- Chapter 1: The Day the World Broke
The pressure didn’t break—it deepened. The moment the new wave of infected began advancing, it was clear this wasn’t a simple continuation of the previous assault. The movement was layered, controlled, and far more disciplined than before. Arata Kurozawa stood at the front line, his posture steady, his gaze fixed on the approaching formation as it slowly closed the distance. The air felt heavier now, not just from numbers, but from intent. This was no longer testing. This was escalation.
Reina raised her weapon, her breathing controlled, her eyes tracking the formation with precision. "...Multiple layers," she said quietly. Miyu’s voice came from above, sharper than before. "Front line is disposable. Second line is maintaining spacing. Third line holding reserve." Yuna exhaled slowly, her grip tightening around her bat, her grin faint but present. "...Finally," she muttered. "Something worth breaking."
Airi stood just behind them, her heart steady but faster than usual, her eyes locked forward. She didn’t feel like she was behind anymore. She felt like she was part of the line.
The infected stopped again, Just outside engagement range, Waiting.
The silence stretched.
Then—The sound came.
Louder than before, Deeper.
A command, The formation surged, Not chaotic, Not reckless, Controlled aggression.
"Now," Arata said.
The base responded instantly.
Reina fired, her shots cutting into the front line, creating openings before the infected could fully compress. Yuna moved immediately after, her strikes heavy and precise, breaking through the first layer with controlled force. Arata stepped forward into the center, his movement efficient, cutting down threats before they could stabilize.
But this time—The wave didn’t break, It adapted.
The second line shifted forward smoothly, filling gaps before they could widen, maintaining pressure without losing structure. The third line adjusted behind them, reinforcing weak points before they fully formed.
Miyu’s voice cut in sharply. "They’re maintaining rotation—don’t let them stabilize. Arata, disrupt center. Yuna, don’t overextend. Reina, angle pressure to the right."
Arata moved faster, More aggressive.
He cut directly into the center again, forcing disruption instead of holding position. Yuna followed, her strikes heavier, targeting structure instead of individual kills. Reina adjusted her fire, creating pressure points that forced the formation to compress unevenly.
For a moment—It worked, The rhythm broke.
But not completely, Because something else was coming.
Airi felt it first, A shift, Subtle, Different.
"...Something’s wrong," she said softly.
Yuna didn’t look back. "...Yeah," she replied. "I feel it too."
Then—It happened.
A figure broke through the second line, Faster than the rest, Stronger, A new type.
It moved directly toward the right flank—Toward Airi.
Reina reacted instantly, firing to intercept, but the creature adjusted mid-motion, avoiding the trajectory with unnatural precision. Yuna tried to shift position, but the distance was too wide for immediate interception.
Airi froze—For half a second, The creature closed in.
Its arm rising—Strike incoming—And then—A sharp sound cut through the air.
Clean, Precise.
The creature’s head snapped back, Its body dropped instantly.
Dead, Silence hit Just for a moment.
Not from the battlefield—But from something else.
Confusion.
Reina’s eyes narrowed immediately. "...That wasn’t my shot." Yuna turned slightly, her expression shifting. "...Yeah. Mine neither." Miyu’s voice came down, sharper than before. "...Long-range. High precision. External source."
Airi’s breath caught slightly as she looked at the fallen creature.
Then—Another sound.
Sharp and Controlled.
Another infected dropped from the second line, Then another.
Each shot perfectly placed, Each kill instant.
The formation wavered, Not from their pressure—But from something unseen.
Yuna’s grin returned slowly.
"...Now this is interesting."
Reina adjusted her stance, scanning the distance instead of the immediate fight. "Find the source." Miyu’s voice followed. "...High ground. Far range. Likely elevated structure."
Arata didn’t speak, But his gaze shifted, Searching.
And then—He saw it, Far beyond the street.
On the edge of a collapsed building, A figure.
Still Calm and Watching.
