- Chapter 1: Prologue - Part 1
Finally, with the subjugation of the Empire, the world had achieved peace. However, it was not a victorious peace.
After the explosion of the bombs, most of the cities of the world had been completely destroyed. Hundreds of millions of people had lost their homes. Several historical places were reduced to ashes. Where there had been wonderful cities, now there was nothing but rubble and ruins.
There was no mourning, but tears were shed nonetheless. Millions of people had lost everything: homes, property, even memories. The number of refugees was incalculable. For several days, all the nations of the world had to do their utmost to contain the wave of desperate people.
But then, after the tears, the world recovered. Everyone rolled up their sleeves and got back to work. After all, there were two things humans were very good at. The first was to destroy; the second was to rebuild.
Millions of people set about rebuilding their cities, house by house. It was the largest mass mobilization ever in history. And of course, the animals contributed. With the help of the dinosaurs, the work accelerated enormously.
New technologies also made their contribution. Teleportation technology greatly facilitated transportation, allowing raw materials to be brought from factories to cities under construction. Indeed, many raw materials were brought to Eden directly from the colony of Davis. In this way, removing the rubble and placing new foundations was simple; after that, the rest was easy.
Nations seized the opportunity to build more modern and environmentally sustainable cities. They built on the cities of Beleriard to create places where humans and animals could live together. The work was entrusted to the best architects and engineers and legions of workers were made available.
War had brought humans and dinosaurs closer together, and peace brought them even closer: working together tirelessly to rebuild, the relationship between the two peoples became closer than ever. Thanks to the dinosaurs, jobs were much easier, which made humans grateful; and the dinosaurs saw that humans were building cities meant for a mixed population, which made them grateful too. Ironically, with his latest act of madness, Wafner had brought humanity and the dinosaurs even closer together.
It would take years for the cities to be fully restored, but the smiles of hope on people’s faces were already visible after the first few weeks, although there was still a long way to go. After all, as that wise man said, hope died last. And certainly Wafner had been able to kill many things, including his own humanity, but he certainly hadn’t killed hope.
Sobek smiled whenever he looked at the huge construction sites. By now, his job was done. He had succeeded: from now on, the world was finally united.
After its surrender, the Empire was punished very severely: not only was the nation forced to give up large chunks of its territory, but it was also ordered to pay all war damages, including those of the invasion of Sinar . All army generals and officers had been tried and sentenced to death, and the navy, air force and land army had been disbanded. The armaments had been distributed among the various nations and many of them had been scrapped and transformed into materials useful for reconstruction. 𝑓𝑟ℯ𝘦𝓌𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝑐ℴ𝓂
The debt that the Empire would have to pay was enormous and probably would not be paid off for decades. Were it for some, however, those conditions were all too good. Many heads of state believed that the Empire should not have the right to join the Eden Union before having paid its debt, but Sobek, mindful of what those terrible peace conditions could unleash (remembering what had happened in Germany after World War I) asked Al to convince the leaders of the international organization to choose otherwise.
Thanks to the gab of the allosaurus and the support of Jocelyne and Queen Mackenzie, the heads of state decided that the Empire would be governed by a foreign delegation for a year, during which time the new ruling class would have to worry about drafting a Constitution compatible with the order of the Eden Union. However, in the meantime the Empire would have been considered part of the Eden Union anyway, so Sobek shared the mangers with the local population and sent the dinosaurs to help with the reconstruction; in this way, although the conditions of peace were rather heavy, a strong feeling of revenge would not have matured.
After the stipulated year, a new Constitution of 180 articles came into force in the Empire, now renamed the Democratic Republic of Almagna. It would have taken the ruling class years to create a new civil code that harmonized with the new laws, but slowly what was a totalitarian dictatorship would be transformed into a democracy.
As Sobek had predicted, the imperial populace accepted the help of the dinosaurs willingly. Though many of them had lost family members to their fault, all of them were able to understand that Wafner alone was to blame. Instead, they were happy to have food on the table and someone to help them rebuild their homes.
