The night of that very day, the palace was exceptionally quiet and dull. Standing outside the heavy oak door of the royal bedchamber was Azure, wrapped in a thick, luxurious night coat. She held the fabric tightly against her frame, a bright, calculating smile settling onto her features. "Tonight," she thought to herself, "his highness and I will surely mate. And when we do, I shall carry his heir." With that final, triumphant thought, she gripped the polished brass handle and pushed the door open slowly, slipping inside without a sound.
Valex was seated on his velvet couch, his reading glasses balanced precisely on the bridge of his nose as his eyes scanned the pages of a large book. Azure walked closer, her deliberate steps entirely silent against the thick rugs. Releasing her grip on the night coat, she let the heavy garment drop to the floor, waiting for his gaze to snap to her. But he did not look up.
A shadow of confusion crossed her face. "What is this?" she wondered, her smile faltering as she glanced back toward the door and then back to him. "Did he truly not hear me come in?" She stood frozen, staring at him while he remained completely absorbed in his reading. Azure scrunched her forehead in fleeting irritation, but immediately smoothed her expression into a warm, shy smile. She adjusted her posture, mimicking the innocent demeanor of a young bride on her wedding night.
"Your Highness," she murmured softly.
Valex looked up slowly. The moment his eyes cleared the page, a soft smile touched his lips, and he removed his glasses. "My Queen," he said, setting the book down on the small table beside him. "Why are you standing all the way over there?"
Azure pouted slightly, crossing her arms to play the part. "I have been standing here for some time now, but you did not even notice me."
Valex rubbed his temples, a flicker of genuine exhaustion washing over his face. "I really am sorry," he said, standing up smoothly and closing the distance between them. He stopped right in front of her, holding her arm with a gentle touch as he looked down into her eyes. "I am sorry. I have been very distracted lately, but I assure you, it won’t happen again."
Azure’s confidence returned, her eyes bright. "Are you sure?"
"Yes, I am," he replied warmly. He leaned down, placing a slow, gentle kiss upon her forehead. But as he pulled back, his hands slipped from her arms, and he turned away, walking directly toward the large grand bed.
Azure stood rooted to the spot, her mind blank with sudden bewilderment. "Where is he going?" Her calculations were slipping. Unable to hide her impatience, she spoke aloud. "What are you doing, Your Highness?"
Valex sat down on the edge of the mattress, looking back at her with heavy lids. "Sleeping. My eyes are incredibly heavy tonight, and my body feels like lead. Do you not think it is best that I rest?"
Azure forced the tightest smile onto her face, her chest burning with frustration. "Yes... yes, of course you should rest," she said, though her eyes rolled slightly as she turned her head away. "You absolutely need it."
Noticing her shift, Valex offered a faint, tired smile and patted the space beside him. "Why don’t we warm each other? Come lie with me. Would you like that?"
The irritation vanished from Azure’s face, replaced by a genuine surge of satisfaction. "Yes, I would, Your Highness."
She walked quickly to the bed, climbing onto the mattress and sliding under the heavy royal blankets beside him. Valex wrapped his large arms around her, pulling her close until her face was buried securely against his chest. Wrapped in his heat, Azure listened to the steady rhythm of his heart, her confidence solidifying once more. "This is nice," she thought, her eyes closing as a serene warmth overtook her. "Why should I rush things? He will be with me forever now. I can simply enjoy this."
But Valex, holding her tight in the dark, lay with his features taut and rigid. The heavy blanket did nothing to ease the cold knot of guilt tightening in his stomach. "I feel completely hollow," he thought, staring blankly into the shadows of the canopy. "Azure is the perfect wife. She is completely devoted to me, she loves me entirely, and yet... I cannot stop this madness. Why am I still hunting for a ghost? Why am I trying to remember a woman who is dead?"
He tightened his grip around Azure, forcing his lips against the top of her head in a desperate bid to anchor his fractured mind. He vowed to do better, to force the unwanted thoughts away, as the silent night passed slowly over the compromised kingdom.
...
The night of the Royal Masquerade Ball arrived, completely transforming the grand fortress of the Bloodfang Pack into a vibrant, swirling sea of mystery, heavy silk, and whispered diplomacy. The massive ballroom was bathed in the warm, flickering glow of hundreds of crystal chandeliers, their light reflecting flawlessly off the highly polished marble floors. Dozens of elite couples were already executing intricate, traditional ball dances, moving in perfect synchronization to the rich, sweeping melodies of a live orchestra.
