- Chapter 1: The Day the World Broke
The moment the girl stood up without struggle, the entire illusion shattered, not gradually but instantly, like a fragile layer breaking under pressure it was never meant to hold. Arata Kurozawa didn’t step forward again, didn’t hesitate, didn’t question—he simply adjusted his stance, his eyes locking onto her with a clarity that erased any doubt about what she was. Airi froze for half a second, not out of fear but out of disbelief, because just moments ago she had been ready to help, ready to believe. That hesitation could have been fatal. Yuna noticed it immediately. "...Don’t fall for that again," she said sharply, her voice cutting through the tension as she stepped slightly in front of Airi, placing herself between her and the girl without even thinking about it.
The "survivor" tilted her head slightly, her expression calm, almost curious, as if observing how they reacted rather than preparing to attack. "...Interesting," she said softly. "You recognized it quickly." Reina didn’t respond verbally, but her weapon was already raised, her aim steady, her finger ready. Miyu’s voice came low and precise. "...Behavior mismatch confirmed. This is not a standard infected." Kaede’s voice followed from above, sharper than before. "...Multiple movements. They’re closing in."
The ground shifted again, Not one direction, All directions.
Shadows moved between buildings, behind broken walls, above collapsed structures. Infected. Not rushing blindly, not screaming, not chaotic. They were positioning. Surrounding. Coordinated.
"...Yeah," Yuna muttered, her grin returning but sharper now. "This is definitely planned."
The girl smiled slightly, her eyes moving from one of them to another as if memorizing their faces. "...You’re different from the others," she said. "Stronger. Faster. More... interesting." Airi frowned slightly, her earlier hesitation gone, replaced with focus. "...Who are you?" she asked.
The girl didn’t answer immediately, Instead, she took a step forward, Not aggressive, Not defensive.
Just—Confident.
"...A messenger," she said, That word alone changed the atmosphere.
Reina’s eyes narrowed. "From what?" Miyu added, "...Or from who?"
The girl’s smile widened slightly.
"...You’ll see," she said, And then—Everything moved at once.
The infected surged forward, not in a chaotic wave but in structured layers, the front line rushing to engage while others moved to cut off escape routes. Arata reacted instantly, stepping forward to meet the first line head-on, his strike landing cleanly against the nearest infected, breaking its momentum completely. Yuna followed immediately, her bat swinging wide, clearing space with raw force, her movements aggressive but controlled. "Stay tight!" she said, her voice carrying command now, not just energy.
Reina fired from behind them, her shots precise, cutting down targets that slipped through the initial defense. Miyu adjusted positioning on the fly, her voice sharp. "...Left flank tightening. Don’t let them close distance." Kaede fired from above, her shots picking off targets before they could fully engage, her angle shifting constantly to maintain coverage.
Airi didn’t freeze this time, She moved, Not forward blindly, But into position.
She stayed just behind Arata, watching his movements, adjusting her own timing, stepping in only when necessary, disrupting incoming infected just enough to create openings.
The "messenger" didn’t join the fight, She stood back, Watching , Observing, Learning, Arata noticed, Of course he did.
"She’s not attacking," he said.
Miyu responded immediately. "...She doesn’t need to. She’s controlling the flow."
That made her more dangerous than everything else around them.
Yuna pushed forward harder, her strikes faster now, clearing space aggressively as if trying to break through the surrounding formation instead of just holding position. "...Then we break her," she said.
But it wasn’t that simple.
Every time they pushed in one direction, the infected adjusted, closing gaps, redirecting pressure, forcing them back toward the center.
"...It’s her," Reina said. "She’s coordinating them."
Kaede’s voice came again, sharper. "...She’s not just controlling. She’s predicting movement."
That was worse, Much worse, Because that meant—She was thinking.
The messenger’s gaze shifted toward Arata again, her expression softening slightly, almost like interest. "...You’re the center," she said quietly. "Everything revolves around you."
Airi’s eyes narrowed slightly at that, Yuna’s grip tightened.
"...Yeah?" Yuna replied, her tone dropping. "Then come try him yourself."
The girl didn’t move, Didn’t attack, She just smiled.
"...Not yet," she said, That answer wasn’t reassuring, It was a promise, Arata stepped forward, Directly toward her. 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮
The infected reacted instantly, shifting to block his path, but Yuna moved with him this time, not letting him go alone. "You’re not doing that solo," she said, her voice firm. Reina adjusted her firing angle to support them, while Miyu shifted positions to maintain structural integrity of their formation.
Airi hesitated for a fraction of a second.
Then followed, Not behind, Beside, That didn’t go unnoticed.
Yuna glanced at her briefly, then smirked slightly. "...You’re getting bold," she said.
Airi didn’t look at her.
"...I’m not staying behind anymore," she replied.
That answer was simple, But strong.
Kaede saw it from above, And didn’t comment.
But her next shot came faster, More precise.
The group pushed forward together, breaking through the layered infected with coordinated force, Arata leading, Yuna supporting, Reina covering, Airi disrupting, and Kaede eliminating threats before they could fully engage.
They reached her, The messenger, She didn’t move, Didn’t retreat, Didn’t defend.
"...Good," she said softly.
Arata struck.
The impact landed—But not like before, Her body shifted.
Not dodging, Not blocking, Something else.
Like her form wasn’t fully—There.
The strike passed through partially, disrupting her shape but not connecting fully.
Airi’s eyes widened. "...What...?"
Miyu’s voice cut sharply. "...Not physical. Partial manifestation."
Yuna clicked her tongue. "...Great. That’s new."
The messenger tilted her head slightly, her form stabilizing again. "...You can touch me," she said. "But not completely."
That made things complicated.
Very complicated.
Reina fired immediately, her shot passing through partially as well, causing distortion but not full damage. Kaede’s bullet followed, producing the same effect.
"...She’s not fully here," Kaede said.
Arata stepped forward again.
This time—Slower, Observing, The messenger watched him closely.
"...You understand," she said.
"Yes," he replied.
Simple.
Then he moved again, Different angle, Different timing.
The strike landed—And connected more, Not fully, But more than before.
The messenger’s expression shifted slightly.
"...Interesting," she said.
Miyu spoke quickly. "...Her manifestation fluctuates. Timing affects interaction."
Yuna grinned. "...So we hit her when she’s ’real’."
Airi nodded slightly. "...Then we watch her movement pattern."
Reina adjusted her aim. "Then we force consistency."
Kaede aligned her shot again. "...And break her when she stabilizes."
Everything aligned again, Not perfectly, But enough, The pressure shifted.
From defense—To attack, The messenger’s smile didn’t disappear, But it changed.
Slightly.
"...Yes," she said quietly. "That’s better."
And for the first time—She moved.
Not stepping back, Not retreating, Forward, Toward them.
The real fight—Had just begun.
And this time—It wasn’t just survival, It was understanding the enemy,Before the enemy fully understood them.