Since the war was now over, many of the countries left out of the Eden Union for fear of nuclear war rushed to join it. Most of them already had a constitution compatible with its dictates and those who did not have it did not take more than a few years to modernize. Seeing what had happened in a divisive situation and fearing being oppressed again by the new international organization, the nations simply chose to unite with it to ward off any future friction. Only a very few nations chose to stay out, but Sobek didn’t care: they were nations too weak to pose any threat and surely they would be assimilated into the Eden Union in the coming decades. He had no intention of speeding up that process. The leaders of the Eden Union found themselves in agreement with him: after so much suffering, no one had any more desire to shed more blood.
Over the years, the Eden Union continued to grow stronger: the Senate, the Court and the Government expanded and drafted new laws to unify the nations even more. More and more borders were broken down and more and more rights were recognized even in less civilized nations. Sobek could observe the development of the Eden Union with satisfaction: he knew that within decades or even centuries the barriers between nations would definitely collapse, and what at the moment was only a pluralism of states united in one organization would turn into a confederation, then into a federation, and finally into a single global state.
After his last war, humanity was united as never in its history. Sobek knew that by now he had definitely won: if he too decided to withdraw and do nothing more, the change could no longer be stopped.
A decade after the end of the war, there was no longer any sign of the enormous amount of atomic explosions: the cities had been completely rebuilt, even if some of them had been decided to leave them destroyed, as a warning to future generations and to remember how much that war had cost. But they weren’t the same cities as before: they were greener, with more gardens, and much more technological. Walking inside them, it seemed that technological development and respect for the environment had finally found a balance.
Huge skyscrapers soared into the sky, connected by elevated glass bridges, while on the ground the roads had been replaced by meadows and forests. The advent of teleportation technology had made car travel unnecessary, so the engines had been abandoned. By now, the only cars left were sports cars that were used for fun. The same was true of motorcycles and planes, and even ships. The transport industry was now based exclusively on teleportation, greatly speeding up trade and reviving the economy in no time.
The only ones who still owned cars were the policemen, but they weren’t normal cars: thanks to the study of Sobek’s mutations and the research of Henry Wu, the scientists of the Eden Union had created vehicles capable of flying in the air and therefore moving very quickly from one part of the city to another. This, added to the now non-existent poverty, decreased crime to historic lows. By now the only crimes were domestic ones or those committed by young thugs.
People living in cities could go to work in an environment dominated by technology, then go out and go for a walk in the wilderness. The forests were dotted with small paths where people could walk without risking injury and the animals made sure to always keep them clean and tidy. Otherwise, people had nothing to fear: now that there was peace between animals and humans, no one was in danger of being attacked. Conversely, meeting an animal was now potentially the way to meet a new friend, even if it was a five-meters-tall t-rex.
And not just in the cities... all over the world nature had now reigned again. Even those nations that were not yet part of the Eden Union were now covered in dense forests that resounded with the song of birds. The damage that humanity had caused for centuries was now only a memory. The planet was healed, and the level of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere was only slightly higher than normal by now. The glaciers were reforming, the climate was returning to normal, and life was thriving.
Finally, the world was blooming again.
The people, especially the older ones, had a hard time adjusting to the new world, but still they were able to do it. And it had to be said that almost everyone much preferred the new world to the old one.
Now, you could go on a yacht vacation and swim among ichthyosaurs. If you went to a beach, you could play ball with seals or notosaurs. Divers could rely on sharks, killer whales or even whales to explore the ocean depths and to be rescued if they fell ill. If you had a parachute or a glider, you could jump ten thousand feet and fly with flocks of pterosaurs and birds. Going on a safari in the prairies meant having the opportunity to ride a diplodocus and observe first-hand animal species considered extremely rare until a few years ago.
