Kael watched the shadowed line of the overgrown path, his hand resting tightly on the pommel of his sword. The suffocating silence of the old, abandoned market district felt heavy, a stagnant weight pressing down on his chest. The King had been gone too long into the thick brush.
"His highness has yet to return," Kael said, turning his head slightly toward Lucien. "I shall look for him." 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝓮𝒘𝙚𝙗𝒏𝙤𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝒐𝙢
Lucien gave a solemn, tense nod, his fingers gripping the reins of his mount. But before Kael could take a single step toward the tangled briars, the brush rustled sharply. Heavy leather boots crunched against the damp earth.
Valex emerged from the dark canopy, his towering frame cutting through the dim evening light. But he was not alone. Walking closely beside him, her small hand wrapped securely around his muscular forearm, was Azure shrouded in a dark cloak.
Kael paused, his entire posture freezing as his instincts flared in immediate confusion. He squinted through the gloom, his voice dropping to a sharp whisper. "Who is that beside his highness?"
As the two figures walked closer, stepping out from the shadow of the trees and onto the packed dirt road, the hood of the woman’s cloak fell back. The pale moonlight caught the sharp, smooth angles of her face. Kael’s breath hitched, his eyes widening in sheer disbelief.
"Is that not the Queen’s teacher?"
Azure and Valex stepped directly into the clearing, their strides synchronized. A bright, uncharacteristic smile sat on Valex’s face—a stark, terrifying contrast to the hollowed, grief-stricken expression he had worn for the past seven days. He looked completely unworried, his jaw relaxed, his posture light as if the crushing weight of a missing wife had never existed. Azure walked beside him, a subtle, triumphant smirk playing on her lips.
Kael’s gaze dropped to their joined hands, his brain scrambling to make sense of the sight. His forehead twitched, a heavy vein throbbing at his temple as he looked up from their fingers to meet the King’s eyes.
"I have found the Queen, Kael," Valex said. The words were smooth, airy, and entirely devoid of the raspy desperation that had defined his voice all week.
Kael felt the ground beneath him turn unstable. He looked back at Lucien, whose face had gone completely pale, and then forced his eyes back to the King. "What are you saying, Your Highness? This... this is not the Queen. This is the Queen’s—"
"You have been speaking out of place, Kael," Valex cut him off, his brow instantly furrowing into a sharp, icy frown. The temperature in the narrow road seemed to plummet. "You did the exact same thing earlier today in my solar."
Beside him, Azure shifted her weight, bowing her head slightly. Her shoulders trembled as she pretended to shrink back in sadness, but beneath the shadow of her hair, her lips were pulled into a wider grin.
Valex’s gaze turned lethal, locking onto his primary commander with a pressure that made it hard to draw breath. "One more act of disrespect from you toward Her Highness, and trust me, I will not be light with you. Is that clear?"
Kael felt the oppressive weight of the King aura pushing down on his shoulders. Every protective instinct inside him screamed that something was fundamentally broken, but the absolute law of the pack bound his movements. He straightened his arms rigidly at his sides, bowing his head.
"Sir. Yes, Your Highness," Kael repeated slowly, his voice tight.
Valex shifted his gaze past Kael’s shoulder, his dark eyes locking onto the trembling second-in-command. "Is that clear, Lucien?"
Lucien shivered under the sudden scrutiny, his chest tightening as he lowered his eyes to the cobblestones. "Sir. Yes, Your Highness."
The moment the submission was given, the suffocating pressure vanished. Valex’s face cleared instantly, a bright, manic smile returning to his features. He let out a short, breathy laugh that sounded completely unnatural coming from his chest. "Now, wipe your sadness away. My wife has been found, and I am more than happy."
Without another word, Valex turned to Azure, pulling her tightly against his chest. He caught her by the waist, his massive hands lifting her completely off the ground, and twirled her around in a joyous circle under the dim sky.
Azure let out a soft, melodic laugh, wrapping her arms around his neck. As her face rested against the leather of his shoulder, her eyes flicked toward the empty space of the forest, her thoughts dark and venomous. "You see this, Odesse? He doesn’t even remember you existed anymore. He is officially mine now, and he is so in love with me."
Kael watched the display, his mind racking with absolute horror. "For seven days, the King had been tearing the pack lands apart, descending into a terrifying madness to find Odesse. He had wept into her pillows. He had refused to sleep. And now, he is spinning another woman in his arms, calling her his wife. What has she done to him?" Kael thought, his fists clenching so hard his knuckles turned white.
