The sound at the entrance wasn’t chaotic. It wasn’t desperate. It was controlled, measured, and deliberate. Arata Kurozawa stood in the center of the shopping complex, his senses sharpening as the faint echoes of footsteps reached deeper into the interior. They weren’t rushing. They weren’t afraid.
Whoever was outside knew what they were doing, and that alone made them more dangerous than any infected they had faced so far. Reina had already taken position near the side entrance, her pistol angled carefully, minimizing exposure while maintaining a clear line of fire. Yuna leaned against a reinforced counter, her bat lowered but ready, her usual relaxed expression replaced with something far sharper. Airi moved instinctively toward the inner section, keeping low, her breathing uneven but controlled as she forced herself not to panic. The remaining members of Yuna’s group were tense, their earlier confidence gone, replaced by uncertainty.
Arata didn’t rush forward. He didn’t react impulsively. Instead, he listened. The rhythm of movement, the spacing between steps, the subtle shift of weight against the ground. Five, maybe six people. Coordinated. Armed. Not amateurs. "Positions," he said quietly. That single word carried authority, and without realizing it, everyone followed. Reina adjusted her stance. Yuna shifted to the opposite flank. Even the others took cover, though less confidently. Airi stayed behind the central structure, gripping the edge tightly as she watched.
The footsteps stopped just outside the entrance, and for a moment, everything went silent. Then a voice broke through. "We know you’re inside." The tone wasn’t aggressive, but it wasn’t friendly either. It was testing. Arata stepped forward just enough to be seen, his figure partially obscured by shadow. "Then you already know this place is taken," he replied calmly. There was a pause, followed by a second voice, sharper this time. "Taken doesn’t mean it belongs to you." Yuna let out a faint breath that almost resembled a laugh. Arata didn’t react. "It does now," he said.
That was the turning point. Movement shifted outside. Positions changed. The tension tightened instantly. Reina whispered, "They’re spreading." Arata nodded slightly. "Let them." The voice outside spoke again. "We don’t need to fight. We can share this space." Arata didn’t hesitate. "No." Silence followed, heavier this time. Then came the response. "Then you’ve chosen conflict." Arata’s expression didn’t change. "No. You have."
The attack came immediately. A small metal canister rolled through the entrance, hissing violently as thick smoke began to spread across the floor. Visibility dropped in seconds. Reina fired without hesitation, the gunshot cutting sharply through the smoke. Shadows rushed forward. Fast. Coordinated. Arata moved instead of retreating. "Hold positions," he ordered, his voice calm even as the fight began. The first attacker emerged low and fast, but Arata was already moving. Burst Step activated, his body surging forward in a sudden burst of speed that closed the distance instantly. The pipe connected with the attacker’s arm before he could react, knocking his weapon aside. A second strike followed, precise and controlled, dropping him instantly.
Gunfire echoed again as Reina fired twice, forcing two more attackers to slow down. Yuna moved in from the side, her bat slamming into another with enough force to send him crashing backward. The fight wasn’t chaotic. It was controlled, but intense. Arata pulled back slightly after his first strike, resetting his position instead of chasing blindly. "Don’t overextend," he said. Reina adjusted immediately. Yuna shifted angles instead of charging forward recklessly. The attackers regrouped quickly, their discipline clear. "Two down," someone muttered outside. "Adjust."
A second push came, faster and more coordinated. Two attackers entered from different angles, trying to break their formation. Reina’s shots forced one back. Yuna intercepted another, her movements sharper now, less playful and more lethal. But one slipped through. He rushed straight toward Airi. She froze for a fraction of a second. Fear. Instinct. Uncertainty. It was enough to be dangerous. Arata moved instantly. Burst Step again. He appeared between them, blocking the incoming strike and countering without hesitation. The pipe struck cleanly, dropping the attacker before he could react. Arata didn’t even look back. "Stay behind," he said. Airi nodded quickly, forcing herself to stay steady.
The fight continued, but the balance had already begun to shift. The attackers were skilled, but Arata’s side had something they didn’t—control. Reina’s precision, Yuna’s adaptability, and Arata’s command slowly pushed them back. One attacker tried to retreat, but Arata intercepted him before he could escape. Another attempted to rush Reina and was stopped mid-motion. Every movement became tighter, cleaner, more efficient. The smoke cleared gradually, and with it came clarity. This wasn’t a chaotic fight anymore. It was domination.
Then, suddenly, it stopped. The remaining attackers pulled back, retreating outside the entrance. The interior fell silent again, but the tension remained. Arata stepped forward just enough to be seen again. "You’re losing," he said calmly. A figure stepped into view. Taller than the others. Composed. His eyes weren’t angry. They were calculating. "You’re stronger than expected," he said. Arata didn’t respond. "You built this fast. You fight well. You lead." Another pause. Then the offer came. "Join us." 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶
Reina’s grip tightened slightly. Yuna’s expression turned unreadable. Airi looked confused. Arata answered without hesitation. "No." The man tilted his head slightly. "You didn’t even think about it." Arata’s voice remained calm. "I did." "And?" "You’re not worth it."
Silence followed, heavier than before. The man’s expression didn’t change, but his eyes hardened slightly. "...Then this isn’t over," he said. Arata met his gaze directly. "It is." Another pause, then the man stepped back. "Fall back." No arguments. No hesitation. They left.
The threat disappeared as quickly as it had come. The complex fell silent again. Reina lowered her gun slowly. Yuna exhaled, tension leaving her shoulders. Airi sank down slightly, her body finally reacting to the stress. Arata stood still for a moment longer, then a faint notification appeared.

[REWARD: BONUS EXP + MINOR STAT BOOST]
"They’ll come back," Reina said. "Yes," Arata replied. Yuna glanced toward the entrance. "Next time, they won’t test us." Arata nodded slightly. "No. Next time, they’ll try to take everything." Airi looked at him. "...What do we do?" Arata’s eyes hardened, his voice calm but decisive. "We don’t wait."
Reina understood immediately. "...We strike first." Yuna smiled slowly. "Now that’s interesting." Arata turned toward the outside world, his expression unchanged. This wasn’t just survival anymore. It wasn’t just defense. It was control. "First rule," he said quietly, "control the ground...or lose everything."
