The heavy iron gates of the royal palace groaned as they were pulled open, the sound echoing through the courtyard as Valex rode inside. The perimeter guards immediately straightened, bowing their heads in unison, though their eyes instinctively darted to the figure riding behind the King. Azure kept her face buried against Valex’s back, her hands tight around his waist.
As the horse came to a halt in the center of the stone courtyard, the servants and kitchen staff began pouring out from the lower levels, their faces bright with a sudden, desperate hope. Rumors had traveled faster than the horses; everyone believed the King had finally brought Queen Odesse home.
Deep within the servant quarters, Cara had been sitting silently in a wooden chair, her hands raw from twisting her apron. The door burst open, and two younger servant girls rushed past, their voices loud with excitement.
"His highness has brought the Queen back to the palace!" one girl cried, clutching her hands to her chest.
"Are you sure?" the second asked, her boots clicking as she moved toward the hall.
"Yes, I am! Let us go see!"
Cara stood up so fast the wooden chair scraped loudly against the stone floor. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a wild, breathless hope bursting through the exhaustion of the past week. Odesse. She ran past the girls, her skirts bunched in her fists as she sprinted through the lower corridors and burst out into the bright light of the courtyard.
Valex was still mounted, a servant holding the reins of his horse. Cara’s eyes locked onto the woman sitting behind him. From a distance, the dark cloak looked familiar, and a massive smile broke across Cara’s face, tears of relief pricking the corners of her eyes. She took three eager steps forward, desperate to welcome her best friend home.
Then, the woman shifted.
As Azure reached down to steady herself, her slender, tan arm slid out from the folds of the cloak. Cara’s smile froze. Her eyes twitched. That was not Odesse’s frame.
Azure slid down from the horse smoothly, turning to face the crowd as Valex dismounted beside her.
The courtyard fell into an instant, suffocating silence. The smiles died on the servants’ faces. A low, frantic murmuring broke out along the stone walls like a wave of dry leaves.
"That is not the Queen," a female cook whispered, stepping back.
"Is that not the Queen’s teacher?" a perimeter guard muttered to the man beside him, his brow furrowing in confusion.
"Is the King replacing the Queen already?" another maid whispered, her eyes wide with horror.
"What is going on here?" a male servant asked, looking around for the Guard Captain.
Near the back, an older servant shook her head firmly. "No... I am very sure this is a misunderstanding. It must be."
Cara stood completely frozen near the stone pillars, the air trapped in her lungs. The world around her seemed to blur. "Why is she here?" she thought, her hands trembling violently at her sides. She stared past Valex toward the open palace gates, her mind screaming. "Where is Odesse? Why is this lady holding his highness’s arm? What is happening?"
Valex stepped forward, his hand sliding down to clasp Azure’s fingers tightly. He looked around at the gathered crowd, his face split into a wide, cheerful grin that didn’t reach his eyes. "My wife has returned, everyone. The search is over."
Absolute quiet followed his declaration. Not a single cheer arose. The servants and guards simply stared at their King in deep, paralyzed shock.
Valex’s grin faltered slightly, his dark brows drawing together as his voice dropped into an authoritative rumble. "Why is there quiet? This is a joyous thing."
In the dead silence, a small, clear voice echoed from the edge of the domestic line. "But this is not Queen Odesse. Queen Odesse is your wife. Where is she?"
The crowd instantly parted, every eye locking onto a young kitchen boy who stood near the laundry baskets. An older woman beside him gasped, her face draining of color as she reached down, dragging the boy back by his shoulder and slamming her hand firmly over his mouth. "Why did you say that, you foolish child..." she hissed in terror.
Valex’s eyebrows raised, his jaw tightening as he stared at the boy. "Who is this Odesse? This is the second time I have heard this name."
The child struggled violently against the old woman’s grip, pulling her fingers away from his lips just long enough to shout, "She’s your wife! Our Queen!"
Valex stood perfectly still. He scoffed, his head tilting as he looked down at his own boots. "My wife... I have never heard of a woman named Odesse." He repeated the name under his breath, his voice flat.
Suddenly, his posture stiffened again. The dark green in his eyes began to flicker rapidly, a violent twitch taking over his left eyelid as his inner wolf fought against the heavy, unnatural fog clouding his mind.
Cara watched the twitching of his eyes from the shadows of the pillars, her hands covering her mouth. "How does his highness not remember her? she thought in complete horror. What has this lady done to him?"
Before the King’s eyes could clear, Azure moved. She stepped directly into his space, laughing softly as she stroked his arm with a practiced ease. Valex blinked heavily, his head snapping down to look at her as the green color in his irises locked back into place, dulling his expression once more.
"Oh, Your Highness," Azure said loudly, turning her head so her voice carried clearly across the silent courtyard. "Odesse was your old wife. Unfortunately, she died after mating you. Remember?"
