- Chapter 1: The Day the World Broke
The moment the Hunter landed, the battlefield inside the base shifted from controlled preparation into immediate chaos, but not the kind of chaos that broke formation—instead, it was the kind that tested whether everything they had prepared would actually hold under real pressure. Arata Kurozawa stood at the center exactly where they had planned, his body steady, his eyes locked onto the creature as it adjusted its stance after being intercepted mid-air. The Hunter’s movements were completely different from anything they had faced before. No wasted motion, no blind aggression, no mindless rushing. It watched. Calculated. Adapted. And now—it was acting.
Yuna didn’t wait. She stepped forward again with a grin that carried both excitement and challenge, her bat swinging with full force toward the Hunter’s side, not as a reckless attack but as a test of its reaction speed. The Hunter moved instantly, its body twisting at an unnatural angle that allowed the strike to barely graze past it instead of landing cleanly. "Yeah, you’re annoying," Yuna muttered, already shifting her stance for the next move. Reina fired from the side, her shot perfectly timed to intersect the Hunter’s predicted path, but the creature adjusted mid-motion again, lowering its body and letting the bullet pass just above its shoulder. "It’s reading angles," Reina said calmly, already repositioning. Miyu’s voice came sharp and fast. "Not just reading—predicting sequences. Don’t repeat patterns." That warning changed everything instantly.
Kaede fired from above again, her shot aimed not where the Hunter was, but where it would be if it followed its previous movement logic. This time, the bullet struck cleanly against its upper arm, drawing a sharp reaction. The Hunter stepped back slightly, its head tilting as if reassessing the threat level. "Good," Yuna said, her grin widening. "So you can be hit." Arata moved at the same moment, closing the distance with controlled speed, his strike aimed directly at the Hunter’s core. The creature reacted immediately, blocking with its elongated arm, but the force pushed it back a step. That was important. Not overwhelming strength—but enough to disrupt balance.
Airi watched from just behind, her heart racing but her focus locked. She wasn’t frozen anymore. She wasn’t helpless. But this fight was different. This wasn’t something you could just react to. You had to think ahead. And that was exactly what the Hunter was doing.
The creature moved again, this time targeting the side—not directly at Arata, but toward Airi.
Too fast.
Reina fired instantly, forcing it to redirect mid-motion, while Yuna cut in from the side, her bat slamming toward its path, forcing it to retreat instead of advancing. "Hey," Yuna said sharply, her voice carrying a dangerous edge now. "You don’t get to pick her." Airi blinked slightly at that, surprised by the tone more than the words.
The Hunter didn’t respond emotionally—but it adjusted.
Its focus shifted again.
Back to Arata.
Miyu spoke quickly. "Confirmed. It probes weakest link to destabilize formation." Airi frowned slightly. "...I’m the weak link?" she muttered under her breath. Yuna didn’t even look back. "For now," she said bluntly. "So don’t be." The words were harsh—but not meant to hurt. Airi understood that.
Kaede’s next shot came down fast, forcing the Hunter to move again, but this time it didn’t retreat far. It stayed within range, circling slightly, its head tilting again as if processing everything at once. "...It’s adapting faster now," Miyu said. Reina nodded. "It’s already adjusted to our initial formation." Yuna smirked. "Then we change it again."
Arata moved first this time, stepping forward more aggressively than before, forcing the Hunter into a direct engagement instead of allowing it to control distance. The creature reacted immediately, its movements sharper, faster, its strikes now more precise instead of exploratory. It lunged toward Arata with a sudden burst of speed, its elongated arm striking forward with lethal intent. Arata blocked, but the impact still pushed him back half a step.
That alone showed the difference, It wasn’t just smart, It was strong enough to match.
Yuna jumped in immediately, her strike aimed at its exposed side, forcing it to break momentum. Reina fired again, coordinating perfectly, while Kaede adjusted her angle above, looking for another predictive shot.
And in the middle of all this—Airi moved, Not forward, Not blindly, But into position.
