Valex tilted his head, his brow furrowing deeply beneath his dark masquerade mask. He did not step back, but his entire posture turned incredibly rigid as he analyzed the stranger standing before him. He took in the way she effortlessly commanded the space, the breathtaking curve of her silhouette, and the way her silver hair caught the light of the crystal chandeliers, reflecting like starlight. Deep within his mind, Azure’s rehearsed story about a "previous wife" who had died long ago began to clash violently with reality. Looking at this woman, Valex felt a terrifyingly powerful familiarity that he had never once experienced with Azure.
He stared straight into her eyes behind the mask, his voice dropping into a quiet, intense rumble. "Your voice... it carries a weight it shouldn’t. Have we met before, Lady?"
The woman smiled confidently, a soft, knowing expression gracing her lips. She shifted her weight, curving her hip slightly as she replied softly, "Do you believe we have met before, Your Highness?"
Valex stared at her for a long, agonizing beat, the internal friction in his chest causing him to tighten his fist slightly. "I am here with my wife, so..."
"I do not see her anywhere around you," she interrupted smoothly, her lips pulling into a sharp grin. She placed her hands on her hips, her posture completely unbothered by his intimidating aura. "And anyways, this dance is for mere acquaintance only. Nothing more."
Valex looked down at her, his mind racing. Even without his memories, the sight of her silver hair and the melody of her voice reminded him instantly of the name Odesse. He stood paralyzed by the sheer impact of her presence.
She tilted her head, touching her chin with a delicate finger as a playful smirk tugged at her lips. "What is it you are thinking about, Your Highness? Are you considering my request?"
He did not answer her question right away, primarily because his body had already decided for him. Before his brain could process the decision, his left hand rose entirely on its own. His large fingers automatically locked perfectly with her smaller ones—a fluid, natural motion that his muscles remembered flawlessly from a thousand nights before. He stared down at their joined hands in absolute bewilderment, completely unnerved by his own sudden lack of control.
As the deep, melancholy music swelled across the ballroom, Valex pulled her gently into the center of the floor. The live orchestra seemed to fade into the background as they began to move, his voice dropping into a tense whisper. "I do not know your name, yet my body moves at your command. What sorcery is this?"
His large hand settled naturally on the curve of her waist, while her hand rested securely on his shoulder. They looked directly into each other’s eyes, dancing graciously and slowly to the rhythm of the sweeping melody. Amidst the crowd of other elite guests, she offered a soft smile. "If your body moves to my command, then what does that mean?"
Valex looked down at her, the cold, unnatural stillness in his eyes warming for the first time in a month. In response, she tightened her grip on his shoulder, curving her arm gracefully around his neck to pull herself closer. She glanced into his eyes, then looked down at his large hand holding her waist. Slowly, she released her right hand from his neck, reaching down to touch his fingers. She pulled his hand down from her waist, placing it firmly against her upper hip. Looking back up to lock eyes with him, she replaced her arm around his neck.
Valex’s breath caught in shock at her bold, deliberate touch.
"No need to be so stiff, Your Highness," she murmured, her words smooth and enchanting. "Be comfortable."
The effortless warmth of her touch sent a jolt straight to Valex’s heart, making it beat with an uncontrollable ferocity. The serene smile on her face, the way her eyes held his, and the intoxicating feeling of her closeness completely overwhelmed his senses. He looked at her deeply, a desperate thought echoing through his fractured mind "Who is this woman? My mind tells me to stop this dance, but my heart... my heart wants her to touch me more."
Yielding completely to the instinct, Valex pulled her body flush against his, his grip tightening protectively at the curve of her hip. She responded by pulling him closer by his neck, their movements melting into perfect unison. They moved around the center of the floor with an effortless, regal grace, their powerful presence completely overpowering every other couple on the ballroom floor.
...
Meanwhile, across the hall, Azure remained at the silver-trimmed table with the two noblewomen. On the surface, her face was bright and she maintained an entertained expression as they spoke, but internally, her mind was a tempest of irritation.
"I cannot believe His Highness let me come over here with these low-rank queens," she thought to herself, shifting her weight slightly beneath her green gown. "I looked back at him, expecting him to stop me... but instead he just let me go. Ugh. I would never even look at these women if I were alone. Pretending to be humble is absolutely horrific."
Just then, the noblewoman with the long blonde hair let out a sharp gasp, her hand rising slightly to point toward the dance floor. "Isn’t that King Valex dancing with a lady?"
Azure’s eyes widened in sudden alarm. She turned her head instantly, her gaze cutting through the crowd until it locked onto Valex’s massive frame. "What is going on?" she thought frantically. "And who is that woman His Highness is dancing with?"