Valex pressed a heavy hand to his forehead, his breathing shallow as he let out a slow nod. "Oh... yes. I could not remember her name."
Azure turned her gaze back to the crowd, her eyes cold and warning beneath her sweet smile. "These people have simply not moved on from her, my king. They must still miss her deeply."
Valex looked over at the little boy, who was still muffled and struggling beneath the old woman’s tight grip. Azure reached up, gently touching the side of Valex’s face to draw his attention away. "Let us go inside, Your Highness."
Valex nodded lazily, his movements heavy as he allowed her to guide him toward the grand stone threshold of the palace.
The crowd of servants and guards watched them walk away in absolute, terrified silence. The moment the heavy oak doors shut behind the pair, the courtyard erupted into a frenzy of hushed, panicked gossip.
The old woman dragged the little boy toward the rear entrance, pulling him sharply by the ear as he groaned in pain. "Why would you say that?!" she scolded fiercely. "Do you want to get into trouble? Do you want to lose your head?!"
"But that is not Queen Odesse!" the boy cried out, tears streaming down his dusty cheeks. "She... she is an imposter, Grandma!"
"Shut up!" the old woman snapped, pushing him through the wooden doors of the servant quarters to hide him from view.
The rest of the staff began to disperse, their whispers filling the air like a plague. Cara remained standing by the stone pillar, her body completely rigid, unable to move a single muscle as the world crumbled around her.
The heavy iron gates groaned again, and the sound of galloping hooves echoed through the stone archway. Kael rode into the courtyard, his horse breathing heavily, its coat slick with sweat. He pulled on the reins, bringing the animal to a halt, and his sharp eyes immediately scanned the chaotic, whispering crowd before locking onto Cara’s frozen figure.
He dismounted slowly, handing the reins to a waiting groomsman without looking at him. His heavy boots clicked against the stone as he walked directly toward the palace landing.
Cara watched him approach, her vision blurring as fresh, hot tears finally broke free, spilling down her pale cheeks.
Kael reached the base of the steps, his face set into its usual stoic, unreadable expression. He paused for a fraction of a second, noticing her tears, before starting to walk past her. "Has his highness gone inside?" he asked quietly.
Cara nodded slowly. But as his shoulder brushed past hers, the sheer weight of her terror broke through her restraint. "What is going on?" she choked out, her voice cracking with raw agony.
Kael stopped on the first step, turning back to face her.
"Why is his highness calling the Queen’s teacher his wife?" Cara asked, her shoulders shaking as she wiped her face with the back of her hand, though more tears immediately followed. "Why isn’t Odesse here? Where is she? Why is that lady holding his highness’s arm... why is he no longer searching for her?" Her voice rose, thick with panic. "Why can’t he remember her?!"
Kael stood on the stone step, his mouth opening slightly, but no words came out. For the first time since she had known him, the primary commander looked entirely helpless. His dark eyes fixed on her face, unable to offer an answer to the madness tearing their pack apart.
Cara took two slow, trembling steps toward him. She reached out, her fingers twisting tightly into the thick fabric of his uniform shirt, using him to keep her legs from collapsing beneath her. She looked up into his face, her eyes wide, desperate, and swimming with grief. "Is she coming back, Kael? Or... or is she dead?"
Kael looked straight ahead past her shoulder, his jaw tightening into a hard, rigid line. The silence between them grew heavy. "I do not know for myself," he said, his voice flat and stiff. "Because..."
Before he could finish his sentence, Cara lost the remaining strength in her knees. With a quiet, broken sob, she let herself fall forward, burying her face completely against the hard leather of his chest armor. Her hands remained clenched in his shirt, her whole body trembling as she wept into his chest.
Kael’s eyes widened slightly, his arms freezing at his sides. His stoic posture didn’t waver, but his shoulders turned uncomfortably rigid, an awkward, tense energy settling over him. He was a warrior, built for battle and cold strategy; he had never dealt with the raw, weeping grief of a maid. He felt entirely uncomfortable, his hands hovering in the air, unsure of where to go.
But as her quiet sobs continued to shake his frame, he realized the depth of the terror she was holding alone. He lowered his arms slowly, not wrapping them around her, but letting his chest act as a steady, unyielding shield against her panic.
"I am very sure Her Highness will return," Kael said down to her, his voice rough but dropping its usual harsh edge. He didn’t smile, his features remaining tight, but the icy distance in his face softened just a fraction. "She does not give up easily."
Cara slowly stopped weeping, her breathing hitching as she calmed down against his chest. She pulled her face back slightly, looking up at him. Kael looked down at her, his expression steady, plain, and entirely focused on the duty ahead.
Cara stared at his face, her mind suddenly logging the proximity between them. The realization hit her all at once, and the pale, tear-stained skin of her cheeks rapidly flushed into a bright, burning crimson red. She quickly let go of his shirt, stepping back a full pace as she lowered her eyes to her shoes.
