The explosions and roars were so loud they could be heard even from the center of the forest.
To prevent the weaker ones from getting involved, Sobek had ordered Old Li to bring elders, puppies and all those not fit to fight in the thick of the forest, in the fortification erected by Eema. Together the triceratops and the ankylosaurus had brought everyone to safety and were now waiting for the noises to stop. 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞
"This mess gives me chills" Eema murmured as she listened to the distant explosions.
"You don’t have to worry" Old Li replied.
"How can you be so calm?"
“I am not at all. But I know that by worrying I would get nothing but make things worse. So it’s better to get distracted and wait for news"
Eema sighed, then agreed that the ankylosaurus was right. "Yes, okay" she said, nibbling again on a blade of grass.
Shortly thereafter, however, the explosions ceased. Eema and Old Li raised their heads in the direction of battle, followed by almost all of the dinosaurs, when suddenly Rambo teleported in front of them. "We won! We won the battle!" he screamed.
***********
Quaritch couldn’t believe it. How? How could this have happened?
A surprise attack from within was the worst attack the enemy could carry out, a direct blow to the heart of the army. But Quaritch had taken precautions upon precautions for this. He had made the fleet virtually impenetrable. How did the dinosaurs get on board without first crossing the block of ships and submarines?
It was a mystery he probably would never solve. He knew that the battle, and with it the war, was already over. The dinosaurs had won.
But he wasn’t willing to let it go. He could still do something. And if he didn’t make it, he would die taking as many dinosaurs as possible to the grave with him.
He went down into the hold and unfolded his power armor. He wasted no time and immediately put on the wired gloves, then entered the exoskeleton and went out onto the deck.
Several dinosaurs saw him and jumped at him, but Quaritch didn’t fire. He wasn’t going to waste bullets on small fish. He pulled out a giant knife and sliced through the dinosaurs that stood in front of him, then pushed them away with his huge robotic arms.
He didn’t know if he had killed them and he didn’t care; he continued to advance in search of his target of him. If he could find the leader of those bastards, he could at least make things easier for humans.
He was so focused on looking around that he hardly noticed that a t-rex was coming upon him; at the last moment he dodged him and threw a punch in the face. The animal rolled away and the armor that covered it was dented.
Quaritch watched him. He had a moon on his head, which meant he was a big shot. If he killed him, surely his pack leader would arrive. “Get up, beast! I’m not done with you!"
The tyrannosaurus stood up and glared at him. “How dare you talk to me like that, worm? I’ll finish you!"
The giant dinosaur charged, but Quaritch remained motionless in a guard position. If the t-rex had bitten his armor it would have certainly seriously damaged it: the delicate joints would have broken under a bite of more than 60,000 Newtons. He had to finish the fight with a single blow.
As the tyrannosaurus approached he directed all his energy to his right arm; he knew the t-rex was staring at the left, where he held the knife. When he was close enough he raised his weapon pretending to want to hit him; of course the dinosaur dodged the blow, but in doing so he exposed himself and Quaritch was able to punch him in the face with his right arm powered by thousands of kilowatts of energy.
The helmet of the t-rex shattered and so did its jaw; the bones of the skull seemed to tear apart. The animal staggered and then fell to the ground unconscious, while a pool of blood widened below him. Quaritch advanced to give him the coup de grace, when suddenly a devastating roar hit him forcing him to retreat; the glass of the armor cracked despite being reinforced.
Despite this, Quaritch smiled. As he had foreseen, his great enemy had arrived. Sobek was there, with his terrifying armor on him, checking the condition of the tyrannosaurus; in a few moments he healed him and ordered some dinosaurs to take him away while he was unconscious. Then he turned to him: “Forget it, Quaritch! It’s over. You lost"
Quaritch raised the knife towards him. "Nothing’s done as long as I breathe"
"Stupid! Look around!" Sobek growled, pointing at the fleet that was sinking bit by bit. “Your army is gone. We won. Do you think you can fight against all of us?"
“No, not against all of your dinosaurs. But against you, yes” A wicked smile broke on Quaritch’s face. "Lord Sobek, I challenge you for the position of pack leader!"
The spinosaurus was silent for a moment. "Are you serious?" he finally asked.
"Of course yes. You know, we’ve been studying you all this time” Quaritch replied. “You may be smart, but you remain just an animal. You could safely order all your dinosaurs to attack me and you would easily win. That would be what I’d do... but you won’t, will you? You won’t do it because you are bound by your instincts. A challenge for the pack leader is a fight between just two contenders. Come on, come on... tell your dinosaurs to attack me"
Sobek bared his teeth and snapped his claws, but not a single word came out of his mouth. Quaritch was right: his instincts compelled him to accept the challenge. If he pulled back he would admit his fear of him, and then the other dinosaurs would lose respect for him. He had to fight.
Quaritch laughed. "See? This is the difference between you and humans. We humans know how to exploit the weaknesses of others to our advantage, you don’t"
"Silence!" Sobek growled. "If it is a challenge with me that you want, then you will have it"
"Great" Quaritch replied. "To you the first move"
Sobek did not have it repeated. His footsteps moved swiftly across the deck of the ship, but suddenly [Supreme instinct] warned him of imminent danger; at the last microsecond Sobek dodged and then felt a stabbing pain in his right shoulder. He looked down and saw that his right arm had just exploded.
"Fuck. You moved. I guess animal intuition is hard to fool" Quaritch grumbled, while one of the armor vents still smoked.
Sobek gritted his teeth. His arm grew back in seconds, completely reforming the muscles and bones, but it was still bumped. "How...?"
