The car rolled to a smooth stop before the grand palace gates. Valex glanced at Odesse, his expression unreadable, then stepped out and came around to open her door. He extended his hand toward her, and she hesitated for a moment before taking it. His grip was steady, grounding. As her feet touched the marble steps, Kael exited from the other side, and the car drove off into the distance.
Odesse lifted her gaze to the palace before her. It was magnificent, walls gleaming like polished ivory, torches burning with golden light that reflected off the silver ornaments adorning the entrance. The air shimmered faintly with magic. Dozens of shifters were arriving, men and women in luxurious attire, their movements graceful and confident. They exuded a quiet, dangerous power that made Odesse’s heart pound.
She stood still for a moment, suddenly aware of how different she looked among them. Her pale human skin, her soft, uncertain steps, she felt misplaced, like an intruder in a world not meant for her.
Valex turned to her and offered his arm, his voice low but firm. "Come on."
She slipped her hand into the crook of his arm, her pulse racing. Together, they walked forward, Kael trailing silently behind them. The eyes of the crowd followed their every step. Whispered voices rose and fell, quick and sharp, carrying words she couldn’t make out but knew were about her. Still, she kept her chin high, recalling Miss Faye’s voice in her head: Carry your head with grace.
Inside, the palace hall glowed with gold and crystal. Music played softly, echoing through the vast room as humans moved about serving wine and delicacies. Valex led her to a spot reserved at the front, where two ornate chairs awaited them. He gestured for her to sit, and Kael stood close behind them, his presence quiet but protective.
Odesse’s hands trembled slightly in her lap. Valex noticed and leaned closer, his voice barely above a whisper. "It’s alright, Odesse. Relax."
She gave a faint nod, trying to calm the storm in her chest. Just then, a cheerful voice cut through the hum of conversation.
"Well, well, well, if it isn’t my old friend Valex."
Valex rose immediately, a faint smile crossing his face. "Orin," he greeted, shaking the man’s hand firmly.
Orin was tall, broad-shouldered, with sharp blue eyes that held a trace of mischief. "It’s been ages," he said, clapping Valex on the back. Then his gaze drifted toward Odesse. "And this must be Odesse, the human girl with the mark."
Odesse managed a small, polite smile. "Yes."
Orin chuckled. "Don’t worry. If Valex accepts you, then so do I."
Valex gave a faint nod, though his eyes lingered on Orin for a moment longer, something thoughtful passing through his expression.
"I want to introduce you to some people," Orin said, gesturing toward a group at the far end of the hall.
Valex hesitated, then looked back at Odesse. "I’ll be back soon," he told her gently.
She nodded, and he gave Kael a subtle glance, an unspoken command to keep watch. Kael inclined his head in understanding. Valex turned and followed Orin into the crowd, his presence swallowed by the sea of shifters.
Odesse sat quietly, hands clasped together, eyes darting from one glittering figure to another. Laughter and chatter filled the air, yet she felt like a ghost sitting among them, visible but unseen.
Minutes slipped by, feeling like hours. Her head began to ache, the noise pressing in on her. She leaned slightly toward Kael, who stood stiffly beside her.
"Um... Kael," she said softly. "Can I please go outside?"
Kael frowned. "I’m afraid I can’t let you. Master Valex said you shouldn’t leave."
"I just need some air," she said, voice quiet but steady. "I feel nauseous. I’ll only be a moment, I promise."
Kael’s eyes narrowed slightly, studying her. Then he sighed. "Alright," he said finally. "But I’m coming with you."
"Of course," she replied with a small smile of relief.
She rose from her seat, smoothing the fabric of her dress, and began walking toward the large doors at the end of the hall. Kael followed a few paces behind, his footsteps firm and protective. As the heavy doors opened, the cool air of the courtyard brushed against her skin, and for the first time that night, Odesse felt like she could breathe again.
The cool evening air brushed against Odesse’s skin as she stood outside, her breath forming faint clouds in the dim light. She closed her eyes for a moment, feeling the breeze calm her nerves. After a while, she turned to Kael and said softly, "Can I please get a drink? I’m really thirsty."
