The Lunar Rotunda was a marvel of wolf aristocracy, a circular hall of polished black stone so reflective it resembled standing on the surface of a dark lake. Thousands of humans filled the lower pews, their faces turned upward in a quiet, collective hum of reverence. They were not there out of obligation; they gathered to witness the heart of the kingdom beat for the first time in a long while.
At the altar, Valex stood like a pillar of obsidian against the sun-drenched marble. To his subjects, he was a force of nature, a ruler whose singular focus kept the borders safe and the laws ironclad. But as the trumpets signaled the Odesse’s arrival, that iron began to crack.
He didn’t just turn; he leaned toward her, his eyes, those striking molten gold unique to his bloodline, igniting with a warmth he reserved only for her.
She approached down the aisle not as a porcelain doll, but as a sovereign. Her gown was a masterpiece of cream and gold, but it was her eyes that captivated the room. They were fixed on Valex with a desperate, radiant intensity that made the surrounding pomp and circumstance fade into a blur. When he reached out to take her hand, the contact sent a visible ripple of calm through the noble wolves in the front rows. It wasn’t just a marriage; it was the convergence of two halves of a storm, and for the first time in years, the kingdom felt at peace.
The music tapered off, replaced by a silence so profound that it felt as though the stones of the cathedral themselves were listening. Kael, being the Commander of the Royal Guard, stepped forward, carrying a heavy ancestral broadsword held horizontally across his palms.
Resting on the flat of the steel, near the crossguard, was a band of heavy platinum. At its center sat a wolf’s head emblem, carved from a stone that seemed to glow with a rhythmic inner light.
Valex reached out, his fingers steady as he took the ring from the blade. The symbolism was clear to every human and wolf in attendance: Peace is maintained by the strength of the crown.
He took Odesse’s hand, not with the delicate touch of a stranger, but with the firm, possessive warmth of a man who had finally found his anchor. As he slid the ring onto her finger, he didn’t look at the crowd; he looked only at her.
"I am the shield for your heart and the blade at your side. My strength is your strength, and my pack is your pack. Until the stars fall and the earth goes cold, I am yours," he declared, his voice a low vibration that seemed to make the very air hum. Odesse blushed and her eyes glistered. Valex leaned closer and kissed her slowly. The kiss wasn’t a brief, formal press of lips, but a release of the desperate tension they’d both held since the ceremony began—a deep, grounding moment that signaled the true start of their reign.
As they pulled away, Valex raised their joined hands. That was the signal.
From the front pews, the noble wolves rose as one. They threw their heads back, their voices rising in a harmonized, melodic howl that shook the glass in the window frames. It was not a wild sound; it was a song of triumph and loyalty. Outside, the humans began to cheer, their voices echoing the wolves’ call.
...
The Great Hall was alive with activity. Golden wine flowed into crystal goblets, and the laughter of the noble houses mingled with the festive roar of the citizens in the courtyard below. But atop the marble dais, seated on the twin thrones of the monarchy, the world had shrunk down to just two people. Valex leaned in, his shoulder brushing against Odesse. He ignored the plate of roasted pheasant in front of him, his amber eyes locked on her profile.
"You realize," he murmured, his voice dropping to a low, private gravel that didn’t carry past their table, "that I haven’t heard a single word of the High Elder’s speech? I was too busy trying to remember how to breathe while looking at you."
Odesse let out a soft giggle, a light, melodic sound that contrasted sharply with the formal music playing in the hall. She felt heat rise in her neck, a bright blush coloring her cheeks.
"You’re supposed to be the stoic king," she whispered back, ducking her head slightly. "Everyone is watching us, you know." 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮
"Let them watch," he said, his hand finding hers under the heavy silk of the tablecloth. His thumb traced circles over the new platinum ring on her finger. "You look breathtaking. That silver thread in your dress is supposed to be the highlight, but it’s dull compared to you. I’m the luckiest man in this kingdom, and it isn’t because of the crown."
She turned to face him fully, her eyes shimmering with a mix of mischief and deep affection. "Is that so? The great King Alpha, reduced to a poet because of a dress?"
