In the neighboring territory of the Bloodfang Pack, the atmosphere inside the fortress war room was thick with the scent of pine wood and old parchment. Valex sat in a high-backed leather chair across the massive oak map table from King Sylas, who chose to conduct his private meetings here rather than the formal grandeur of his throne room. Kael stood straight and composed behind Valex.
Valex looked entirely composed, his fingers lightly tapping the armrest as his dark eyes scanned the plotted border lines on the map between their two packs.
"The western crossing has always been a blind spot for both our territories, Sylas," Valex said, his voice deep, steady, and carrying his usual commanding weight. "If we do not synchronize our patrol schedules, rogue factions will continue to exploit the gap."
King Sylas leaned forward, resting his heavy forearms on the table. He was an older alpha, his face scarred from past border wars, but his expression was cooperative. "I agree, Valex. But my men are already stretched thin guarding the eastern trade routes. If I reallocate a squadron to the western crossing, my merchants become vulnerable."
"Then we divide the labor," Valex responded smoothly, shifting a small iron marker on the map table to demonstrate. "The Moonlight Pack will cover the northern perimeter of the crossing during the active trade hours. Your men take the night shifts. It cuts the resource strain on both our factions by half."
Sylas watched the movement of the marker, nodding slowly in approval. "A fair proposition. It ensures the borders remain airtight without compromising the trade lines. I will have my commander draft the official patrol routes."
Valex nodded once, a gesture of mutual respect.
King Sylas leaned back in his carved chair, a hospitable smile breaking across his weathered features as he looked across the map table at Valex.
"We are hosting a Royal Masquerade Ball in four days’ time," Sylas said, gesturing with his hand. "It is an exclusive affair for the reigning royal families of our neighboring packs. Full masquerade attire, masks mandatory. It will be an evening of grand ball dancing and casual diplomacy, away from the rigid protocols of the court. It would honor the Bloodfang Pack to have you and your palace represented, Valex."
Valex listened quietly, his expression perfectly composed and calm under the steady focus of his mind. He considered the invitation for a brief moment, the strategy of maintaining strong royal alliances clear in his thoughts, before inclining his head in a regal nod.
"The Moonlight Pack accepts the invitation, Sylas," Valex responded, his voice smooth and steady. "A grand event of this caliber is an excellent opportunity to solidify our shared interests. We shall attend."
Sylas clapped a heavy hand on the table, clearly pleased with the response. "Excellent. I will ensure the formal royal invitations and security protocols for the masquerade are sent to your commander."
Kael looked at Sylas and then back straight. Valex smirked and said, "Yes, that will be good."
Sylas smiled and said, "My wife can not wait to see the queen. She could not attend your wedding or get the chance to visit because she had given birth..."
Valex smiled and said, "I am very sure my wife would love to meet her, she is a very cheerful person."
Sylas smiled and said, "I am very sure lady Odesse is cheerful, because she has made you a cheerful person."
Immediately, Kael looked at Sylas and then at Valex as he saw Valex’s jaw tighten. Kael sighed out and looked forward. Valex didn’t say anything.
Sylas said, "How is lady Odesse? I remember a search was done on her behalf."
Valex looked at Sylas, not saying anything; he just glared at him. Sylas noticed the air in the room became tensed and he began chuckling nervously. He looked at Kael, who just stared at him blankly and then looked away.
Sylas said, "What is wrong? Did something happen to lady Odesse?"
Valex sighed out and smiled, saying, "It is not queen Odesse anymore, but rather Azure."
Sylas looked shocked as he said, "Azure? Who is that?"
Valex tightened his fist as he tried to talk with self-control, saying, "My wife, the queen of the Moonlight Pack, the one whom the search was done for last month."
Sylas looked at Kael again. Kael raised his eyebrow, tilted his head slightly, and shook it subtly.
Sylas looked at Valex, who was looking down at the table, and smiled, saying, "Well Valex, my wife and I cannot wait to see you and lady Odesse..."
Kael looked at him immediately. Sylas stuttered as he tried to correct himself, saying, "I mean lady Azure, my wife and I cannot wait to see you both at the ball."
There was silence, and then Valex said slowly without raising his head, "We shall take our leave now."
Valex stood up, and Sylas stood up too. Valex walked towards the door as Kael followed him. He opened the door and walked out as Kael closed it behind him. Sylas remained there, his face confused, as he said, "Azure? Who is that?"
...
In the carriage, Valex sat beside the window and Kael sat opposite him.
Kael looked out at the passing landscape, his expression hardened into a grim mask as the steady rhythm of the horses’ hooves echoed against the dirt road. The silence inside the carriage was heavy, almost suffocating, but his mind was racing much faster than the wheels turning beneath them.
"It has been a month," Kael thought, his hands resting tightly on his knees. "A full month, and I still haven’t found a single trace of Odesse. The tracking units are returning empty-handed, the trails are cold, and the palace is falling apart under a lie. Is she really dead? Did that woman truly kill her?
