Sobek observed the small screen that Blue was handing him very carefully. Henry Wu’s execution took place live internationally, it didn’t take long before he even got to the ears of the dinosaurs.
As soon as he learned of the events that had taken place in the human world, Blue immediately called Sobek stating that he had very important news. Many other dinosaurs gathered around him and listened as well.
When Blue had finally finished showing everything he had discovered, the silence had returned to reign. Now the dinosaurs were staring intently at Sobek.
The dinosaurs knew nothing of science, of course, but they understood enough to understand that Sobek was not a natural creature, but that he was created by humans. The question now was: how should he react?
For the dinosaurs, or at least for most of them, it didn’t make much difference whether or not their pack leader was created in a laboratory: after all, many of them came from zoos and farms, so it wasn’t strange that humans had interfered in their lives. Sobek was still the strongest among them and for this they respected him; nothing had changed from their point of view. However, no one expected that Sobek would take it well.
In fact, under normal circumstances Sobek would probably have been shocked, maybe even he would have fallen into depression. Imagine if suddenly everything you thought you knew about your family turned out to be wrong: your parents aren’t really your parents, your siblings aren’t really your siblings, and you... you’re not even a person, just a thing created in a laboratory. Anyone in Sobek’s place would have gone mad and overwhelmed by existential doubts.
But... the fact was, Sobek already knew he wasn’t a natural creature! 𝓯𝙧𝓮𝓮𝒘𝓮𝙗𝙣𝒐𝒗𝒆𝓵.𝓬𝓸𝒎
He didn’t belong in that world, at least not completely. He had been sent there by God. His soul belonged to another place. From the beginning he had always known that his life on Eden would last with only one purpose: to fulfill the mission that God had entrusted to him.
Since this, he wasn’t so upsetting to know that his current body had been created in a laboratory. He was a soul from another world made to be reincarnated by God herself in the body of a dinosaur; what difference did it make if he was born from the two spinosaurs who raised him, or if he was the result of a scientist’s vision and several stem cells? Absolutely nothing. He wasn’t shocked or mad, just surprised.
"So that’s what happened to Henry Wu... I was wondering when he would appear" he thought. "I guess this is the ’trick’ that God used to send me here on Eden and justify all the changes due to the System. The Mother Cell... if I remember correctly, in the Zoo series it was the cause of the increase in the intelligence of animals. I assume that here it is the same, even if a little different from the original"
He felt a little sorry for Henry Wu. Sobek had been a Jurassic Park fanatic in his previous life and knew that Henry Wu was not bad, although as the franchise continued the writers had tried to give him a more negative connotation. But from Sobek Wu’s point of view, he had never done anything wrong. The doctor did only his job: whether it was the creation of the Indoraptor or the Indoraptor, they had both been commissioned by others. Even the locusts that appeared in Jurassic World Dominion weren’t created by Wu with bad intentions. After all, if there was one thing that history taught, it was that scientists were rarely guilty of the misuse that humanity made of their creations: the task of science was only to research and discover, any use of the discoveries was a responsibility. exclusive to people, not scientists. People tended to blame the scientist who invented the dynamite or the atomic bomb, but both of these people had created such devices for very different things. Dynamite was made to work in mines and atomic energy was invented to... well, produce energy. It was humanity that later used these discoveries improperly.
Therefore, Sobek never felt like blaming Henry Wu for bringing the dinosaurs back to life, since his actions were always entrusted to him by others. He had never done anything of his own accord.
In that world, however, it seemed that Wu had instead chosen to abandon the role of secondary character to take an active part. And this time too, Sobek found himself agreeing with him.
Humanity, alone, could not save itself. She was too submissive to the power of capitalism and consumerism and was unable to think of another way of life, and those who tried were immediately crushed. Capitalism would never have been defeated by humans, and this would have led to an excessive exploitation of resources that would eventually degenerate into the extinction of almost all life on the planet. Something new was needed, a different form of life powerful enough to oppose all of humanity, to finally put a stop to the capitalist giants.