"Because of the woman in it," he corrected firmly. "You’re finally mine. Truly, officially mine. I don’t think I’ve felt this kind of peace since I took the throne."
Odesse’s blush deepened, and she squeezed his hand tightly. "I was so nervous this morning. I thought my knees would give out halfway down the aisle. But then I saw you standing there, looking like you were ready to fight the whole world just to reach me, and I forgot about everyone else." She leaned closer, her breath warm against his ear. "I’m happy too. So happy that it actually hurts a little bit."
He smiled—a genuine, lopsided grin that his subjects rarely saw—and brought her hand to his lips, kissing her knuckles without breaking eye contact.
"Good," he said softly. "Get used to it. I plan on making you feel this way every single day for the rest of our lives."
The music changed, the heavy drums of the feast fading into the sweeping, rhythmic sounds of string instruments. Valex stood up, extending his hand to his Queen. As they moved to the center of the marble floor, the transition was jarring for the humans watching; one moment, they were a giggling couple, and the next, they embodied the apex of power.
They moved with a predatory grace, their bodies perfectly synchronized, as if they were following the same heartbeat. Every turn was sharp, every glide across the floor effortless. It resembled a choreographed hunt, a display of power and speed—yet Valex’s hands held her waist with a terrifying tenderness. The hall fell silent, guests pausing with forks halfway to their mouths, mesmerized by the sheer magnetism of the pair. For the wolves, it was a demonstration of a perfect match; for the humans, it was a beautiful, humbling reminder of why these two ruled.
As the dance came to an end and they returned to the dais, Kael stood, his voice carrying the weight of a man who had fought in a hundred battles. He raised a heavy golden chalice and began, "To the King," his eyes flicking to his sovereign with steadfast loyalty. "We have followed your strength into every dark corner of this realm. But tonight, we celebrate the light."
He then turned his gaze to the Queen. "A King’s power can hold a border, but a Queen’s heart gives the pack a reason to defend it. To our new Queen—the soul of our Kingdom and the anchor for our King."
"To the Queen!" the room thundered back, the sound vibrating through the floorboards.
...
The celebration continued late into the night, but eventually, Valex caught Odesse’s eye. With a subtle nod to Kael, they began their exit. As they walked through the corridors of the palace, the cheers of the crowds faded into a soft, distant hum until the heavy oak doors of the Royal Suite swung shut behind them, cutting off the outside world.
The silence was immediate and palpable.
Valex exhaled a long, ragged breath, the rigid posture of the "Alpha" finally easing from his shoulders. He reached up, unpinning the heavy, jewel-encrusted mantle from his chest and tossing it onto a chair. Then, he stepped behind her. His fingers, calloused and strong, worked at the delicate fastenings of her crown. When the gold was finally removed, he placed it on the vanity with a dull clink.
He didn’t move away. Instead, he wrapped his arms around her waist from behind, burying his face in the crook of her neck and inhaling deeply.
"Finally," he rasped, his voice no longer that of a ruler, but of a man who was simply home.
Odesse leaned back against his chest, her hands resting over his. "No more speeches? No more bowing?"
"No more anyone," he murmured, his grip tightening just slightly—not out of command, but from a desperate need to be close to her. "The King is off duty. Right now, I’m just yours."
She turned in his arms, looking up at him without the filters of royalty or the expectations of the pack. The "predator" was still there in the depths of his amber eyes, but it was a beast tamed by the woman standing in front of him. He leaned down, resting his forehead against hers as they stood in the quiet of their room.
He pulled her in as if she were the only thing keeping him grounded, his hands sliding into her hair to tilt her face up. Odesse met him with equal, ravenous intensity, her fingers clutching the fabric of his shirt to pull him closer. The kiss was messy and breathless, a frantic release of everything they had suppressed throughout the day. They clung to one another, their hearts racing in a synchronized, desperate rhythm, finally erasing the distance between them until all that remained was the heat of their breath and the overwhelming relief of being alone together.
