- Chapter 1: The Cat, The Thief, and The Demon Prince
The sickening yellow light of the Emperor’s magical array pulsed beneath the floorboards. The vacuum of energy in the Golden Hall was suffocating.
"Kitsune!" Akira yelled, stepping in front of me. The blue fire ignited around his hands, casting a terrifying glow over our table.
"Now, Yuki!" I screamed in my head.
Beneath the Emperor’s chair, Yuki’s turquoise eyes flashed in the dark. The ancient cat spirit braced himself to flip the leylines and completely short-circuit the Emperor’s core.
The Emperor threw his hands forward, his eyes manic and desperate.
But before his magic could even touch Akira, a piercing, hysterical scream shattered the tension in the room.
"TREASON! PROTECT HIS MAJESTY!"
It wasn’t a guard. It wasn’t me.
It was Lady Renge.
Crown Prince Ryu’s disgraced mother lunged out of her seat. She didn’t look like a defeated, pathetic woman anymore. She moved with terrifying speed, her faded gold silk robes whipping around her.
She pulled a handful of crimson onmyodo talismans from her sleeves and threw them directly into the vaulted ceiling of the Golden Hall.
BOOM!
The talismans exploded in a blinding flash of red light.
The magical flare ripped away the cloaking spells hiding in the rafters. Suddenly, dropping from the heavy cedar beams like massive, terrifying spiders, were a dozen men dressed entirely in black armor.
Shadow Assassins.
The Great Golden Hall erupted into absolute, deafening chaos. Nobles screamed, overturning tables and throwing their expensive plum wine everywhere as they scrambled for the doors.
The Emperor’s eyes went wide with genuine shock. He hadn’t planned this.
He had to make a split-second choice: continue his secret extraction ritual and let the assassins kill him, or cancel the trap and defend himself. 𝐟𝕣𝗲𝕖𝕨𝗲𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝗲𝚕.𝗰𝚘𝐦
Cursing under his breath, the Emperor violently snapped his hands back. The sickening yellow array beneath our feet instantly shattered into harmless sparks as he redirected all his power into a massive, golden defensive shield around his throne.
"He dropped the array!" Yuki complained in my head, sounding incredibly annoyed. "I was right about to fry him! Who interrupted my masterpiece?!"
"Never mind that!" I yelled out loud, drawing my heavy iron Tessen from my sash.
With a deafening SNIKT, the razor-sharp iron ribs snapped open.
Three assassins hit the floor right in front of our table, drawing curved daggers.
They didn’t even get to take a step.
Akira moved faster than human eyes could track. He didn’t even draw his katana. He just swept his arm in a wide arc. A localized shockwave of pure blue yokai fire exploded outward, slamming into the three assassins and throwing them completely across the room, where they crashed through a painted paper screen.
"Stay behind me," Akira ordered, his voice a lethal rumble.
"I have armor, remember?" I shot back, though I gladly let him take the front. I stood back-to-back with him, gripping my iron fan tight.
But the assassins weren’t aiming for us.
They were aiming directly for the Emperor’s golden shield. And they were aiming for Lady Renge.
"Guards!" Lady Renge shrieked, falling dramatically to her knees near the Emperor’s dais. She looked like the absolute picture of a fragile, devoted woman. "They are targeting the Son of Heaven!"
The Imperial Guards finally snapped out of their stupor. Dozens of armored men flooded into the hall, their spears clashing with the assassins’ daggers.
It was over in less than two minutes. The Imperial Mages threw binding spells, wrapping the remaining assassins in chains of glowing yellow light.
The Golden Hall was a complete disaster. Tables were smashed, food was everywhere, and the terrified nobles were cowering behind the pillars.
Akira let the blue fire fade from his hands, though he didn’t lower his guard. He glanced back at me, his amber eyes scanning me for injuries. I gave him a quick nod. I was completely fine.
The Emperor lowered his golden shield. He was breathing heavily, his pale face flushed with anger. His grand, secret trap to drain Akira had just been ruined in front of the entire court.
"Who," the Emperor hissed, his voice vibrating with lethal fury, "dares to bring assassins into my hall?"
Lady Renge stayed on her knees. She bowed her head so low it touched the messy floorboards.
"Your Majesty," Lady Renge wept, her voice trembling perfectly. "I beg your forgiveness for the disruption. But I could not sit by and watch the throne be usurped!"
"Explain yourself, Renge," the Emperor demanded.
Lady Renge lifted her head. She didn’t look at the Emperor. She slowly raised a single, trembling finger and pointed directly across the room.
