- Chapter 1: The Day the World Broke
The moment the new group stepped inside, the atmosphere of the base shifted. It wasn’t just the addition of more people—it was the weight they carried with them. Exhaustion, fear, desperation. It spread quietly, like a different kind of infection. Arata Kurozawa watched them without moving, his gaze sharp, analyzing every detail. Two men, one injured but still conscious, trying to stay alert despite obvious fatigue. Two girls, both younger than Reina and Yuna, but different from each other in presence alone. One was supporting the injured man, her expression tense but determined, while the other stood slightly behind, her eyes moving rapidly across the environment, taking everything in. Not just scared—aware.
Airi moved first, as expected. She rushed forward, guiding the injured girl and the man toward the medical area she had set up. "Sit here—careful," she said, her voice steady despite the situation. She immediately began checking the injury, her hands moving with growing confidence. Reina stayed near the entrance, her pistol still lowered but ready, making sure no one else followed them in. Yuna leaned casually against a nearby pillar, her bat resting on her shoulder, but her eyes were focused, watching the newcomers like a predator deciding whether something was worth the effort.
Arata stepped forward slowly. "Names," he said. His tone wasn’t aggressive, but it wasn’t friendly either. It was direct. The girl who had been supporting the injured man looked up first. "...Hana," she said quietly. "Hana Kimura." The other girl hesitated for a moment before speaking. "...Miyu. Miyu Sakamoto." One of the men spoke next, forcing his voice steady. "Daichi." The last one nodded slightly. "Kento."
Arata’s eyes moved across each of them again, locking the information in place. "You were being chased?" he asked. Hana nodded immediately. "Yes... a group... they attacked us." Reina’s gaze sharpened slightly at that. "How many?" she asked. Daichi answered this time. "Six... maybe more. We didn’t stay long enough to count." Yuna let out a faint breath that almost sounded amused. "Seems like everyone’s making groups now."
Arata didn’t respond to that. Instead, he focused on Miyu. She hadn’t spoken much, but her eyes hadn’t stopped moving. Observing exits. Positions. People. Smart. "You saw them clearly?" he asked. Miyu met his gaze for a brief second before answering. "Yes." "Organized?" Arata continued. "...Not like you," she said, her tone honest. "But not random either." That answer mattered.
Airi spoke up from the side. "He’s going to be fine," she said, referring to the injured man. "The wound looks bad, but it’s not fatal. He just needs rest." Hana visibly relaxed at that, her shoulders dropping slightly. "Thank you..." she whispered. Airi gave a small nod and continued her work.
Reina finally stepped away from the entrance, but she didn’t put her weapon away. "We can’t just let anyone stay," she said quietly, her eyes on Arata. Yuna shrugged lightly. "Why not? More people, more manpower." Reina shook her head slightly. "More people, more risk." Both of them looked at Arata.
He didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he walked a slow circle around the group, not threatening, but deliberate. Measuring posture, reactions, tension. Fear was there—but not hostility. Weakness—but not uselessness. Potential.
"We don’t keep dead weight," he said finally.
The words landed hard.
Hana stiffened slightly. Miyu didn’t react outwardly, but her eyes sharpened. Daichi clenched his jaw, while Kento looked away for a moment.
Yuna smiled faintly. "Fair."
Reina didn’t argue.
Arata stopped in front of them. "You stay, you contribute. You slow us down, you leave. Simple."
Silence followed.
Then Hana nodded. "...We understand."
Miyu followed a second later. "We won’t be a burden."
Arata held her gaze for a moment longer, then turned away. "Good."
The decision was made, Not kindness, Not charity, Utility.
Airi exhaled softly, relief visible in her expression, though she didn’t say anything. She already understood how things worked now.
The group began to settle. Not comfortably—but enough. Hana stayed close to Airi, helping where she could, her movements careful but willing. Miyu didn’t sit. She walked slowly through the base, observing everything quietly, her eyes taking in every detail—the barricades, the supply placement, the positioning of people. Reina noticed. Of course she did.
"She’s sharp," Reina said quietly to Arata.
"Yes," he replied.
"Dangerous?"
"Potentially."
Yuna joined them, smirking slightly. "Or useful."
Arata didn’t disagree.
Time passed slowly, but the base didn’t feel unstable. It felt...active. Alive. More people meant more movement, more noise, but also more capability. Supplies were reorganized again to account for the increase. Positions were reassigned. Arata made sure everyone had a role, even if small.
Daichi and Kento were assigned to reinforce the back exit. Simple task. Limited risk. Hana assisted Airi fully, turning the medical corner into something more efficient. Miyu...was different.
She approached Arata directly.
"You’re the leader," she said.
Not a question, A statement.
Arata looked at her. "Yes."
She nodded slightly, as if confirming something in her own mind. "...You fight differently," she continued. "You don’t hesitate."
"That’s why I’m alive," he replied.
A brief pause.
Then she asked, "What’s your goal?"
Reina glanced at her slightly. Yuna looked interested.
Arata answered without hesitation.
"Control."
The word settled heavily between them.
Miyu didn’t look surprised.
"...Then I’ll stay," she said.
Arata studied her for a moment longer.
Not fear, Not desperation, Choice.
Interesting.
"Then prove it," he said.
She nodded once and stepped back.
Yuna chuckled lightly. "You’re collecting interesting people."
Arata didn’t respond.
Because he knew—This wasn’t random anymore.
This was growth, Structured, Directed, Intentional.
As the sun began to lower slightly outside, the base felt different than it had that morning. Stronger. More stable. Not safe—but controlled.
But control never lasted forever.
Because outside, in the broken world, others were watching.
Learning, Adapting, Just like him.
And sooner or later—They would come.
Stronger, Prepared, Hungry.
And when that happened—This wouldn’t be a test.
It would be war.
Arata stood near the entrance once more, his gaze fixed on the fading light beyond the barricade.
Calm, Cold and Certain.
Let them come.
