I have been wondering what was the final nail to the coffin that made Saber go berserk and walk the path of the villain.
Was it losing his loved ones or the way he lost the people he knew?
The puzzle that had been missing was slowly finding its fit with the presence of this Specter.
Saber might have escaped along with all the members, but unfortunately, they encountered this bastard who might have exerted their influence to make everyone kill one another until Saber was the only one to stay alive.
This was the very scene that started to break down Saber. Though I prevented this, I put myself in quite a dangerous situation. Honestly, all my senses were begging me to run cause this guy was out of the league, but I wanted to fight.
But why should I do something unreasonable?
Because this event is going to play a very crucial role later.
It was a test that might change the decisions.
Aside from that, I need an outlet to vent my frustration, my anger, and hatred. And this fucking maniac pricked those unsavory memories.
Sad memories of mine and Lukas’s mother’s death.
Out of the haze, the memory of Lukas’s mother while crying and fighting against the control of Specter was forced to kill me.
That scene.
How can I forget those agonized eyes?
And on top of that, I felt my heart quivering seeing those lifeless gazes of my mother pretending to be happy as she departed from the world.
It’s time to start in earnest.
It’s time to cleanse the filth plaguing the world.
[Shadow Step.]
....
SWISH!
"Huh!"
The Specter was startled as its claws met the empty air. Just as his claws were a few inches away from the prey, I disappeared.
It looked away and then turned around abruptly while slashing.
SWISH!
A portion of the shadow was torn apart and disappeared into darkness, leaving behind a trail of spurting blood.
BANG!
A figure shot out from the shadow from behind debris and shot his gun.
BOOM!
Taking a step, the Specter dodged, leaving the bullet to strike debris behind, creating a small explosion.
Emerging out, I took a step back, clicking my tongue, and assessed the huge cut over my torso. I used a shadow step to get behind it and blast it away, but it managed to sense me, reacting quickly. I used the shadow step as fast as possible, but its finger grazed past gently, leaving behind a small gash.
The Specter lunged at me, closing the distance in the blink of an eye, its twisted grin revealing rows of teeth jagged as broken glass.
My pulse hammered as I realized my guns wouldn’t cut it at this range; I dropped them, hand flashing to the dagger sheathed at my side. In one swift motion, I drew the blade, which caught a sliver of rising moonlight, gleaming with an otherworldly sheen.
I slashed forward, aiming for the Specter’s midsection, but before the blade could even graze it, the Specter sidestepped with eerie grace, evading me like it was some casual dance. My heart sank as its expression twisted into a sneer. 𝗳𝐫𝚎𝗲𝚠𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝘃𝚎𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝗺
"Is that all you’ve got, little hunter?" it mocked, with a voice dripping with venomous disdain.
I don’t know how it knew I was a hunter. Maybe it was their innate skill.
"I expected a bit more, but it seems you are all talk, no bite."
Ignoring the jabs, I feinted low, hoping to catch it off guard, then quickly slashed upward, aiming for its throat. But it was no use—its movements were too fluid, too precise. The Specter sidestepped again, laughing as if this fight were a mere game.
I felt my blood starting to boil. My next strike came harder, quicker, aiming for its side. But once again, the Specter dodged, then retaliated with a swipe of its claws. I barely had time to twist out of the way, but it still grazed me, leaving a searing gash on my shoulder. The pain burned hot, and I bit down hard to stifle a gasp.
"Getting tired already?" it taunted, tilting its head with a wicked grin. "I thought you’d be more… entertaining."
I tightened my grip on the dagger, gritting my teeth against the pain. Every slash, every taunt, was fueling a deeper fury inside me.
"FUCK!" I cursed in anger and slashed again.
My mind was slowly getting clouded in anger.
But I knew I couldn’t afford to lose control. I needed to stay calm, wait for an opening.
"It’s influencing my emotions," I muttered, having a faint realization and calmed down.
Calming down, I started to work on the plan.
