Saber stared at the huge vortex and sniffed, taking heavy gasps, only to scream in a dramatic manner.
"I am finally her—"
PAAAA! PAAAA!
"Move the fuck out of here!"
An angry roar startled Saber, who looked at me while I looked back and saw two huge trucks coming our way.
We moved aside, giving way along with others who grumbled.
"It’s the truck of Malcolm’s family from the Arcadia Empire. They were importing something."
"But why does it smell so much?"
"Like rotten, putrid flesh."
Saber glanced at me, asking if Malcolm’s family was someone big, noticing the guards and knights guarding the truck.
"Yes, they have some presence," I muttered softly, narrowing my eyes. In fact, it was better to say that they had some presence previously, but now they are just fallen nobles.
Moments later, the huge truck finally crossed the portal, after which we walked in.
.....
"Woah! This feels so nice and comfy. Quite different from the suffocating demon realm!" Saber gasped heavily, stepping out of the portal.
What greeted him was a vibrant world of roadblocks followed by large buildings.
Compared to the old monolithic fantasy structure of demons, the environment of the modern world piqued the interest of many.
Behind him, I walked, taking a moment to ponder. While the air certainly seemed fresh, you could feel the lack of mana in the air.
Despite being harsher conditions, the abrupt concentration of mana had a great effect on warriors.
I grabbed Saber back, who, like a curious child, was musing over everything.
"Saber, calm yourself. Though humans and demons interact freely, one can’t deny the hotheads who might butt in between."
"Oh!" Saber scratched his cheek in embarrassment.
"First, stay in the building, and then I will make some arrangements for you. Until then, stay quiet. Also, hide that horn."
Saber nodded, putting back his hood, and promised not to cause a stir. Hopefully, he keeps his word.
Dropping him in West Borough, where we rented an inn for him to stay, I headed to the academy.
.....
Unlike the time of departure, the security seemed to be quite heavy. The guards had a sharp aura, and a few gazed around sharply.
"Card..."
Entering one of the small gates for identification, I paused as the man asked for the card.
Picking it up, he entered details to keep the record.
"Hmm! 1st Yea— What the?" He screamed abruptly, staring at me, following which he gaped as if looking at a criminal.
His scream drew the attention of others, and suddenly I was under heavy scrutiny.
"Are you an idiot? How can you miss the 1st of the academy?"
"What do you mean? The academy session should begin tomorro—" I paused, realizing a grave mistake.
A very grave mistake.
FUCKKK! FUCKK!
I facepalmed and screamed inwardly. The time zone of the demon continent is two days behind the humans. Being there, I just forgot to keep the human time zone in account.
I cursed my naivety and then looked at the glaring guard checker.
"I wasn’t here, and due to carelessness, I forgot to keep tabs on the change in time zone."
Stopping further embarrassment, I took my card, gave a bow, and dashed ahead.
"Damn! Why???? Out of all plausible bad scenarios, why did it have to be this?"
Running at top speed, I looked at my watch. It was almost 10, and the class would have already begun.
The best thing to do was to stay absent today, but if I did that, I would be fucked if the teachers knew that this student was there but didn’t come to class and gave me negative points, which would be added at the end, resulting in a low rank.
I don’t know about others, but I care about the grade. Moreover, there were chances of the professor coming late most often.
SWISH!
Gliding across the corridor, I ran through an empty hall, looking around for my classroom.
As I ran, I couldn’t help but curse myself.
It’s always the protagonist who appears late, and I am going to break that streak for a mere third-rate extra.
AB214...
"AB214... There it is."
With a hint of nervousness along with excitement, I finally glanced at a huge open doorway. Slowing a bit, I took a breath and decided to take a sneak peek, but just as I did—
I was almost blinded by the reflective color of various heads. From afar, it appeared as if I had found myself in a cotton candy shop of various hairs.
Hardly had I taken a look when I heard a chuckle.
"Look who is here?"
GULP!
Swallowing my saliva, my eyes darted toward a hazelnut-haired woman who nudged her specs to hide those vibrant bluish eyes staring at me coldly.
"You!"
"Yes, Miss!" I answered monotonously.
"Do you belong here?" she asked fiercely.
"Ye..." My eyes widened midway, feeling goosebumps crawling over my skin due to the reaction of my Hunter instinct ringing bells loudly.
Feeling the danger, I cranked my neck to the right, bending my back with the utmost speed.
BOOOM!
CRANKLE!
A sonic boom blasted the air, striking the wall behind, swaying the windows, which burst open.
DRIP! DRIP!
A trail of blood dripped down from my left cheek. Rolling my eyes, I saw the sharp edge of heels that had grazed past my chair.
"AHHH!"
GASP!
The students gasped in horror, while a few weak-hearted ones almost had a heart attack.
In that faint moment, all I saw was this professor of mine disappearing to attack without any mercy. Thankfully, I managed to react.
"Hmm! That’s a very good reaction. I am impressed." She mused, pulling back her leg and observing me.
A brief pause lingered, making my back wet.
Looking down, she nudged her glasses. "Since you managed to avoid it, I will allow you to speak."
I opened my lips to speak, only to realize a very grievous pain. Due to the fast reaction, I might have dislocated something.
"Th...My..nec.."
Understanding something, she raised her palm and then chopped my neck.
BANG!
My vision darkened, and I found myself slamming onto the ground. I gritted my teeth to control my groan.
’Just how much embarrassment do I have to suffer today?’
"Stop lying on the floor, get up and speak." 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮
Raising my tired body, I muttered grievously, "I was caught up in an accident."
"What accident?" she asked, staring at me intently.
I pondered if I should say it before the entire class when she excused me, noticing my hesitation.
"Okay, let it be. Come to my office after class. We will talk. Now go and get a seat."
Sighing in relief, I walked, looking for a seat while making sure to hide my face.
From the corner of my eyes, I saw various mixed expressions. Some were amused, some were excited at my folly, some were unbothered, and some were disgusted.
’Don’t look.’
I reminded myself to stop my curiosity from getting the better of me. On one hand, I was dying to look at the main cast there.
As you were wondering why the main cast and top rankers were in my class or why I am the last-ranked combatant here—
The answer is simple.
That was to keep the balance between all the classes.
What is the most effective way to counter the class with rank 1? That was to pair it with the last rank to drag it down.
Simple yet effective. And I saw nothing wrong with it. Mixing up ranks among groups of hotheaded kids forces them to work harder to boost up their ranks—until you fall into a cycle of depression and misery.
A common problem for teens hitting puberty.
I made sure to take the least conspicuous place due to sheer embarrassment. I didn’t know I was capable of feeling this.
That was the last thing I didn’t like.
I was about to take my seat when I saw a boy grinning mischievously while using his phone to play some games at the back bench. Then he looked at me and smirked.
"Man, you might surely set a record for having the most negative aura."
"What a grand entrance. You know how to fuck up."
His phrase brought amusement and laughter around the back, causing a disturbance nearby that made the professor scream.
"Which idiot is whispering here?"
"Miss, it’s him! Cracking useless jokes at the back while looking at his smartphone instead of listening to you!" I shouted, pointing at the bastard, making him scream.
The boy’s expression turned grim as he looked ahead at the distorting face of the homeroom teacher and screamed.
"What the fuck?"