She analyzed the physical features of the stranger, her vision focusing on the long, cascading silver hair moving fluidly with the music. The color drained from Azure’s face. Her chest seized with absolute panic as her eyes widened. She whispered in a low, terrified breath, "...Odesse."
The shorter noblewoman turned to her, raising an eyebrow. "What was that you said, Lady Azure?"
Azure snapped out of her daze, forcing her expression into a rigid mask of composure. She turned to the woman, her voice tight. "It is nothing. I have to go."
Without waiting for a response, she turned on her heel and began walking rapidly through the crowd.
Standing a few paces away, Kael’s eyes had also widened in complete disbelief as he watched the center of the dance floor. His stoic demeanor shattered entirely. His gaze locked onto the silver-haired woman, and his lips parted as he whispered quietly to himself, "Odesse..."
Azure brushed past him in a frantic hurry, but Kael didn’t even realize she had walked by. His eyes were glued to the couple, his mind reeling as he repeated the name under his breath. "Odesse." 𝑓𝑟ℯ𝘦𝓌𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝑐ℴ𝓂
Behind them, the blonde noblewoman whispered to her companion, "Seems like King Valex has found another woman."
The shorter woman laughed softly, a glint of amusement behind her mask. "This is interesting."
Azure continued to force her way forward, her brow furrowed in a deep, angry frown. "Why is His Highness dancing with that woman?" she muttered to herself, her hands clenching into fists. "And who is she? That silver hair... there is no way it is Odesse. It’s impossible. She is dead."
Before Azure could reach the center of the floor, the slow, melancholy music came to an end. The orchestra silenced, and the dancers throughout the hall stopped in their tracks.
Valex felt his grip on the lady’s hip loosen as she gently pulled back from his chest. She looked up at him with a beautiful, lingering smile, her voice carrying a soft warmth. "You have really good moves, Your Highness. Hopefully, fate lets me see you again."
She offered a slow, graceful curtsy and began to walk away, blending into the sea of masked guests.
Valex’s heart plummeted at the sudden distance. He turned quickly to look after her, calling out, "What is your name?"
The woman paused, turning her head slightly over her shoulder. She offered a playful smirk, raising a single finger to her lips as she shook her head sideways. A knowing smile tugged at her lips before she turned back around, her white gown sweeping the floor as she walked away.
Valex reached his arm out, his lips parting to call for her again, when he felt a sudden, sharp touch on his back.
He turned his head slowly and found Azure standing behind him, her face tight with a forced grin that failed to hide her underlying agitation. "Your Highness," she said, her eyes scanning his face. "Who was that woman?"
Valex looked at Azure, his mind completely detached from her presence. "Even I want to know," he thought to himself. He turned his head back toward the woman, desperately searching the crowd for the silver-haired stranger, but she was entirely gone. A heavy, profound sadness settled over his features.
...
Kael, who had kept his eyes locked on the silver-haired lady the entire time, did not hesitate. The moment she broke away from the King, Kael moved through the crowd like a striking shadow. "That has to be Odesse," his mind roared. "Is she really the one?"
He followed her at a disciplined distance, his sharp eyes scanning through the moving bodies of the guests, refusing to lose sight of the white gown. The woman glided gracefully toward the grand staircase at the back of the hall, her steps quick and purposeful. Kael quickened his pace, following her up the marble steps. She pushed open a heavy oak door leading toward an outer corridor and walked out into the open air.
Kael reached the door a second later, pushing it open quietly as he stepped out onto the stone terrace. The cool night air rushed past him, carrying the faint scent of pine and stone. He stood at the threshold, his eyes scanning the long, dimly lit corridor for any sign of the silver-haired woman.
As he walked further down the path, the sound of quiet, muffled sobbing broke the stillness of the night.
Kael stopped. A few yards ahead, someone was sitting directly on the stone floor, her knees pulled tight to her chest with her back facing him. The long silver hair fell over her shoulders, and her body shook with the force of her weeping.
Kael took a slow, hesitant step forward. His heart hammered violently against his ribs as he closed the distance. He stopped just behind her, his voice dropping into a soft, uncharacteristically gentle whisper.
"Excuse me."
The lady paused, her breathing hitching as she slowly turned her head to face him. Her silver masquerade mask had been pulled down, completely exposing her face. Strands of silver hair clung to her damp skin, and fresh tears streamed down her flushed cheeks as she looked up at the Commander.
Kael’s eyes widened in absolute, paralyzed disbelief. The breath left his lungs completely as he stared down at the familiar, tear-stained face of the woman he had spent a month hunting for. His voice cracked with a rare, raw emotion as he breathed the words into the night air:
"Your Highness..."
