The afternoon heat was just beginning to fade when Valex pulled his dark riding cloak tight around his broad shoulders. He pulled the heavy fabric up over his face, leaving only his sharp green eyes visible beneath the hood. Without word to his guards or Azure, he mounted his black stallion in the lower courtyard and rode out through the side gates, blending into the dusty roads that led toward the outer ring of the capital.
His mind was a relentless vice. The questions he had asked Azure earlier had left a bitter, metallic taste in his mouth. Her answers had been clumsy, her eyes tracking the floor like a guilty child. He needed a factual anchor, and there was only one man in the territory who held the truth about the royal metadata of the crown: Master Theron, the formal ring maker of the high court.
The stallion clattered to a halt outside a modest, heavy stone building tucked away from the main market. Valex dismounted, tossing the reins over the hitching post. He pushed the heavy wooden door open, the familiar scent of iron, charcoal, and refined oils hitting his senses.
Behind the counter stood Theron, an elderly alpha with thick glasses and hands stained grey from decades of working with precious metals. He was carefully polishing a silver goblet, but the moment the heavy door swung shut, his posture went rigid.
Valex pulled back his hood, letting the cloak fall to his shoulders.
Theron’s eyes widened slightly, and he immediately set down his tools, bowing his head in a deeply practiced, formal salute. "Your Highness. This is an unexpected honor. Had I known you were coming, I would have cleared the forge for your arrival."
"Rise, Theron," Valex said, his voice flat, deep, and carrying the cold weight of his royal authority. He did not step closer to the counter, maintaining a disciplined distance. "This is not an official visit. There is no need for the scribes or the court attendants."
"As you wish, sire," Theron replied, straightening his back and clasping his hands in front of his apron. "How may my forge serve the throne today?"
Valex looked at the old man, his gaze unblinking. "I am here to audit the recent commissions of the palace. Specifically, the royal vow rings."
Theron blinked behind his thick lenses, his expression shifting into professional focus. "The vow rings, sire? The records for your lineage are preserved in the vaults, as they always have been."
"I am asking about the current year, Theron," Valex clarified, his tone dropping an octave, becoming dangerously still. "Has a replacement vow ring been requested or crafted for Lady Azure within the last month?"
The old ring maker frowned slightly, his brow furrowing in genuine, professional confusion. "A replacement, Your Highness? No. No such order has been logged. The royal vow rings are unique artifacts; they require ancestral silver and a drop of the bloodline’s energy to forge. I have not touched the royal mold since the day I prepared the rings for your formal union with Queen Odesse."
The name struck Valex like a blunt blade against his ribs, but he did not flinch. He kept his expression frozen. "And has Lady Azure, or any servant under her direct command, come to this forge to have her fingers measured for a new band due to a size discrepancy?"
"Never, sire," Theron said firmly, his voice steady with the absolute certainty of a master craftsman who knew every inch of his registry. "A queen’s ring is measured only once, before the high altar. I have received no requests, no servants, and no measurements from Lady Azure since your return to the capital. If a ring is missing from the palace, it has not been replaced by my hand."
Valex let out a slow, controlled breath through his nose. The final piece of Azure’s lie cracked cleanly in two. "Thank you, Theron. Your precision does credit to the court. You will speak of this visit to no one."
"My lips are sealed by my oath, Your Highness," Theron bowed deeply.
Valex pulled the hood back over his face, turning on his heel without another word. He stepped out into the cooling dusk, his heart hammering against his ribs. Azure had lied. The stolen ring, the royal maker’s delay—it was all a frantic fabric of deception.
Theron looked at Valex as he walked out and thought, "Azure? That name rings no bell to me."
...
As midnight blanketed the capital, the heavy cloying scent of floral perfume hung thick inside Azure’s locked chambers. She sat cross-legged in the center of the dark floor, her hair wild and her breathing shallow. The absolute humiliation she had suffered in the hallway, paired with Valex’s freezing interrogation, had driven her to the point of desperation.
Closing her eyes, she forced her consciousness down, abandoning the physical limitations of her body as she plunged into the dark, murky waters of the lower spirit realm.