She pointed right at Second Prince Jin, and his mother, Lady Kiku.
"It was them!" Renge cried out. "I intercepted a courier pigeon this afternoon! Lady Kiku and Prince Jin hired the Shadow Guild! They planned to assassinate the new Crown Prince and use the chaos to strike at you, Your Majesty, to take the throne for themselves!"
"What?!" Jin shrieked, his voice cracking wildly. His face went completely pale. "That is a lie! Father, she is lying!"
"Am I?" Renge sobbed, pulling a crumpled piece of parchment from her robes and holding it up. "The letter bears your personal seal, Prince Jin! And look at the assassins’ daggers! They carry the crest of Lady Kiku’s noble house!"
The Imperial Guard captain grabbed a dropped dagger from the floor. He inspected the hilt and looked up, his face grim. "She speaks the truth, Your Majesty. It is the Kiku crest."
Lady Kiku let out a horrified gasp, clutching her crimson silk robes. "No! I know nothing of this! She planted that crest! She is framing us because her own son was disgraced!"
The Emperor stared at Kiku and Jin.
He wasn’t stupid. He probably knew exactly what Renge had done. Renge had hired the assassins herself, slapped Kiku’s crest on the weapons, and staged this entire attack just so she could "save" the Emperor and destroy her rivals in one brilliant, ruthless move.
But the Emperor was trapped. He couldn’t expose Renge without exposing his own vulnerability, and half the court had just watched Renge play the devoted savior.
"Guards," the Emperor said, his voice cold and absolutely terrifying. "Arrest Second Prince Jin and Lady Kiku. Throw them in the deepest cells of the Imperial Dungeon. We will have a trial in the morning."
"Father, no! I am innocent! I am your son!" Jin screamed, thrashing wildly as four heavy guards grabbed his arms.
"You filthy snake!" Kiku shrieked at Renge as she was dragged away. "You set us up!"
Renge didn’t flinch. She just kept her head bowed, playing the perfect, fragile victim.
"Oh, she is good," Yuki’s voice echoed in my mind. The cat trotted out from under the dais, hopping gracefully back onto his silk cushion. "She just completely eliminated her competition and made the Emperor owe her a favor. I respect the hustle."
I slowly lowered my iron fan, snapping it shut.
I looked at Akira. He looked just as surprised as I was.
We had come to this banquet ready for a massive magical war. We were prepared to fight the Emperor and flip his leylines. Instead, we hadn’t had to do a single thing.
The capital vipers had just eaten each other.
The Emperor rubbed his temples, looking incredibly old and exhausted. His "Spiritual Rot" must be agonizing after using that defensive shield.
"Lady Renge," the Emperor said wearily. "You have done the Empire a great service today. Rise."
Renge stood up, keeping her eyes respectfully downcast. "I only live to serve the Sun Crest, Your Majesty."
"The banquet is over," the Emperor announced to the trembling court. "Clear the hall. Crown Prince Akira, we will... resume your blessing ceremony at a later, more secure date."
"Take your time, Uncle," Akira replied, a dark, mocking smirk finally breaking across his face. "My wife and I will be waiting."
Akira offered me his arm.
I slipped my iron fan back into my sash and took his arm. We turned our backs on the Emperor, on Lady Renge, and on the ruined Golden Hall, and walked out exactly the same way we came in.
Untouchable.
The moment we were outside in the cool night air, walking down the stone path toward the East Palace, I finally let out the massive breath I had been holding.
"Well," I said, looking up at Akira. "That was definitely not on my schedule."
Akira let out a low, rich chuckle, pulling me securely against his side. "The capital is a nest of snakes, Kitsune. If you leave them alone long enough, they will eventually bite themselves."
"Lady Renge framed Jin," I said, shaking my head in pure amazement. "She played the fragile white lotus perfectly. She knew the Emperor needed an excuse to look strong, and she handed him one."
"She is dangerous," Akira noted, his amber eyes scanning the dark gardens. "She bought the Emperor time, and she put herself back in his good graces. She will try to leverage this to get Ryu his title back."
"Let her try," I smiled, feeling the reassuring weight of the iron chainmail under my silk. "The Emperor still needs your core, which means he still has to come after me. But now, we have the upper hand. We know his secret, and we know exactly who the players are."
Yuki trotted ahead of us, his white tail held high in the air.
"Next time," the cat spirit grumbled telepathically, "I am frying him. Nobody interrupts my leyline flips. It is incredibly rude."
"Next time, Yuki," I promised, laughing quietly.
We survived the banquet. But the real game was just beginning.