He shook his head slowly, a sudden surge of fierce resistance rising in his chest. "No. I can’t give up. I refuse to believe it. I am certain Odesse hasn’t given up, wherever she is. She is stronger than anyone thinks."
His jaw clenched as he stared blankly across the small space of the carriage. "The future of this kingdom is determined by what his highness does, and the only way it can come out positive is if he is with Odesse. No one else. Two destined souls cannot be torn apart by whatever foul magic is choking this pack."
He shifted his gaze, his eyes locking onto the man sitting opposite him. Valex was staring blankly out the window, the passing shadows of the trees cutting across his powerful features. The King’s face was still firm, holding the rigid dominance of an Alpha, but beneath that iron facade, it wore a gentle, unspoken confusion. Valex rubbed his fingers together nervously, a small, uncharacteristic habit that he had picked up only recently.
Valex was lost in a labyrinth of thoughts that he could neither map nor comprehend. "Who is Odesse?" he asked himself, the name feeling like a jagged stone in his throat. "Well, I know she was my wife. Azure told me. The servants told me. She was the one who died shortly after our mating night. But how come I do not remember her at all? Not a single smile, not the sound of her voice, nothing."
He touched his lap gently, his brow furrowing deeper as the questions began to pile up like a heavy weight on his chest. "And why do people still talk about her? What significance did she play in this pack that her name is still whispered in every corner of the fortress? Why do they speak about her in the present format, as if she is still out there, when she is already dead? They should move forward. The pack should be focusing on Azure."
He leaned his head back against the leather cushion, a sharp throb beginning to form behind his temples. "And why is it that whenever I hear her name, my head hurts? It feels like a physical assault on my mind, like I cannot control myself, like my own thoughts are trying to tear their way out of my skull. Who is this woman? What did we share? Why does she stay in my mind when I have absolutely no memory of her?"
He gripped the fabric of his trousers, his chest rising and falling in shallow, ragged breaths. "How close was she to my heart?"
A sudden wave of guilt hit him, sharp and cold. He shook his head quickly, trying to dispel the thoughts before they could take root. "Why do I say all this? Why am I letting a ghost disturb my mind? I have a wife. A beautiful wife. Azure is amazing, caring, and loving. She is the one by my side."
He paused, his internal voice faltering as a strange, hollow emptiness echoed in his chest. "But... but... Odesse."
The name came back, unbidden, striking him with the force of a physical blow. "I want to remember her. If only I could see a picture of her, just a glimpse to understand why my entire body rebels against her absence. Why does my heart beat this much right now? Why do I feel like I can’t control my emotions anymore? What is this?"
He raised his hand slowly, pressing his palm flat against his center. Beneath his leather armor, his heart was hammering violently, a frantic, wild rhythm that made his breath catch in his throat. His ears turned a crimson red, the heat flushing up his neck as a primal, instinctual panic flooded his veins.
"Why do I feel this?" he thought, his eyes widening slightly in the dim light of the carriage. "It feels like my heart is about to explode. But I never felt this way toward my ex-wives. I never felt this catastrophic pull toward anyone except... Azure? No, Azure is the only one who holds my heart now. She is my Queen. So who are you, Odesse? Why do I feel like you hold so much power over me, like your very name is a command my soul wants to obey, but something in me tries to resist it and I cannot?"
The strain became too much to bear. Valex closed his eyes tightly, trying to force the chaos in his mind to settle into darkness.
But the moment his eyelids shut, the darkness fractured.
A sudden, violent surge of light broke through the void of his mind, dragging him backward into a memory. It was blurry, distorted, and washed in a brilliant, blinding silver light that didn’t belong to the sun. Through the haze, he saw the distinct silhouette of a woman. She had long, striking silver hair that seemed to catch the moonlight like a halo. She was walking toward him, her movements fluid and familiar, and then she was in his arms, hugging him tightly.
He could feel the phantom weight of her against his chest. In the memory, his own hands moved automatically, holding her securely by the waist as if she were the most precious thing in the entire world. She pulled back slowly, her face still a beautiful, agonizing blur, but her touch was real. She held his face gently with both hands, her fingers warm against his skin, and her voice echoed clearly through the halls of his mind, soft and filled with an unbreakable devotion:
"I love you, my king."
Immediately, Valex’s eyes shot open.
He gasped for air, his heart lunging into his throat as he sat straight up in his seat. The carriage seemed to spin around him, the air suddenly turning freezing cold. A thick layer of sweat broke out across his forehead, and his dark eyes were wide with absolute, raw shock. He stared blankly at the wooden wall of the carriage, his hands shaking as he gripped the armrests.
"What memory is this?" Valex whispered aloud, his voice cracking, entirely unprompted as he stared into nothingness.
Kael shifted in his seat, his sharp eyes locking onto the King’s frantic expression. He didn’t say a word, but his posture went completely rigid.
Valex kept his hand pressed against his chest, his breathing ragged as the image of the silver-haired woman burned behind his retinas. The bond in his chest, which had been frozen and silent for weeks, gave a sudden, violent throb, sending a wave of heat straight to his soul. He didn’t know who she was, he didn’t understand the memory, and that made him completely disturbed.