Wu’s plan, after all, wasn’t too far from God’s plan. In a way, Wu could be said to have played God’s game. And if even God agreed with Wu, what right did Sobek have to blame him?
Eventually, Sobek simply chose to stop thinking about it. That discovery changed nothing and Henry Wu was now dead. Sobek could only regret not having been able to meet him, but otherwise he had no reason to worry. Judging by Wu’s statements, a cure for the Mother Cell was impossible; so why be afraid? Sobek knew that if Wu said anything, it was because he was absolutely sure of it. Therefore Sobek did not run the risk of losing the System or that his intelligence regressed to a primitive stage.
He started to leave, but realized that the dinosaurs around him were staring intently. "Well? What’s up?"
The dinosaurs seemed not to know what to say. In the end it was Buck who spoke. "Um, pack leader... well, well... you are..."
“I heard, I’m not deaf. Apparently they are the creation of a scientist in the laboratory” Sobek snapped. He didn’t want to appear altered, but he had begun to fear that the dinosaurs would no longer see him the same way after that discovery. What if they no longer wanted him as pack leader? "Anyone have a problem with this?"
"What? No, of course!" Buck hastened to tell. "But... are you okay?"
At that point Sobek relaxed. The one of the dinosaurs wasn’t the will to rebel, but simple concern. Well, Sobek reflected, if he hadn’t remembered the encounter with God, he probably would have really freaked out... "I’m fine. That... is not a problem. I always knew I was different, after all. Now I know where my powers come from. For the rest, nothing changes"
The dinosaurs were surprised. He seemed to be taking it well. Maybe too good. "Doesn’t it really change anything, pack leader?" Carnopo asked. "Well... you were born in a laboratory... you don’t have a family..."
Sobek nodded. “It doesn’t matter if I was born naturally or if I am the fruit of the work of a human in a laboratory. Everything I have done since I came out of the egg, I did it because I wanted it. No matter what I am, I am master of my destiny. If we are here today, it is because you and I wanted it. And it’s not true that I don’t have a family. The spinosaurus that helped me get out of the egg, even though we are not related by blood, is my mother. The spinosaurus who taught me to fish, even though we are not blood bound, is my father. The spinosaurs I played with when I was a puppy, even if we are not related by blood, are my brothers and sisters. And my family doesn’t stop there. The whole herd is my family"
Sobek looked down at the dinosaurs surrounding him. “You, Buck, are my brother. You too, Carnopo, are my brother. Everyone in this pack is my brothers. This is the family that I have chosen. I don’t need another one. I will always protect the pack because it is my family and I will kill anyone who ever dares to hurt one of my brothers. This is the family that I have chosen for myself. I don’t care what I am, I never cared. Maybe I’m really just the result of one man’s genius and so many sleepless nights, but it doesn’t matter. This does not change my will. I decide my fate, and my family is here around me! Everything else is completely irrelevant!"
The dinosaurs puffed out their chests with pride and admiration for their pack leader. The situation had gone completely opposite to what they imagined: not only their pack leader had taken the news well, but he was also more resolute than ever! Who else, in his place, would have reacted that way? Who would have been so calm and thoughtful all along?
Their pack leader was indeed the wisest of all living creatures. There was no point in dwelling on the past and small things: what mattered was the present. To hell with the way he was born: his pack, his family, was what mattered to him.
The admiration of the dinosaurs towards Sobek grew even more. Now more than ever they felt he was someone worthy to follow. Just as he had long ago done with Buck, Carnopo, Al, Rambo and Old Li, Sobek had earned the loyalty of everyone present by simply saying what was on his mind. The true emotions of him, which no one could have taken from him.
At the conclusion of his short speech, the dinosaurs roared and bellowed to cheer him, and those who could even applauded.
