- Chapter 1: The Day the World Broke
The moment the entity moved faster than anyone could properly track, the battlefield stopped being just a fight and became something far more dangerous—a test. Not of strength alone, but of control, decision-making, and the ability to hold everything together when facing something clearly beyond their current level. Arata Kurozawa steadied himself after being pushed back, his breathing controlled, his gaze locked onto the entity without even a hint of panic. That alone separated him from the others. He wasn’t shocked. He wasn’t overwhelmed. He was calculating. The entity stood only a few steps away now, its posture relaxed, almost casual, as if the exchange that had just happened meant nothing to it. "...You didn’t fall," it said, its tone calm, observant. "Good."
Yuna stepped forward instantly, placing herself slightly ahead of Airi without making it obvious, her bat resting against her shoulder but ready to swing at any moment. "...You talk too much," she said, though her voice wasn’t playful anymore. It was sharp. Focused. Reina adjusted her aim, her breathing steady, but even she wasn’t firing immediately this time. Miyu’s mind was already racing ahead, processing the difference in speed, reaction time, and presence. "...Direct confrontation is disadvantageous," she said quickly. "We need layered pressure and forced reaction delays." Kaede remained above, completely still, her rifle trained on the entity, waiting for a single mistake, even if it was just one fraction of a second.
Airi stood close again, not hiding behind anyone but clearly aware of her position. Her arm still hurt slightly from the earlier impact, but she ignored it. Her eyes were on Arata. Not the enemy. Him. Waiting. Trusting his next move.
The entity noticed, Of course it did. "...They follow you well," it said, Arata didn’t respond, He stepped forward instead. That was his answer. Not reckless, Not emotional, Intentional.
"We don’t win by reacting," he said calmly. "We control the fight."
Yuna’s grin returned slightly at that. "...Now that sounds like you," she muttered.
The entity tilted its head slightly. "...Control?" it repeated. "...Show me."
That was the opening.Arata moved first—but not alone.
"Split pressure," he said quietly.Everyone reacted instantly.
Yuna rushed in from the left, aggressive, loud, drawing attention. Reina fired from behind, not aiming to hit but to force movement. Kaede shifted her position above, changing her angle at the same time. Airi stepped in just behind Arata, not leading, but not holding back either.
The entity moved, But this time—It had to choose.
It stepped toward Yuna, avoiding Reina’s shot, then shifted to block Arata’s incoming strike—but that delay, that single moment of decision-making—Was forced.
Miyu saw it instantly. "...There," she said.
Arata adjusted mid-motion, his strike changing angle at the last second, landing not where the entity expected, but where it had just shifted from. The impact connected—not fully overpowering, but enough to push it back half a step.
Half a step.
That was the first real sign.
Yuna didn’t waste it. Her bat came down immediately, aiming for the same point, forcing the entity to block instead of counter. Reina fired again, this time closer to a real shot, making the entity shift its stance again.
"...Better," the entity said.
But this time—It wasn’t relaxed.
Airi moved in next, her strike not aimed to damage but to disrupt balance again, and though it didn’t fully connect, it forced the entity to move again.
Kaede fired.
This time—The bullet grazed, Not blocked, Not avoided completely.
A slight mark appeared on the entity’s shoulder.
Silence.
For a fraction of a second.
Yuna’s grin widened. "...Yeah," she said. "You bleed."
The entity looked at its shoulder briefly, then back at them.
"...Interesting," it said, But Arata didn’t stop.
"Don’t give it time," he said, The pressure increased immediately.
Faster, Tighter, More aggressive.
They didn’t attack randomly, They forced decisions, Every move had purpose, Every strike had follow-up, Every second counted.
The entity responded faster now, its movements sharper, its counters more direct, but for the first time—It wasn’t controlling everything.
It was reacting too, And that meant—They were closing the gap.
But then—It changed again. Not gradually, Instantly.
Its presence condensed Just like before, But stronger.
"...You’ve improved," it said.
Then—It disappeared again.
Arata reacted instantly this time, his body shifting before the attack even came, but the speed was still overwhelming. The entity reappeared behind him, its strike aimed cleanly, but this time—Yuna intercepted.
Her bat clashed against the attack, the impact pushing her back hard, her feet scraping against the ground.
"...Not happening," she said through gritted teeth.
For a moment—She held it.
Arata turned instantly, striking at the same time, forcing the entity to disengage instead of following through.
Yuna exhaled sharply, her arms shaking slightly from the impact.
"...Damn," she muttered. "...that hurt."
Airi stepped closer immediately. "...Are you okay?" she asked.
Yuna glanced at her, For a second—There was tension.
Then—"...I’m fine," Yuna said, But her tone wasn’t soft, Not cold either.
Just—Controlled, Arata noticed everything, But didn’t comment.
Because now—He understood.
This fight wasn’t about overpowering the entity.
Not yet, It was about proving something, To it.
And to themselves, The system flickered again.
[ SYSTEM RESPONSE: HOST PERFORMANCE EXCEEDING EXPECTATIONS ]
[ NEW FUNCTION UNLOCKING... ]
Miyu’s eyes widened slightly. "...Now?"
Arata didn’t look away, "Keep pressure," he said.
The fight resumed instantly, faster than before, their coordination sharper, their movements more intentional, their roles clearer than ever. Yuna took frontline aggression, Reina controlled space, Kaede dominated positioning, Airi disrupted flow, and Arata—Controlled everything. Not by force, But by decision.
The entity moved again, faster, stronger, but now—It was facing something different, Not just survivors, A unit.
And for the first time—Its expression changed, Not curiosity, Not calm, Something else, Something closer to—Interest.
"...Good," it said, And this time—It stepped forward first.
Because now—It wasn’t testing them anymore, It was starting to take them seriously, And that—Was far more dangerous than anything before.