From a few steps behind, Lucien spoke in a low, miserable tone, his voice barely a breath against the wind, hoping the darkness would swallow his words. "But... this is not Queen Odesse. Or did his highness never love her?"
The words had barely left his lips when Valex froze. He set Azure down slowly, his head snapping toward Lucien with a vicious, unblinking glare.
"Odesse?" Valex asked, the name lifting from his throat like a foreign word he couldn’t quite shape.
Suddenly, Valex’s posture stiffened. His left eye twitched violently, and for a terrifying fraction of a second, the dark, shimmering green color of his iris glitched, bleeding away as his natural royal amber tried to force its way back to the surface as he looked at Kael. "Who is Odesse? Was she... was she among my ex-wives?"
Azure’s eyes widened in sudden panic. She reached out quickly, her fingers wrapping softly around his forearm, her nails digging slightly into the fabric to anchor him. "My king," she said, her voice dripping with a practiced, soothing sweetness as she stepped into his line of sight, blocking his view of the guards. "You should rest. You must be so tired after all these days. Let us return to the palace."
Valex blinked, his movements slowing down heavily. The green color in his eyes stabilized once more, completely drowning out the amber. He looked down at her lazily, his expressions turning slack and unfocused, resembling a man heavy with drink. "Yes... but you will tell me why you ran away."
Azure smiled sheepishly, her eyes crinkling with false innocence. "I know, and I will."
They began walking toward the waiting horses, Azure guiding him by the arm. As they passed Kael, she shifted her gaze, a cold, mocking smirk stretching across her face as she deliberately winked at the commander. When her eyes fell upon Lucien, the playful look vanished, replaced by a hard, warning glare that made the second-in-command stiffen.
Valex mounted his black warhorse heavily, and Azure climbed up behind him, wrapping her slender arms securely around his waist.
Before turning the reins, Valex looked down at the two men standing in the dirt. "Return all soldiers back to the pack and the palace. The search has ended."
He didn’t wait for Kael to acknowledge the order. With a sharp flick of his wrists, he turned the horse and started at a brisk trot back toward the main roads of the town.
Lucien walked over to Kael’s side, his eyes wide as he stared down the empty road. "Captain... what has just happened?"
Kael couldn’t look at him. His head remained bowed, his gaze fixed on the heavy hoofprints left in the damp earth. The reality of what he had just witnessed was too massive, too terrifying to speak aloud. "That woman," Kael said quietly, his voice dangerously low. "She... she has done something to the Queen, and she has taken over the heart of his highness."
He raised his head, looking toward the dark outline of the palace towers in the distance. "This... this does not smell good, Lucien. Whatever it is, it smells rotten and choking."
"So..." Lucien hesitated, shifting his weight. "Should I tell all the soldiers to stop the search?"
Kael didn’t answer immediately. His mind was consumed by a single image—Odesse’s soft smile, her protective hand over her pregnant belly, and the desperate love the King had possessed for her only twenty-four hours ago. "Odesse, where are you?" he thought bitterly. "His highness truly needs you right now."
Turning back to Lucien, Kael’s expression hardened into something sharp and decisive. "Tell the soldiers within our borders to return to the pack. I shall send a formal letter to the Alphas of the nearby packs, telling them that the King has found the Queen and their scouts can stand down. But... we shall send spies into those kingdoms secretly."
Lucien blinked in surprise. "Spies?"
"Yes, spies," Kael nodded firmly.
"I... I do not think I will be able to act as a spy, Captain," Lucien said quickly, his hands waving slightly in nervous agitation. "You see, my wife... she is due to give birth any day now, and if I am caught crossing boundaries—"
"I never said I would send you," Kael cut him off, rolling his eyes with a heavy sigh. He turned toward his horse, muttering under his breath, "I do not know why his highness made you second-in-command after me."
Lucien offered a small, sheepish smile, rubbing the back of his neck. "Well, you have the strength, Captain, and I have the brains."
Kael swung himself up into his saddle, his face entirely plain. "At least that is one good thing your child will inherit from you." He gathered the reins, looking down at Lucien one last time. "I shall return to the palace to monitor the situation. You go to the assigned districts and tell the men the official search is cancelled."
Lucien mounted his own horse, nodding.
"The search is still on," Kael added, his voice dropping so the wind barely carried it. "But his highness does not have to know."
With a sharp kick, Kael turned his mount and rode hard toward the palace, the heavy thud of his horse’s hooves echoing loudly through the empty streets as Lucien set off in the opposite direction.