Another shot rang out, Another infected dropped.
The pressure on the base eased—not because the wave stopped, but because something was cutting through it from distance with terrifying precision.
Yuna let out a low breath. "...She’s not missing."
Reina nodded slightly. "Professional level." Miyu added, "...No wasted shots. No hesitation."
Airi stared.
Because something about that figure—Felt different.
Not desperate, Not struggling, Controlled.
Like this was normal.
The wave began to break faster now, the combined pressure from both sides disrupting the infected’s coordination completely. Without stable structure, their movement faltered, their spacing collapsed, and within minutes—
They retreated Again.
But this time—Not cleanly, Not controlled, They were pushed back.
The street fell silent, Heavy, Real.
Yuna lowered her weapon slightly, her grin still present. "...Well," she said. "That saved time." Reina didn’t relax. Her gaze remained fixed on the distant figure. "We’re not alone anymore." Miyu’s voice lowered slightly. "...And not by chance."
Airi took a small step forward.
"...Who is she?" she asked softly.
No one answered.
Because at that moment—The figure moved.
Slowly, Deliberately.
Stepping off the edge of the broken structure and disappearing from sight.
Then—A few seconds later—Footsteps, Light, Controlled, Approaching.
Yuna’s grip tightened again, not aggressive—but ready, Reina raised her weapon slightly, Miyu watched without speaking, Arata remained still, Waiting.
The figure emerged from the shadows of the street.
Closer now , Clear.
A girl , Around their age.
Long black hair moving slightly with the wind, her posture straight, her steps calm and unhurried. A rifle rested against her shoulder, held with the ease of someone who had used it countless times. Her expression wasn’t hostile.
But it wasn’t friendly either.
Her eyes—Sharp, Cold, Observing.
She stopped a few steps away, Close enough to see clearly.
Far enough to maintain distance, Silence stretched, No one spoke first.
Until—She did.
"You fight too loudly," she said calmly. Her voice was soft—but carried clearly. "That’s why they keep finding you."
Yuna smirked faintly. "...And you shoot too cleanly," she replied. "That’s why you’re still alive."
The girl didn’t react to that, Her gaze shifted slightly.
Landing on Arata, Studying, Measuring.
"...You’re the one leading them," she said.
Not a question, A statement, Arata met her gaze, Didn’t deny it, Didn’t confirm it, Just watched.
Airi stepped slightly closer, her voice quieter. "...You saved us," she said.
The girl’s eyes flicked toward her, Then away.
"I removed a threat," she replied. "Don’t misunderstand it."
Cold and Direct.
Yuna’s grin widened slightly. "...Yeah," she said. "I like her."
Reina didn’t lower her guard. "Name," she said.
The girl didn’t answer immediately.
Then—"Kaede," she said.
Simple, No extra words.
Miyu stepped slightly forward, her eyes sharper now. "...You’ve been observing this area," she said.
Kaede didn’t deny it.
"...Long enough," she replied, Silence settled again.
Airi looked between them, Then at Arata.
Because this moment—Mattered. 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂
More than the fight, More than the wave.
Because this girl—Was not weak.
Not lost, Not desperate.
She was something else, Something dangerous, Something valuable.
And something—Unpredictable, Arata finally spoke.
"What do you want?" he asked, Kaede’s gaze returned to him.
"...To see if you’re worth staying near," she said.
Yuna let out a low laugh, Reina’s eyes narrowed slightly, Miyu watched even closer, Airi felt her chest tighten slightly—Not from fear.
But from something else, Something new, Because this wasn’t just a survivor.
This was someone who wouldn’t follow, Wouldn’t submit, Wouldn’t fit easily.
And that—Would change everything, The wind moved through the broken street Carrying silence with it.
As two forces stood facing each other, Not enemies, Not allies, Not yet.
And somewhere beyond them—Something deeper in the city—Was still watching.
And now—It had more to observe than before.
Because the balance—Had just shifted.