My fingers brushed against the scroll tucked in my pocket. If I could just get close enough to paste it on its back, I could lock this thing down.
Taking a shaky breath, I steadied myself and rushed forward, making my strikes look wild and desperate, hoping it would drop its guard.
As I charged, I could see the amusement in its eyes, the way it effortlessly dodged each attack. I slashed at its chest, but it slipped to the side and flicked its claws at me, landing another shallow cut along my ribs. I winced, blood seeping through my shirt.
I staggered back, gasping heavily, feeling every shallow cut the Specter had carved into me. My only chance was to trick it, to get close enough to paste the scroll onto its back. But for that, I’d need a perfect distraction and enough speed to pull it off without giving myself away.
I steadied myself, lowering my stance, dagger held loose in my grip.
What was more irritating was the Specter occupying Chris’s body taunting me.
"You talk big, but I’ve taken down worse," I taunted, watching its face twist into a sneer.
"Oh, really?" it chuckled, crossing its arms as if waiting for me to entertain it. "Let’s see what you’ve got, then."
Taking a shaky breath, I lunged forward, feinting to the left, but keeping my gaze fixed on its center. The moment it moved to intercept me, I slipped into the shadows, using Shadow Step to reappear right behind it, scroll in hand. My fingers tingled with anticipation as I raised the parchment, ready to slam it onto the back of its neck.
But the second I moved, the Specter twisted around, faster than I could react, its clawed hand flashing toward me. I felt a sharp, burning pain as its claws raked across my chest, tearing through flesh and forcing me back with brutal force. My vision blurred for a second as blood spattered the ground beneath me.
"You thought you could trick me?" It laughed, the sound hollow and cruel, as it loomed over me. "Pathetic."
I struggled to push myself up, the scroll slipping from my fingers as I gasped for air. The Specter reached down, lifting me by the collar with ease, its grin widening as it leaned close.
"Did you really think I wouldn’t notice that little trick? You’re not the first to try."
I clenched my teeth, fighting the pain, but every muscle felt like it was on fire. My mind raced, desperately trying to find another way out, another chance to strike. But the Specter’s grip tightened, pinning me in place as it chuckled.
"Come on, fight back. I thought you were supposed to be the hunter," it taunted, giving me a rough shake that sent fresh waves of pain shooting through my body.
Extending its claws, it tore open my shirt, and its nail circled around my heart, scratching my breastbone.
"Oh my! Your body has so many scars. You must have a rough heart."
I forced myself to meet its gaze, swallowing the pain and fear. "You haven’t seen anything yet."
But as I looked into its eyes, instead of fear, what came was laughter.
"Huh!"
As the Specter made a surprised expression, I immediately grabbed its hands and activated my predator gaze.
SWOOSH!
An overwhelming aura swept across the place.
My eyes went dark, like a black hole that wanted to devour everything. As the Specter’s glowing golden eyes met mine, a shudder went down its spine, freezing it like a statue.
Seeing it, I knew my plan worked.
"Gotcha!"
In the next moment, a shadow appeared out of dark smoke and raised the huge axe behind the Specter. Without giving it a moment to react, it slammed the axe down onto it.
....
Saber dashed down the through passage created between the debris that trembled due to the ongoing fight.
He breathed heavily as he forced himself onward while pushing the kids.
Seeing one of them falling down, Saber immediately grappled the kid and raised it up.
"Don’t stop, just run!"
Then as he ran, he heard a loud blast causing him to stop as he saw Gremlin and kids along with a nearby passerby running for their lives.
Behind him, he heard a grunt and roar of pain that made him ponder.
"Lukas..Will he be alright?"
He stopped to reflect and muttered.
’This..This isn’t right?’
Soon, memories of Lukas flashed through his mind. The countless hours spent training, the camaraderie, and Lukas’s unyielding drive to protect those around him. He couldn’t leave his friend to face that monster alone.
Determined, Saber stopped, pulling out a stealth potion from his pouch and then remembered Lukas’s words.
