I Built a Safe Zone in the Dead World

The moment the gap opened,the man collapsed forward,his body slamming against the floor as if all the strength holding him upright had vanished at once.His breathing was ragged,uneven,his hands shaking as he tried to crawl further inside.But Arata Kurozawa didn’t look at him.His eyes were already locked on the entrance.Because they were coming.

Fast.

Multiple shadows slipped through the gap almost instantly,their movements low,fluid,and unnaturally synchronized.This wasn’t like the single evolved infected from before.This was different.A group.A pack.Their bodies were similar—lean,elongated—but their behavior was coordinated,like they were connected by something unseen.The moment they entered,the atmosphere shifted violently.

"Positions!"Arata’s voice cut through the tension like a blade.

Reina fired first.BANG.BANG.Two precise shots forced the leading infected to adjust mid-motion,but they didn’t stop.They split.Instead of charging directly,they spread out,trying to flank.Yuna moved instantly to intercept,her bat swinging in a wide arc that forced one back with a heavy impact.CRACK.It staggered,but didn’t fall.

"They’re faster!"she muttered,already shifting again.

Arata moved.

Shadow Step.

His body blurred forward,covering distance in a way that felt almost unnatural even to those watching.He appeared between two of the infected before they could fully commit,striking one with a clean,controlled blow that snapped its movement.The second reacted instantly,lunging toward his side.

But Arata was already gone, Gone from where it expected him to be.

He reappeared behind it.

CRACK.

The strike landed across its spine,sending it crashing into the ground.

"Don’t let them surround us!"Reina shouted,adjusting her aim and firing again.BANG.One of the infected twisted unnaturally to avoid a direct hit,then darted toward her position.Yuna intercepted mid-path,her bat colliding with its head with brutal force.

THUD.

It slid across the floor but recovered almost instantly.

"They don’t stay down!"Daichi yelled from the back.

"Then don’t give them time!"Yuna snapped back.

Miyu’s voice cut in,calm but sharp."They’re coordinating.Mirroring our movement."

Arata heard it, Understood it and Adapted instantly.

"They’re reading us,"he said."Break pattern."

Reina shifted her firing rhythm immediately,spacing her shots irregularly.Yuna stopped committing to full swings,instead using shorter,controlled strikes.Airi and Hana stayed back,but their eyes followed everything,learning,processing.

The pack hesitated for a second.

That was enough, Arata moved again, Shadow Step.

Faster this time, Cleaner.

He didn’t go for a direct kill.Instead,he disrupted.He struck one,then vanished,appearing near another,forcing them to react constantly instead of coordinating.Their formation broke.

"Now!"he said.

Reina fired.BANG.Direct hit to the head.One dropped.

Yuna followed, CRACK, A second fell,its body hitting the ground harder this time.

But the remaining ones adapted quickly.

Too quickly.

One of them suddenly changed direction mid-fight,ignoring Arata completely and rushing toward the back.

Toward Airi, She froze.

Just for a moment, But this time—She didn’t stay frozen.

She moved back instantly,grabbing Hana and pulling her aside.

The infected lunged—And Reina’s shot cut through the space.

BANG.

It hit, Not perfectly, But enough to slow it.

Yuna closed in from the side.

CRACK.

The creature went down.

Airi’s breathing was fast,but she didn’t panic, She stayed on her feet, That mattered, Arata noticed, Then shifted focus again.

Only two left, But these two were different, They weren’t rushing anymore, They were watching, Adapting and Learning.

Just like the first one.

Miyu spoke softly,"They’re changing strategy."

Arata nodded slightly, "Then we end it fast."

He stepped forward, Slow, Deliberate.

Inviting them.

The two infected moved in response,not rushing,but circling,looking for openings.

Predators, But so was he.

They lunged at the same time From different angles, Perfect coordination.

But—Too predictable.

Arata vanished from their path,reappearing between them,his movement cutting their timing apart.One collided slightly with the other for a fraction of a second.

That was enough.

His strike landed on the first, Reina fired immediately.

BANG.

The second staggered, Yuna finished it.

CRACK.

Silence fell again, Heavy and real .

All movement stopped, The bodies of the pack lay scattered across the floor,still,unnatural even in death.

No one spoke for a few seconds.

Then—

Yuna exhaled slowly,"Okay...that was insane."

Reina lowered her gun,but her eyes stayed sharp."They were working together."

Miyu nodded."Like a unit.Not random."

Airi leaned slightly against the wall,her breathing finally slowing.Hana stayed beside her,steadying herself too.

Daichi looked around,"If more of these come..."

Arata answered before he finished.

"They will."

Silence, Not fear but Understanding.

He looked at the bodies,then at the entrance,

Then at the group.

"They’re evolving faster,"he said."So we do the same."

Reina nodded, Yuna smirked, Miyu watched quietly.

Airi straightened slightly, Because now—It wasn’t just survival, It wasn’t just control, It was escalation, And they were already in it.

Arata stepped toward the entrance once more,his gaze fixed on the dark outside.

Calm, Cold, and Certain.

"Next time,"he said quietly,"we hunt first."

No one disagreed.