Kael hesitated, glancing toward the palace doors. "Wait here," he said at last. "I’ll get it for you."
Odesse gave him a warm smile. "Thank you, Kael."
He nodded once and disappeared inside. Odesse turned back toward the courtyard, admiring the glowing palace and the faint shimmer of magic that danced in the air. Everything looked alive, almost ethereal.
When she looked back again, Kael was nowhere in sight. She hesitated, then whispered to herself, "I’ll just take a little stroll. He won’t mind."
Smiling, she began to walk slowly along the stone path, her heels clicking softly. The air was filled with the sound of distant music, laughter, and the gentle rustle of trees.
Moments later, Kael returned with a glass of red liquid, but froze when he saw the spot empty. "Odesse?" he called, his tone tight with worry. "Where has she gone?"
He rushed inside, weaving through the crowd until he spotted Valex and Orin standing where Odesse had been seated earlier. Valex’s gaze snapped toward him immediately.
"Where did you go, Kael?" Valex asked sharply. "And where is Odesse?"
"Sire," Kael said quickly, bowing slightly, "she was feeling nauseous, so we stepped out for some air. She said she was thirsty, so I went to get her a drink, but when I came back... she was gone."
Valex’s eyes widened, anger flashing beneath his calm exterior. Before he could speak, Orin placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder.
"Don’t worry," Orin said smoothly. "She’s probably nearby. I’ll alert my guards to search the grounds."
But Valex didn’t wait. He turned and strode away, his aura sharp and restless.
Meanwhile, Odesse had wandered into a secluded garden. The trees there were massive, their branches forming a canopy that dimmed the moonlight. Fireflies floated lazily between the leaves, giving the whole place a dreamlike glow.
"Wow," Odesse whispered, her voice soft with wonder. "This place is beautiful... looks like I’m the only one here."
She spotted a stone bench near a fountain and walked over, sighing as she sat down. "Ugh, these heels are killing me," she muttered. "And my head... it hurts."
Her vision blurred slightly. "I should... get back to Kael," she mumbled, pressing her hand to her temple. "But I can’t move... everything’s spinning."
The dizziness deepened, and before she could fight it, her eyes fluttered shut. Darkness pulled her under.
Hours... or maybe minutes, later, Valex burst into the garden, his heart pounding. He scanned the area, his senses flaring until his gaze fell on a figure lying still on the ground.
"Odesse," he whispered.
He ran to her, kneeling beside her. She lay flat on the cold grass, her face pale under the moonlight. His breath caught when he saw it, thin trails of black blood trickling from her eyes.
"Odesse!" he said, lifting her gently into his arms. "Odesse, wake up. It’s me Valex. Please, wake up."
Footsteps thundered behind him. Kael and Orin arrived, their faces grim.
"Sire, let me help..." Kael started, but Valex turned on him, fury flashing in his eyes.
"No!" he snapped, holding Odesse closer. Kael fell silent, guilt tightening his jaw as Orin placed a hand on his shoulder to stop him.
Valex looked back down at her, voice trembling. "Odesse, please... wake up."
Then, suddenly, she gasped... her chest rising sharply as if she’d been underwater too long. Her eyes opened weakly. "Master... Valex," she breathed.
He exhaled shakily, his voice breaking. "Where happened to you, Odesse?"
Before he could say more, she lifted her hand weakly to his cheek and kissed him, soft but desperate. For a brief moment, time froze. Then, just as quickly, she went limp in his arms.
"Odesse!"
Valex stood, cradling her against his chest. His voice was cold, commanding. "Kael... get the car."
Kael immediately turned and ran. Valex looked to Orin. "I’m sorry, Orin. We have to leave this early." 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝚠𝚎𝚋𝗻𝗼𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝚘𝐦
Orin gave a slow nod. "Of course. Take care of her."
Valex strode away, disappearing into the night with Odesse in his arms. Orin stood there in the garden, watching the moonlight fall across the fountain. A slow smile curved his lips.