However, Sobek’s mind was already focusing on something else. "That Jocelyne... it is clear that she is the mastermind behind Wu’s capture"
Sobek had had the human embassy spied while he was in the living room in Cartago, so he had learned of the video call that the girl was carrying out in secret with the characters of Zoo and Jurassic Park. Thanks to that, putting the pieces together wasn’t difficult. It was Jocelyne who set the events leading up to Wu’s capture in motion. And to testify this, immediately after the capture Jocelyne had made Robert Oz speak before the NMWA.
"That girl is truly a marvel. She has such intelligence, and she is so young..."
Sobek sincerely admired Jocelyne. She had been able to understand the way of thinking of the dinosaurs in less than two days and she had empathized with them, and even she had achieved a peace that made everyone agree. She had even managed to change the way Sobek had planned his future interaction with humanity. And now it seemed that the girl had not just been an ambassador, but that she had maneuvered a lot of things behind the scenes. Sobek could barely recognize her as the frightened child whom he had rescued in the forest two years before her.
"Now I cannot deny it anymore: it’s clear that our meeting was not casual at all. I was destined to meet her. God said she wouldn’t interfere, but apparentely she made our paths cross. We are bounded, but in what way? Maybe I was meant to save her, so that she could then save the world?"
It was unbelievable: he hadn’t flinched when he discovered that he had been created in a laboratory, but the mere existence of that girl was enough to give him existential doubts.
’What if she’s the real ’protagonist’, and I’m just a supporting character? Maybe God sent me here not to save the world, but to forge the path she should have followed. Clear the way, let’s say. Thanks to my existence, not only did she avoid a tragic fate, but now she too has become world famous, which will allow her to achieve many goals in the future. Maybe it will be thanks to her that humans and dinosaurs will learn to coexist... or maybe not? What if she was the supporting character instead, with the aim of showing me the right way forward, and I was the actual ’protagonist’? Oh, why not, maybe we are both ’protagonists’, and are we destined to save the world together? Aaaaah, I don’t understand anything anymore!’
Sobek shook his head violently and pushed those thoughts away. He would go mad if he thought about it too much. God loved to drive him crazy, it seemed to him. Or it was simply he who was confusing himself.
’Only time will tell who is who. At the moment, the best choice is to stay on the predetermined path. However, that Jocelyne could become very important in the future...’
Sobek began to think whether or not he should get Jocelyne on his side. She was intelligent, crafty and knew how to move in the human world better than he; not only that, but being a human herself, she could have been a fundamental piece on the board, since the masses would have more easily listened to their fellow man rather than dinosaurs.
In the future, the truce between humans and dinosaurs would surely deteriorate; it was inevitable, humans wouldn’t abandon the role of ’dominant species’ so easily. But if Sobek had had someone as intelligent and prayerful as Jocelyne Jersey on his side, then things would have gotten easier. Having an infiltrator among humans was not a bad idea.
Sobek wasn’t remain inactive all that time. Even if apparentely he hadn’t do anything, in reality he was thinking. Thinking to a new plan, one that remained in line with the peace treaty and permit to avoid the casualities at most as possible. And after so much thinking, he found a way.
Sobek didn’t understand why he didn’t think about that before. Now, that idea seemed obvious for him. After a brief period of bewilderment, he realized that this was probably due to evolution. Thinking back to his past actions, he realized that it was not only his body that had evolved, but also his brain.
When he was a mere Spinosaurus aegyptiacus, his actions were instinctive. By the time he moved into the Spinosaurus superior stage, he had become much more intelligent and calculating, and had also developed much more empathy. By the time he became Spinosaurus ingens, he had been able to design great plans. By the time he had moved on to the Spinosaurus imperator stage, he had become so intelligent that he could win a battle with minimal losses. And now that he had become Spinosaurus perfectus, his mind had managed to find a way to coexistence that did not involve the total submission of humans and that above all could be experienced with minimal battles and in sufficient time for him to see the work done.
But to start this plan, he needed the help of a human. And Jocelyne seemed to have all the qualifications needed to be that human. The more he studied her, the more she seemed to him a real ’protagonist’.
He would have thought carefully about this in the next few days. If he really managed to get the girl to his side of him, the benefits would have been great. The question was just how to do it.
