust to stage one, with 1.5X gravity," I commanded.
[Understood. Adjusting gravity... Training will begin in three seconds.]
3... 2... 1...
"Gah!" I gasped, tumbling down a bit.
The shift was instant. A crushing weight settled over me, pressing down on my body and making every movement an effort. My knees buckled slightly as I took a step forward.
"Damn, this is harder than I thought," I muttered, my voice strained.
[The discs will start hovering in 30 seconds. Prepare yourself, cadet.]
Taking a deep and heavy breath, I pulled out a dagger and swung it to warm up.
’Dagger... It’s a great weapon, but I can’t get that feeling.’
With the Huntsman class, I was going to learn many weapons, but I needed to have primary mastery. A weapon of my choice.
Sword... Spear were too long for me to use... Bows were only suitable for sniping...
Remembering all my experiences, I thought of a possibility.
"Blade... Dual Blades... Shorter than a sword, larger than daggers."
Meanwhile, the countdown ended, and the lights dimmed. The hum in the room intensified as glowing elemental discs materialized in mid-air.
Each disc swirled with a different element—fire, water, wind, and lightning—that could attack. My task was to catch up to them and destroy them.
Before I could fully register them, the first disc, a fiery one, darted toward me, spewing flames.
"Focus!" I told myself, sidestepping the attack. The heat singed my arm as it passed, making me grit my teeth.
Another disc, this time water, followed almost immediately. Its sharp edge grazed my leg, leaving a stinging, icy sensation.
My movements felt sluggish under the increased gravity. Each dodge, each step, felt like dragging my body through thick mud.
Then came the lightning disc.
CRACKLE
The jolt of electricity hit me square in the shoulder, sending searing pain through my body.
"ARGH!" I screamed, collapsing to the floor. My muscles spasmed as the energy coursed through me.
Thankfully, the disc stopped attacking as I fell.
I forced myself to my feet, trembling but determined. The discs weren’t slowing down. They swirled and attacked in unpredictable patterns, forcing me to stay alert.
One slipped past my defenses, slamming into my back and knocking me down again. My palms skidded across the smooth floor, and I bit back another cry of pain.
"Get up, Lukas," I whispered to myself, pushing against the gravity. My body ached, but I refused to give in.
As I dodged another disc, I tried to channel mana through my limbs. "If I can just..." I muttered, focusing hard.
My movements started to improve slightly. The mana gave me a brief surge of speed, just enough to evade a wind disc that tore through the air inches from my face.
The discs kept coming, relentless and unyielding. I slipped again, my ankle twisting under the weight of the gravity. My chest hit the floor, the impact knocking the wind out of me.
"Get it together," I growled, crawling to my knees.
I could feel my mana stirring, but controlling it under this pressure was almost impossible. The lightning disc circled back, and I braced myself.
CRACK
Another shock hit me, and I screamed again, the pain making my vision blur.
"Enough!" I roared, slamming my fist into the floor.
Summoning every ounce of strength, I funneled my mana into my legs, forcing myself upright. I didn’t know if this was the correct way to do it, but I went with the flow.
My muscles protested, my body screaming in agony, but I stood tall.
The fire disc was next, its heat almost unbearable as it neared. This time, I didn’t dodge. I let my mana flow into my arm, and with a swift strike, I lunged my blade into the disc.
BANG!
The flames dissipated, leaving me sweating but triumphant. Seeing it down, I jerked my arm to throw it and concentrated on the other.
The other discs seemed to sense my shift in resolve. They moved faster, more erratic, testing me further, and as I pursued them, I could clearly feel the rush of adrenaline enhancing my senses, letting me dodge the onslaught.
I stumbled, fell, got up, and fought on. Each time I hit the ground, the urge to quit gnawed at me, but I refused to let it win.
By the time the session ended, I was on my knees, gasping for air. My clothes were drenched in sweat, and every muscle in my body screamed in protest.
The AI’s voice broke the silence.
[Stage one training completed. Total time: 23 minutes and 12 seconds.]
I laughed bitterly, wiping the sweat from my brow. "Barely made it..."
The room dimmed further as the discs vanished, leaving me in silence. I sat on the floor, my body aching, but a small smile crept onto my face.
I had survived.
Wiping the sweat, I looked at the timer, but then my mood fell in the next instant as I saw a huge glowing
[Record Time: 19 seconds.]
[Name: Edwin Valcrest]
"Is he even human!?"
...
Agonizing over the fact of just how far I was off the mark made me loathe myself. At this rate, was I just better than trash?
No, let’s not think that. I have yet to use all my moves. Things might have been different if I used Shadow Steps.
That’s how I quelled myself, but on second thought, I didn’t have any ability for offense.
Soul Reap was good for draining lifespan, but I needed to fulfill a certain set of conditions—like the gap shouldn’t be vast between the opponent and me, and I needed to touch the person.
"I should study my powers while keeping them hidden, lest they lump me with shitheads belonging to criminal groups."
Entering the class a bit earlier, I moved to the end, not daring to take the front seat. Because to sit there, I needed to engage in battle with a few dimwits.
As I was about to take my seat, I saw a heated gaze.
"So, you are finally here, you snitchy bastard."
I looked at the simplest ordinary mob-kun and smirked, "Do you want to get snitched again? With my face, you can try and see if girls don’t believe it and spread rumors."
The moment he heard this, his face fell.