"I told you we studied you, right? You have left many clues about yourself, lord Sobek” Quaritch replied. “We collected the material obtained when you were still in the middle stage of your evolution and built these armor specifically to defeat you. Mine, in particular, is an even more powerful prototype than the others”. He pointed to the nozzle he had just fired: "This armor has six missiles that can exert immense pressure. They don’t emit heat: all energy is converted into speed. They work through a complicated mechanism that allows them to reach immense speeds despite the limited space available. Your skin can withstand a pressure of 30 tons, and I’m more than sure that armor will protect you even more... but these missiles exert a thousand times more pressure, enough to create a chain reaction capable of exploding skin, flesh and blood with a single touch"
Sobek hissed, but kept his cool. Quaritch’s armor had only five vents; which meant he had only four missiles left. "It does not matter. I can regenerate, you have seen it"
“Oh, but I already knew that. We know that your body is full of extremely ductile cells. However, nothing can operate in the absence of certain organs” Quaritch replied. “Your regeneration speed makes you almost invincible. Even if I would destroyed your heart and lungs, you would rebuild them faster than it would take to die. However, the same cannot be said for the brain. If I can destroy your skull, then not even your regenerative power can save you. And you are not a god, you are mortal like me. Which means I can kill you, I just have to work a little harder"
Sobek’s eyes flashed. "Don’t count on it. You caught me off guard once, you won’t be able to do it a second time!"
He attacked again, and this time Quaritch didn’t have time to react; his claws struck the knife, but it was barely scratched. "Surprised? It is built with a special alloy. Harder than steel and titanium! You can’t break it with your claws!" Quaritch laughed, then plunged the knife into Sobek’s shoulder. The armor protected the dinosaur and the blade stuck in it, but did not reach the flesh.
Sobek opened his jaws and prepared to bite the armor; even though it was built with strong materials, there was no metal on the planet that could remain unharmed after a bite capable of exerting 25 tons of pressure! But once again [Supreme instinct] saved his life: the last one dodged, just in time for Quaritch to launch a second missile. Instead of his head, the weapon hit the sail on his back, making him scream in pain. Quaritch did not give up and fired another shot, this time managing to hit the neck. Sobek quickly realized that the general at that pass would hit his head, so he activated [Teleportation] and took the armor with him, where he could finally regenerate.
Quaritch turned in surprise. “So that’s it... I can’t believe it. You can move outside of space... unheard of. What power can do such a thing?"
Sobek braced himself for a new attack. He realized he wouldn’t get very far by continuing like this, so he opened his jaws and used [Devastating roar].
Quaritch had to call upon all the strength of the armor to avoid being thrown off, but he managed to resist. He still had to retreat several steps, but the exoskeleton did not break. “Ha ha! Just forget it. It is specially built to withstand high sound frequencies!" he laughed.
But unexpectedly Sobek smiled. “Yes, I had imagined it. I just wanted to test my theory” he said. "That armor is a real jewel, created especially to kill the unkillable. Truly a technology prodigy. You humans always create interesting toys... however, it also has its weaknesses"
The spinosaurus pointed to the exoskeleton. "Currently you have only two missiles left: the cockpit is too small for there to be more than one in each vent. However, you also have those two machine guns on the sides of the armor that you haven’t used yet. I’m not an expert, but I’m sure they can fire hard enough to at least annoy me, allowing you to fire the missiles. In addition, you also have the knife. This makes your defense impenetrable, because unlike you, I have to get close to hit you, but you can do it from a distance"
"So you realized you were at a disadvantage?" Quaritch laughed.
“Ha ha! Absolutely no. I just wanted to assess the situation well, and I have to tell you... congratulations, general. You’re the first to force me to really use all my tricks up my sleeve!"
Quaritch didn’t understand for a moment, then a surprised sob came from his mouth. A strange matter appeared around Sobek’s right arm that quickly condensed into a machine gun.
Sobek laughed. That was the first time he ever used his [Personal weapon]. "What’s up? Don’t you expect me to have given weapons to everyone but myself?" he laughed, then opened fire.
The bullets crossed the area and Quaritch was hit. His exoskeleton could protect him, but soon several red lights flashed on the control panel.
’Bastard...’ the general thought. "He’s hitting the exposed spots to damage the equipment..." he Couldn’t win by staying on defense: he had to attack! He activated his machine guns and fired back, but to his surprise, Sobek’s machine gun turned into a shield! "What? What kind of weapon is that?"
“Do you want the truth? I don’t know either. But if you want my theory this is not a weapon... it is more an extension of myself and I can modify it according to my will" replied Sobek, then changing the shield into a round object and throwing it at Quaritch. The general realized too late that it was a grenade and one of the armor legs exploded.
Frightened, Quaritch fired one of his missiles again, hoping at least to distract Sobek, but the pieces of the grenade instantly reassembled and formed a bazooka in Sobek’s paws, who fired a shot disintegrating the incoming bullet. Before Quaritch could react, the weapon had already changed back to a sniper rifle and with two quick shots knocked out the armor machine guns.
"Son of a bitch... you had such power and you never showed it..."
"I never needed it"
Desperate, Quaritch fired his last missile. Sobek changed his weapon back into a bazooka and destroyed it. After that he changed the weapon into a sword and advanced towards Quaritch to end the matter with a melee.
Quaritch had now lost all his ranged weapons and no longer had a leg; all he could do was use the knife to defend himself. He and Sobek exchanged a few blows, but then the spinosaurus spun around and hit the armor with its tail. Quaritch fell backwards and Sobek took advantage of his distraction to change the weapon into a katana and severed the arms of the exoskeleton. Then he used it as a lever and uncovered the cockpit, exposing Quaritch.
Sobek looked at his face. And then he whispered to him: “I told you it was over. Now join your soldiers in their water tomb!"
The huge katana descended on Quaritch and sliced him cleanly in two halves. Blood spattered everywhere and the general barely had time to curse his enemy with a thought before the cold embrace of death enveloped him.