The transition was violent. Azure found herself standing in a cold, suffocating expanse where the sky was the color of bruised iron. The air here felt like liquid lead, heavy and rancid with the smell of stagnant swamps. This was the domain of her dark craft, the hidden well where she kept the tether connected to Valex’s mind.
In the center of this grim space, a thick, pulsating cord of sickly green light stretched out into the distance, anchoring directly into a hazy, glowing projection of Valex’s subconscious.
"You will not take him from me," Azure hissed into the dead air, her voice echoing with a distorted, metallic rattle.
She stepped forward, her spectral hands glowing with a toxic, muddy green energy. She grabbed the pulsing tether, sinking her nails into it. She began to chant in a low, frantic murmur, pouring every ounce of her malice into the line. Her intent was brutal and absolute: she wasn’t just trying to keep him confused anymore—she wanted to bury his mind in a permanent, unyielding black fog, wiping out even the blurry dreams of the silver-haired stranger, turning him into a hollow, mindless puppet that would obey only her voice. The green light flared violently, surging down the line toward Valex’s sleeping mind like a spreading poison.
Miles away in another plane entirely, the atmosphere was completely reversed.
Odesse sat perfectly still on the stone floor of her private balcony, her hands resting open on her knees. The bright, unyielding light of the full moon poured down upon her, wrapping her in a brilliant, silver radiance. Breathing in the thin, crisp night air, she allowed her spirit to ascend, stepping smoothly into the high astral realm of the Moon Spirit.
Her spiritual world was a vast, breathtaking ocean of glass under a perpetual sky of liquid starlight. The air was cool and refreshing, carrying the scent of fertile earth and pine.
Suddenly, a sharp, icy tremor rippled through the glass floor beneath her feet. Odesse opened her eyes within the realm, her silver gaze instantly locking onto a dark, foul stain bleeding into the horizon. She could feel it immediately—the toxic, burning frequency of Azure’s dark magic, crawling like a parasitic vine toward Valex’s soul.
Odesse stood up, her long white gown flowing like starlight around her ankles. She could see the muddy green poison surging through the spiritual pathways, trying to crush the last remnants of the King’s independent will.
"No," Odesse whispered, her voice resonating through the celestial realm like a striking silver bell.
She knew she could not force his memories to return. The magic Azure had used was deep, and forcing open the locked doors of Valex’s mind by brute spiritual strength could shatter his sanity permanently. She had promised to use grace and protection, not destruction. She would not force him to remember her, but she would absolutely refuse to let Azure break him any further.
Odesse raised her hands toward the glowing crescent moon above her. A brilliant, blinding beam of pure, untouched silver light cascaded down, pooling into her palms. With a resolute expression, she thrust her hands forward, sending a massive, sweeping wave of silver starlight rushing across the spiritual void.
The silver light intercepted the muddy green poison just inches away from Valex’s subconscious boundary.
The collision was silent but cataclysmic. The silver energy did not attack; instead, it formed a massive, impenetrable, and glowing shield around Valex’s mind. It acted as an absolute buffer, absorbing the toxic, crushing pressure of Azure’s spell. Every time the green poison tried to dig deeper to worsen his state, the silver light neutralized the acidic magic, holding the line with unyielding, maternal protection.
Odesse stood firm, her jaw set, pouring her love, her loyalty, and her unbreakable mate bond into the shield. She held his mind in a perfect, safe stasis—shielded from the dark, protected from the fog, keeping him exactly where he was so he could find his own way back to the light.
Back in the physical world, inside the dark solar, Azure’s eyes snapped open. She gasped violently, tumbling sideways onto the hard floorboards as a brutal spiritual backlash tore through her chest. Blood trickled from her nose, and her hands shook so violently she could barely lift them. Her spell had been completely blocked by an invisible, solid wall of pure celestial energy.
Up in the Odesse quarters, She slowly lowered her hands, a calm, confident smile gracing her lips as she looked out at the fading moon. The line had been held. Her king was safe.