She grabbed a loose metal rod nearby, her grip tightening as she watched the Hunter’s movement pattern, remembering what Miyu had said. Don’t repeat patterns. That meant—break expectations. 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
The Hunter moved Toward Arata.
But this time—Airi stepped in, Not attacking directly, Just enough.
Just at the right moment.
The Hunter’s movement shifted slightly to avoid her—And that was the mistake.
Yuna’s bat came down instantly, striking its side with full force, the impact landing cleanly this time. "Nice," Yuna said, a sharp grin appearing again. Airi blinked slightly, surprised. "...I didn’t even hit it," she said. Yuna snorted lightly. "You don’t need to. Just mess with it."
Reina fired immediately after, her shot hitting the same area, while Kaede’s bullet followed a split second later, deepening the damage. The Hunter staggered slightly—just enough to show that the combined pressure was working.
"...Good," Miyu said quietly. "Unpredictable variables disrupt its processing."
The Hunter stepped back again.
But this time—It didn’t immediately re-engage, It watched, Its head tilting again.
Recalculating.
Yuna rolled her shoulder, her grin returning fully now. "...What, thinking again?" she said. "Go ahead. We’ll just hit you harder next time."
Airi couldn’t help it, She laughed slightly, Soft, Nervous, But real.
Yuna glanced back briefly, raising an eyebrow. "...What?" Airi shook her head quickly. "Nothing," she said, but a small smile stayed on her face.
Kaede noticed.
"...You’re smiling in the middle of a fight," she said from above, her tone neutral.
Airi blinked. "...Is that bad?" Kaede didn’t answer immediately.
"...No," she said finally. "It means you’re not panicking."
Yuna smirked. "...She’s learning," she said, Airi’s smile grew just a little.
Then—The Hunter moved again, Faster, More aggressive, No more testing.
It lunged directly at Arata, its strike sharper, more focused than before.
Arata met it head-on.
This time—He didn’t step back.
The impact collided directly, both forces meeting in the center, neither giving ground immediately. The Hunter’s strength was real—but Arata’s control was stronger.
Yuna moved in from the side again, Reina aligned her shot.
Kaede fired—And the Hunter adjusted—But not enough.
The bullet struck.
Its movement faltered for a split second, That was all they needed.
Arata struck, Direct, Hard.
The Hunter was forced back this time, its footing breaking slightly as it slid across the ground.
"...Now we’re getting somewhere," Yuna said, her grin sharp.
But the Hunter didn’t fall, Didn’t collapse, Didn’t lose control, It recovered, Faster than expected.
"...Yeah," Yuna added. "Still annoying."
Airi stepped closer to Arata now, her voice quieter. "...Are you okay?" she asked. Arata nodded once. "I’m fine." Simple. Direct.
Yuna glanced at that interaction, Just for a second, Then looked away.
"...Focus," she said, but her tone had shifted slightly.
Kaede noticed that too, Of course she did.
"...Distraction is dangerous," Kaede said calmly.
Yuna smirked slightly. "...Then don’t get distracted," she replied.
Airi blinked, realizing what that meant, her face warming just slightly. "...I wasn’t—" she started, then stopped, not finishing the sentence.
Reina didn’t react to any of it, Miyu ignored it completely, Because the Hunter moved again.
This time—Different, It didn’t lunge, It didn’t strike, It circled, Faster, Wider.
As if searching for something.
"...What is it doing?" Airi asked.
Miyu’s voice dropped slightly. "...Looking for a pattern break."
That was bad, Very bad.
Because that meant—It was learning how to counter their unpredictability.
Arata stepped forward again.
"We finish this now," he said, No hesitation.
Yuna’s grin returned instantly. "...Finally."
Reina adjusted her aim, Kaede aligned her shot.
Airi steadied herself, The Hunter stopped For a moment.
Then—It smiled again And charged, This time—Faster than before.
More precise than before, More dangerous than before.
