- Chapter 1: The Day the World Broke
The base didn’t return to normal after that moment. It functioned, it moved, it operated—but something beneath it had shifted. Not in structure. Not in strength. In emotion. Subtle, quiet, but present. Arata Kurozawa stood near the elevated section of the complex again, his gaze directed outward toward the broken streets, but his awareness wasn’t limited to the outside anymore. It extended behind him, across every movement, every interaction, every unspoken tension that had begun forming inside his growing territory. The fight against the evolved infected had changed the rules. The moment between Yuna and Airi had changed the balance.
Below him, activity continued, but it wasn’t the same as before. It was sharper. More aware. Reina maintained control over defensive arrangements, her instructions precise and efficient, but even she was quieter than usual, as if conserving not just energy—but attention. Miyu stood not far from her, observing everything without interfering, her eyes moving between people more than positions. She wasn’t studying the base anymore. She was studying dynamics. Yuna remained near the entrance, leaning casually against a reinforced barrier, her bat resting against her shoulder, but the casual posture was misleading. Her eyes were sharper now, more focused, more calculating. Airi stayed within the medical area, but her attention drifted constantly, pulled toward Arata without her realizing it. Hana noticed that too, though she said nothing.
Arata didn’t ignore any of it.
He processed it.
Because in a world like this, emotional shifts were just another form of instability—and instability could break everything if left unchecked.
A faint sound from outside drew his attention again, but it wasn’t immediate danger. Just movement in the distance. Scattered infected. No coordinated threat. Not yet. He turned slightly, stepping down from the elevated platform and moving toward the center of the base. The group adjusted subtly to his presence, not consciously—but instinctively.
"We don’t stay passive tonight," he said.
That was enough to pull full attention.
Reina turned immediately. "You want to move out?" Yuna straightened slightly, interest returning instantly. "Finally." Miyu tilted her head, watching him closely. Airi looked uncertain but didn’t speak.
Arata nodded once. "Short-range sweep. We control the area around the base. No blind zones."
Reina responded first. "That reduces surprise attacks." Yuna added, "And gives us targets." Miyu said quietly, "And information."
All correct.
Arata continued. "We move in teams. No one alone."
His eyes moved across them.
"Reina with me. Yuna takes outer flank. Miyu observes mid-range movement. Airi stays. Hana assists. Daichi and Kento hold base."
The assignments were immediate, Clear.
But one reaction broke the flow, "...I can go," Airi said , The words were soft, But they carried, Everyone looked at her.
Yuna’s expression changed first, Slightly, Sharply.
Reina didn’t react outwardly, but her eyes shifted.
Miyu watched carefully, Arata looked directly at Airi. "No."
No hesitation, No room for argument.
Airi’s hands tightened slightly. "...I won’t slow you down," she said. "I can help." Yuna let out a quiet breath, something between a laugh and a scoff. "Help?" she said lightly. "Doing what? Healing zombies?" Airi flinched slightly but didn’t back down. "...Supporting. Treating injuries. That matters."
Yuna stepped forward now, her tone still casual—but sharper underneath. "It matters after the fight. Not during."
Airi looked at her, something in her expression shifting—not confidence, not strength—but refusal to back down completely. "...And if someone gets hurt during it?" she asked.
Silence, Brief , But real.
Yuna’s smile didn’t return this time. "...Then they deal with it," she replied.
"That’s not efficient," Miyu said suddenly.
All eyes shifted to her.
She stepped forward slightly, her voice calm, analytical. "Injury reduces combat output. Delayed treatment increases risk. A support presence improves survival rate."
Yuna looked at her, eyebrow raising slightly. "...You’re taking her side?" Miyu shook her head. "I’m stating a fact."
Reina spoke next. "But she can’t keep up in open movement," she said. "That’s also a fact."
That ended it, Not emotionally, Logically.
Arata made the final call , "Airi stays," he said.
No change, No compromise.
Airi lowered her gaze slightly, her lips pressing together, but she didn’t argue again. "...Understood," she said quietly.
But something stayed, Unresolved.
Yuna noticed it, And this time—She didn’t push further.
She just turned away, picking up her bat again, "...Let’s move," she said.
The team left shortly after.
Arata in front, Reina beside him, Yuna moving wider along the flank.
Miyu slightly behind, watching everything.
The outside world felt colder now. Not physically—but in presence. The streets were darker, shadows deeper, movement less predictable. They moved carefully, not rushing, not wasting energy. Every step was controlled. Every sound measured.
"Left side," Reina said quietly, Two infected.
Slow, Irrelevant.
Yuna moved first, eliminating them quickly with clean, efficient strikes.
No hesitation, No wasted motion.
"Clear," she said, They continued, The sweep wasn’t about fighting, It was about mapping.
Understanding, Control.
Miyu spoke softly after a few minutes. "Movement patterns changed." Arata didn’t look at her. "Explain." "They’re not clustering randomly anymore," she said. "They’re spreading."
Yuna smirked slightly. "That’s worse." Reina nodded. "That means more coverage." Arata’s expression didn’t change. "That means intelligence is spreading."
They all understood what that implied, More evolved types, More coordination, More danger.
A distant sound echoed suddenly, A scream.
Human, Short, Cut off.
The group stopped instantly.
Yuna’s eyes lit slightly. "That’s close." Reina raised her gun. "Too close." Miyu narrowed her gaze toward the direction of the sound. "Not alone," she said.
Arata moved, No hesitation,They followed.
The scene revealed itself quickly, A small group of survivors, Cornered.
Three evolved infected surrounding them , Not attacking immediately, Waiting, Testing.
The same pattern.
"They’re hunting again," Yuna said quietly.
Arata didn’t respond, He moved forward.
"Engage," he said.
The fight began instantly, Fast, Sharp, Controlled.
But this time—It wasn’t just about winning.
It was about proving, To themselves, To each other, And to the ones watching, Arata moved first, Shadow Step.
Closing distance instantly.
Reina followed with precision fire.
Yuna entered from the flank, aggressive and direct.
Miyu observed—but adjusted positioning through small verbal cues.
The survivors inside the trap watched in shock.
Because this wasn’t survival.
This was domination.
And in the middle of it—Yuna glanced once.
Back toward the base, Not physically but Mentally.
Toward Airi.
Then forward again, Her strike landed harder.
Sharper, More force than needed.
Because this fight—Wasn’t just against the infected.
It was against something else too, Something quieter, Something growing , Something dangerous, And it had just begun.