Through the heavy arched entrance, the guests slipped in like elegant ghosts, their true identities completely shielded behind elaborate, jewel-encrusted masks that guarded the secrets of their lineages.
Valex walked smoothly into the crowded hall, his imposing, massive frame instantly drawing the eyes of the room even without his title being announced. He wore a sharp, custom midnight-black tunic embroidered with subtle, shimmering silver threading along the collar and cuffs. His face was entirely concealed behind a dark, regal masquerade mask that hid his features, leaving only his sharp, calculating eyes exposed to scan the crowd.
Azure glided gracefully by his side, her arm securely looped through his. She wore a stunning, emerald-green gown that caught the candlelight with every movement, the shade precisely chosen to match the false, magical green hue that now dominated Valex’s eyes. Her face was hidden behind a delicate, feathered mask that accentuated her sharp cheekbones, a triumphant, serene smile resting permanently on her lips as she surveyed the high-society gathering.
Walking exactly two paces behind the royal couple was Kael. He moved like a striking, silent shadow, clad in his polished black leather armor rather than formal robes, a simple, unadorned dark mask covering the upper half of his face. His right hand rested naturally on the golden pommel of his sword, his sharp eyes constantly mapping the perimeter, identifying the exits, and calculating the movements of the shifting crowd.
Valex guided Azure toward the edge of the ballroom floor, steering her clear of the main spinning dancers toward a section where several masked alphas and their partners were mingling near the high arched windows.
"The turnout is exactly as Sylas predicted," Valex murmured, his deep voice carrying a perfectly calm, polite tone as his eyes flicked over the foreign nobility. "Nearly every royal family in the alliance is present tonight."
"It is a beautiful evening, your Highness," Azure replied softly, her voice dripping with sweet, unbothered satisfaction as she leaned her head slightly closer to his broad shoulder. "A perfect night to show the world the absolute strength and unity of our pack."
Before Valex could respond, King Sylas appeared through the crowd. He wore an ornate golden mask, though the intricate carvings did little to hide the recognizable, heavily scarred jawline underneath. He smiled warmly, raising a crystal glass toward Valex in a silent toast of welcome, before gesturing for them to join his private circle near the center of the hall. Valex inclined his head in a respectful nod and began to walk forward with Azure, stopping near a long drinking table where the server poured fresh wine.
Azure looked around, the subtle glamour built into her purple eyes reflecting the sparkling chandeliers. "I cannot believe I am attending a royal gathering as a true queen," she thought, squeezing her eyes briefly in a surge of private excitement. "You see this, Odesse? Even if these people look at me with questions in their minds, they won’t dare come close to me. Not only am I the queen now, but I am the queen of one of the most feared Alpha in the territory." A sharp, mocking smirk played on her lips.
King Sylas approached them fully, accompanied by a woman with short, brown wavy hair that bounced slightly with her steps. She possessed a thick, distinctly curvy figure that was accented by a structured, ruby-red velvet gown tailored short to her knees, and her eyes were masked by a matching velvet half-mask encrusted with dark pearls.
"Welcome, Valex," Sylas said, clapping a hand near the King’s shoulder. "I really appreciate you making the journey."
Valex smiled politely, his composure flawless. "Of course I would come, Sylas."
Sylas turned his attention to Azure, inclining his head. "Lady Azure, this is my wife, Queen Zyra."
Azure smiled warmly, extending her hand with practiced elegance. "It is an absolute honor to meet you, Queen Zyra."
Zyra hesitated for a fraction of a second, her posture stiffening slightly beneath her ruby gown, but she recovered quickly, extending her hand to briefly brush Azure’s fingers. "Nice to meet you too, Lady Azure," she said, her tone polite but reserved.
Azure noticed the hesitation immediately, her smile turning into a sharp, knowing smirk as she pulled her hand back.
"Please, enjoy the ball," Sylas added, sensing the brief, quiet shift in the air.
"Thank you, we shall," Valex responded smoothly.
