The night was quiet and clear, the cool wind moving freely across the open territory as the stars illuminated the stone walls of the Moonlight Palace. High above, the moon shone with a brilliant, untamed light, casting long shadows across the heavy iron gates of the capital.
The silence of the midnight watch was broken by the distant, rhythmic crunch of carriage wheels against the gravel highway. Two sentries stationed at the main gate straightened their postures, their hands resting instinctively on the hilts of their blades as a massive, heavily reinforced carriage rolled out of the dark and came to a halt.
The first guard squinted through the silver moonlight, his brow furrowing as he studied the foreign wood and the unique, gold-accented engravings on the vehicle’s frame. "Who could this be?" he murmured, glancing back at his companion. "Have you ever seen that emblem before?"
The second guard shook his head, his eyes fixed on the approaching vehicle. "No, I haven’t. But look at the iron plating along the base. It’s built like a fortress. Whoever is inside isn’t a common traveler. It looks important."
"I shall go see who it is then," the first guard said, nodding firmly. He unlatched the smaller pedestrian gate and stepped out into the open courtyard, his boots clicking softly against the stone. His hand remained tightly wrapped around the pommel of his sword as he approached the vehicle, his instincts on high alert.
As he drew closer, the moonlight caught the physical features of the two Hisponian soldiers standing at the rear platform. The sentry froze, his breath catching in his throat as he took in their immense, broad-shouldered statures and their deep, rich mahogany skin—a physical structure completely foreign to the northern lowlands.
Panic flared in his chest. Jerking his sword cleanly from its scabbard, the guard stepped back into a defensive stance, his voice cracking slightly against the wind. "Hey! You over there! State your identity and your mission here immediately!"
The driver pulled the reins, and one of the towering Hisponian soldiers stepped down from the rear platform. His massive, muscular frame completely eclipsed the northern sentry, casting a long shadow over the shivering guard. The soldier looked down at him, his face poised and entirely unbothered by the drawn weapon.
"We are here to return Queen Odesse to His Highness," the soldier stated. His voice was deep, smooth, and carried a distinct, low foreign accent that resonated in the quiet night air.
The sentry tilted his head, his confusion momentarily overriding his fear. "Queen Odesse? What do you mean? What kind of nonsense is this?"
Inside the dark cabin of the carriage, Odesse sat quietly against the plush woven cushions, her fingers tightly wringing together in her lap. The muffled sound of the confrontation outside filtered through the thick, reinforced wood, causing her heart to beat a little faster against her ribs.
"What could be happening out there?" she thought, exhaling a soft, tremulous breath as she tried to calm the rising tension in her chest. "I really am so nervous to face this place again... and this delay is not helping me in the slightest."
Outside, the guard kept his sword pointed at the towering soldier’s chest, though his arm trembled. "Look, I do not know who you are, sir," he said, shifting his boots back slowly to create space between them. "But you need to turn this carriage around and leave the capital immediately, or else we shall be forced to use lethal strength."
Up on the driver’s seat, the second Hisponian soldier shifted his weight, his sharp golden brown eyes looking down at the sentry. "What is going on down there?" he called out, his tone casual yet commanding.
The first guard flicked his eyes toward the carriage, his panic rising as he realized the scale of the men he was dealing with. "There’s two of them," he muttered softly to himself, his mind racing. "What kind of people are these? Where did they even come from?"
The soldier standing on the stone pathway stepped forward, his eyes locked onto the gates. "Open the gate."
"No, I shall not!" the guard barked, his voice rising in desperation. "Now leave this property at once!"
Hearing the commotion, the second guard who had been waiting quickly ran out of the gatehouse, his own blade drawn as he rushed to his companion’s side. His eyes widened in absolute disbelief as he took in the foreign armor and the imposing presence of the visitors. "Who are you? State your business!"
"He says they are here to drop off Queen Odesse," the first guard explained quickly, never breaking his gaze from the soldier in front of him.
The second guard scoffed, his grip tightening on his sword. "Queen Odesse? Buddy, listen to me—"
Before the words could fully leave his mouth, the heavy, gold-accented door of the carriage clicked open. The sound was distinct, cutting through the tense standoff like a blade. Both guards snapped their heads toward the vehicle, their jaws dropping and their eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated shock.
From the dark interior of the cabin, a woman stepped out onto the carriage ledge. Her head was held high, her posture radiating an innate, practiced majesty that required no title to recognize. Her long, striking silver hair cascaded down her shoulders like liquid starlight, catching the full brilliance of the moon.
"What is happening here?" Odesse asked, her voice calm, clear, and laced with an undeniable authority that instantly commanded the room.
The first guard’s sword slipped from his fingers, clattering loudly against the stone path. He fell to his knees, his voice reduced to a breathless whisper. "Your Highness... You’re alive. You’re really here."
Odesse looked down at them, a soft, knowing smile playing on her lips as she adjusted the fabric of her elegant traveling gown. "Of course I am alive. Was I supposed to be dead? Now, open the gate so we shall pass, won’t you?"
The two guards nodded frantically, their faces filled with a mixture of awe and absolute joy. They scrambled backward, sheathing their weapons with trembling hands as they threw the massive iron gates completely open, clearing the path into the royal grounds.
Odesse turned back gracefully, stepping into the cabin and closing the door behind her. She sat down gently and looked out the window as the carriage began to roll forward, passing through the threshold and into the expansive, familiar courtyard of the Moonlight Palace.
Looking up at the towering stone spires of the fortress, her smile widened, a deep, powerful sense of vindication washing over her. "I’m back," she whispered to the empty cabin, her eyes glistening. "I’m finally back."