Dinosaur professors were now present in all schools and many animals helped in the jobs, favoring even more the mixing of the two peoples. All diseases had been cured through the combined efforts of human and dinosaur scientists, and science had made great strides in every field. After ten years, the bonds between humans and animals were so strong that it would have been impossible to break them; while many racists still existed, they were destined to become an ’endangered species’. The new generations were much more open-minded and preferred unity to division.
The planet Davis was now almost completely terraformed and several colonies had been built on it. Not only that: even the Moon now housed a colony, built on its dark side to avoid spoiling the beautiful view of the satellite from Eden. Thanks to teleportation technology, moving between colonies was now as easy as going from room to room. And thanks to scientific advances due to the study of abilities such as [Radiation Absorption], which had among the characteristics of increasing gravity to collapse the mushroom cloud, the colonies had been able to reproduce the gravity of Eden artificially, thus making useless the endless workouts before travelling. Thanks to this, many new projects were now waiting to be implemented: the Eden Union planned to create colonies on other moons and planets in the next few years.
Having sorted out all of its internal problems, humanity was now looking to the stars. Space was the last frontier. Many dreamed of being able to use teleportation technology to colonize worlds even beyond the solar system, but that dream was still far from the future, even if it was not unlikely that it would come true in the near future.
A decade after the end of the war, Sobek could say he had now completed his mission. The world was now free, united and at peace. Famine, pollution, hunger and poverty were no more. Now, he just had to leave time for time: one day, animals and humans would be so close that future generations would not even realize they belonged to different species.
He had won.
It was a good feeling. Finally, he could enjoy a well-deserved rest. No more worries, no more sleepless nights, no more tension: now, he could finally dedicate himself only to himself.
He had already dismantled his own army and was now hardly in command of anyone; he had left the animals full freedom of choice. Even though he was now a ’beast emperor’, in charge of all the vertebrates on the planet, it had been years since he gave an order. His subordinates were slowly becoming self-sufficient.
Buck, Carnopo, Snock, Rambo, Al, Monica, Apache, Pierce, Blue and Mazu had all started families, and even the old Eema and Old Li had found the strength to generate another offspring. By now they had spread all over the world, choosing the most pleasant place for them.
Buck, Monica, Pierce and Blue had settled near the human cities, so they could interact with them as much as possible. Even Old Li and Al had sneaked into the human cities, so they could continue to carry out their duties as negotiators and advisers. Apache had instead settled on a small mountain and Eema had returned to her native forest. Mazu had plunged into the deep sea, far away from any coast. Carnopo had decided to travel throughout the human world, wanting to see what it was like in peace and not in war. Snock, on the other hand, had chosen the opposite direction and had set out to explore the virgin continents, keeping away from the humans, and Rambo had chosen to accompany what he now considered his best friend.
Jocelyne had changed too. Once her presidential term ended, she made sure that everything was running smoothly in the government, and then she participated in the reconstruction of the destroyed cities of her country. She’d done it for three years, and then, when most of the work could be considered done, she’d decided she’d had enough and left her country. As she had told Sobek, she wanted to get a country, so she went to a tourist resort with her parents and there she gave herself to mad joy, finally free from any worries and burdens. She had told Sobek that she wouldn’t stay away for more than a year, but in reality she stayed there for a full five, finally relaxing as she deserved. Only after that period of freedom did she decide that she was bored too much and that she wanted to get back into the game, so she enrolled in law school as she had told Sobek she wanted to do. During this time she had also started going to a very good therapist so that she could face and overcome what she had been through once and for all. Even though her recovery was a very long road, she was confident that she could do it. She had faced bigger challenges after all.
In short, everyone had moved on with their lives, except Sobek, who all this time had continued to watch over the world to make sure everything was fine. But after ten years, he decided that he could finally afford himself to breathe a sigh of relief too. Now the time had come for her well-deserved reward: rest and... the love of a family.
After all those years, he thought the world was safe enough to bear a child.