As King Sylas and Lady Zyra turned to greet other newly arrived guests, Azure kept her eyes locked on Zyra’s retreating form. "Idiots," she thought with a silent scoff. "I bet every single one of them will spend the night gossiping about me behind their masks."
Her prediction was accurate. At a nearby table adorned with silver trimmings, two noblewomen stood watching Azure’s every move. One, possessing long blonde hair that fell in cascades over her silk dress, leaned closer to her companion. "Is that truly King Valex’s wife now?" she whispered.
The second woman, who was noticeably shorter but wore a highly elaborate mask, sniffed subtly. "I do not care what happened between his highness and his former wife, honestly. We need to make sure we are friends with this one."
The blonde woman frowned. "Why should we trouble ourselves?"
"Do you not see the opportunity?" the shorter woman replied, her voice dropping to a bare murmur. "Our husbands’ trade routes could benefit immensely from this. If we become close friends with the wife of a powerful Alpha King, we could easily secure a permanent alliance. Think of the influence."
The blonde woman’s eyes widened behind her mask. "Oh my goodness... you are entirely correct."
"Come on," the shorter woman smiled, smoothing her skirts. "Let us go make our introductions."
The two women glided across the polished floor, stopping directly in front of Azure. The shorter one bowed her head with a flattering smile. "Lady Azure, you are looking exceptionally beautiful tonight. Truly, the green suits you beautifully."
Azure looked behind herself briefly to ensure they weren’t speaking to someone else, and then turned back to them, her confidence flaring. "Are you speaking to me?"
Both women nodded in unison. Azure’s expression instantly melted into a radiant, gracious smile. "Oh, thank you very much. You are both incredibly kind."
Valex looked down at the two women closely, his sharp eyes analyzing their intentions. As the women caught his terrifyingly intense gaze, their shoulders shivered slightly under the weight of his presence, and they bowed lower. "Greetings, Your Highness," they stammered out together.
Azure glanced at Valex’s stoic face and then back to her new admirers. The blonde woman took a step forward, her voice eager. "We would be deeply honored to have you join our table, Lady Azure. We would love nothing more than to make your acquaintance properly."
Azure smiled brightly, turning to Valex for permission. Valex hesitated for a brief moment, his analytical mind seeing no harm in her building connections with the lesser noble houses. He gave a slight, permissive nod.
"That would be wonderful," Azure said, turning back to the women. She walked proudly in front of them, her emerald gown sweeping the floor as they led the way toward the outer tables.
As they walked, the blonde woman leaned an inch closer to the shorter one, her whisper barely audible over the music. "Come to think of it, did anyone actually hear of a formal wedding ceremony between the two of them?"
The shorter woman shushed her instantly, pinching her arm. "Keep your mouth shut if you want to keep your head," she hissed as they continued forward.
Valex watched them go, then turned his gaze slightly to the left. "Kael," he commanded quietly. "Stay with her. Keep her safe."
"Right away, Your Highness," Kael responded with a slow, disciplined nod. He turned and followed the women at a respectable distance, his hand never leaving his weapon.
Left alone near the grand pillars, Valex watched a butler pass by holding a silver tray laden with crystal cups. He extended his hand, collecting a dark, spiced drink. He took a slow sip, his eyes drifting over the massive ballroom as he fell deep into his own thoughts, the noise of the crowd fading into a dull buzz in his ears.
Slowly, the lively rhythm of the orchestra began to shift, the upbeat tempo dissolving into a deep, sweeping, and melancholy melody meant for a slow couple’s dance.
Suddenly, Valex felt a light, deliberate tap on his right shoulder from behind.
He turned his head slowly, expecting a foreign lord seeking favors. Instead, his breath caught in his throat. Standing directly behind him was a woman with exceptionally long, striking silver hair that cascaded beautifully down her back. She wore a pristine, pure white gown that was snatched tightly to her distinctly curvy body, accentuating every line of her silhouette with breathtaking elegance. Her face was hidden behind an enchanting, intricately carved silver mask that shimmered like starlight under the crystal chandeliers.
Valex looked down at her, his heart violently hammering against his ribs as a strange, overwhelming surge of heat flooded his chest.
The woman looked up at him through the silver mask, a soft, familiar smile gracing her lips. "May I have this dance, my King?" she asked, her voice like a forgotten melody slicing directly through his soul.
