Saber grasped, glaring at me for shifting the topic to him. Looking at the gloomy Gremlin, he sighed, squatting down.
"See, Gremlin, you need to be realistic. Lukas can’t save everyone, even if he tries. As for me, as long as the people close to me are saved, I am good. And don’t treat him as a ruthless guy, ’cause he risked for us, didn’t he?"
Gremlin nudged his face and spoke, "He could have saved everything if he had informed the City Lord upon entering. Wouldn’t that have solved everything? The City Lord would have asked for help sooner and evacuated everyone."
"Chris would be alive, and so would Zag. Many people who are buried now and those who are suffering wouldn’t have to face the calamity," Gremlin shouted in irritation.
"And what made you think he would do that?"
Gremlin paused, hearing the cold voice, turning to me with a questioning gaze.
Looking at him coldly, I said, "What made you think he would believe my words?"
"Words of a mere frail human who came out of nowhere. Though the enmity between demons and humans lessened, the higher ones still think differently. So who knows, he wouldn’t have killed me?"
"He wouldn’t have—" Gremlin tried to refute my claims, but I wasn’t one to get undone.
"He might have asked how I know and tried to pry about me. It may even result in him killing me to gain some special powers, even though I don’t have anything like that."
Saber nodded at my words and spoke to support me, "Lukas’s outlook is entirely correct. He isn’t someone prominent enough to make such a difference, and don’t you know how demons are, Gremlin?"
Meeting those gazes, Gremlin flustered a bit, nudging down his head. Gremlin’s grievous look stirred my heart, but I stayed resolute.
"Gremlin, the world isn’t all roses and sunshine as you think. The water that looks pure gets darker than filth when going deeper. I am neither a saint nor a hero, and my capability is limited. One shouldn’t let his moral compassion and kindness obstruct his judgment. Exposing yourself too much won’t do any good," I spoke with a frown, trying to calm Gremlin, but seeing his expression, I knew he wasn’t ready to buy it.
"But you could have tried. Can’t you see how many people lost their lives? Look into the eyes of children—their innocence, their loves, their families—all of this could have been saved by a single decision of yours." Gremlin’s voice quivered, but it successfully made my head throb.
Until now, I hadn’t pondered about it, but as it struck me, Gremlin’s words managed to stir my heart a bit. I didn’t know who reacted to this.
Was it the kind, benevolent Lukas, or was it the truest me?
Who was the one feeling sensibility over it?
If it was originally Lukas, he might have burst into tears, witnessing others’ deaths due to the gash left by the traumatic experience.
But for me, it didn’t mean much. However, this is what irritated me. I felt it would be better to be off without emotion than having just a subtle feeling.
Carrying a part of the original Lukas that had influenced me, despite my brain telling me, Don’t let your thoughts wander hearing all these bullshits, I couldn’t help but feel restless.
As I closed my eyes, I could hear a certain familiar voice speaking to me and asking me the very same question.
Why didn’t you do it?
You know what is right, yet you turned a blind eye to it.
The world seemed to condemn me, deeming me guilty and giving me no leeway. Sensing my sanity slowly slipping away, I couldn’t help but resent Gremlin for all these shady words that irked me.
Massaging my temples, I tapped on my forehead a few times to focus.
Stop overthinking. You know it’s easier said than done.
The only way to stop all this was to inform the City Lord, but with no prior information about his character and behavior, it was just suicide—a rash gamble.
Gambling without knowing the odds of winning was pure bullshit.
There was no way it would have worked.
Saber, seeing the tense situation, opened his lips to speak, but I shut him up.
"There is no need for you to say anymore. Everyone has their own beliefs."
"What do you mean?" Gremlin asked in exaggeration.
Staring at him, I spoke bluntly, "Each one of us has our own beliefs and goals. There is no need to persuade others to change their beliefs."
In fact, there was a need, but I found all this discussion increasingly wasteful, so it was better to stop this farce.
Musing over my thoughts, I continued, "In the end, we just did all that was right. I had a hunch, but I can’t see and predict the future."
"If all of this didn’t happen after I warned them, do you know the consequences I would have faced?"
Gremlin was about to say something but abruptly closed his lips. From his look, I could tell that he was imagining the torture I would have gone through.
"As long as we do things with a clear conscience, we are good. And remember this, we can’t save everyone, and on the crossroads, people will always question our response."
Saber nodded, folding his hands, and then asked to shift the topic, "Now that we are free, what are you going to do?"
"I am a student of the Human Academy, so I need to go there. So what are you gonna do?" I asked before laying out a suggestion.
"Why don’t we stick together and form a mercenary group?" Saber suggested gleefully, but his happiness didn’t last long.
"No!" Gremlin refused adamantly.
"Why?"
Gremlin’s eyes gazed past Saber as he spoke, "Your beliefs don’t coincide with my goal. If we are gonna do it, I am gonna build my own team by having people of similar beliefs. I want people who can think with their heart, not their mind."
Saying this, he paused, looking at me.
"I apologize for condemning you previously without knowing the situation. I still find it difficult to digest. Maybe because I am not experienced and haven’t seen much of the world or because I am naive, but I wanted to walk on my belief, and I feel that I will be dragging you into a mess."
Saber turned towards me to persuade Gremlin, but I just laughed, "It’s okay. Let him do what he wants, and we will do what we want."
"Just because he decided to form his force doesn’t mean we will be separated. Our paths might be different, and so is the approach, but we all have one goal." I grinned.
"What is it?" Saber and Gremlin asked aloud.
"That’s to survive in this harsh world for a better life."
That was my earnest wish. Running like a madman after revenge isn’t the only thing.
Since I was given a second chance, after finishing things, I needed to clear my doubts.
Who am I? How did I get here? Who is responsible for all this, and what does he want?
And at the end of all, wouldn’t it be good to settle in?
And at the end of all, I wished to witness a truly happy ending with many sacrifices and then settle down peacefully to enjoy it.
Noticing their contemplation, I extended my hands.
"For survival."
Saber put his hand on mine without hesitation and looked around.
"Gremlin!"
Gremlin, lost in thought for a moment, finally smiled, "Okay, it seems you successfully roused me. That’s also what I aim for."
"Let’s survive until the end." With that, he slapped his hand on top of ours, making us scream.
"What the fuck? Can’t you hit gently?" Saber cried out, holding his hand, making me laugh.
