He quickly strapped the C4 he’d prepared earlier onto her body.

"From now on, you just answer my questions. Otherwise I send you straight to God." Butcher held the detonator in one hand and a grenade in the other.

Madeline, mouth now taped shut, didn’t want to provoke the madman. She nodded.

"Good." Butcher ripped the tape off and got ready to ask his first question.

But none of this went unnoticed.

Homelander had been watching the entire time.

Two hours earlier, Madeline had casually mentioned Becca’s miscarriage, which completely contradicted what Vogelbaum had told him. So after the gala, he followed her home to get the full truth.

He never expected to walk into such a perfect show.

Cradling Madeline’s baby in his arms, Homelander stepped into view with a smile. "What do you want to ask? Where Becca went? Or how Madeline can kill me?"

Fuck... Butcher’s heart jumped, but he controlled himself ASAP.

"Keep your voice down. Don’t scare the baby," Homelander said with a gentle smile.

Homelander ignored her completely and kept talking to Butcher. "You’re very calm. Your heart is beating fast, but that’s not fear. That’s pure rage."

"Is it because of your lovely wife Becca? Alright, let’s cut the bullshit. Brother, this wasn’t my fault. She came on to me. You know how it is — any man would have a hard time resisting that ass..."

According to Homelander, he and Becca had been mutually into it. No force involved.

Butcher didn’t believe a single word. In his mind, his wife would never do something like that.

"By the way, I should tell you — we were really compatible in certain areas," Homelander said with a loud, cheerful laugh.

"Can you please stop talking and just take the baby away?" Madeline tried again.

This time Homelander completely snapped.

"Shut the fuck up!!"

He pointed at her and roared.

Then he leaned his face right in front of hers and said in a low, dangerous voice, "You promised me you wouldn’t hide anything. You promised! Honestly, before you lied, you should’ve gotten your story straight with Vogelbaum. Your versions were so close."

He made a small gesture with his fingers. "Just a few details off. So I went back and made Vogelbaum tell me the real truth."

Then Homelander pressed his forehead against Madeline’s.

"I’m really sorry... I’m so sorry. I shouldn’t have hidden it from you. Please give me another chance. Can you please take Teddy upstairs?"

Even with C4 strapped all over her body, Madeline hadn’t panicked. But now her voice cracked with tears.

Anyone who truly knew Homelander understood just how furious he was right now. She was scared. Actually scared.

"Have you ever actually cared about me? Or was I just useful for your job? You care more about that fucking kid than me. I’m giving you one chance. Tell me the truth. Why did you do it?"

"Just tell me, and I’ll walk away right now."

Homelander stared into her eyes with fake tenderness.

"I was scared... I was scared of you."

Her answer made him pause. "What?"

"I was afraid. I was afraid that child would steal your love away from me." Madeline’s voice trembled.

"Thank you."

Homelander pressed his forehead against hers again and kissed her deeply. When he pulled back, his eyes were glowing red.

The next second, two powerful lasers burned straight through Madeline’s eyes, melting half her face into charred meat.

Seeing Madeline killed by Homelander’s own hand, Butcher knew he could no longer use her to control the supe. In complete despair, he pressed the detonator.

Boom!

A massive explosion ripped through the villa. Flames swallowed everything in an instant as a dark gray mushroom cloud rose into the sky.

The moment the bomb went off, Butcher blacked out.

When he woke up again, he was surrounded by birdsong and the smell of flowers. At first he thought he’d died and gone to heaven. Then Homelander appeared in front of him.

"Doesn’t look like heaven if I’m seeing your ugly face," Butcher muttered. He knew Homelander had saved him.

"Hey buddy, wake up. You’ve been out for a while. You can thank me later."

Homelander smiled and waved him over. "Come on. You’re gonna love this."

Butcher, still groggy, forced himself up to see what the psychotic bastard was playing at.

What he saw made his blood run cold.

Becca was standing there, alive.

As the two of them locked eyes, Homelander gently stroked the cheek of the young boy beside him and said softly, "Your mom never told you, but your real father is Homelander. You’re my son."

The way Homelander touched the boy’s face was deliberate. It was his way of telling Butcher that all these years of revenge had been one big fucking joke.

It was a masterclass in psychological destruction.

The next day.

The moment Ivan arrived at Vought Tower for work, he heard the news: Madeline had been killed in a bombing.

Even though he had expected it, he still put on a convincing shocked expression. "What!?"

"They’re saying it was terrorists. It’s already the top headline in New York. Look at these photos from the scene. Her whole villa got turned into rubble." Baruch barged into Ivan’s office first thing in the morning, eager to share the juicy gossip.

Ivan took the phone and glanced at the pictures. Just as Baruch said, the villa had been completely destroyed.

"Any idea who did it?" Ivan asked, handing the phone back before opening his computer to search for news about the explosion.

Baruch shook his head. "The details are still under investigation. But they found a baby at the scene. The kid was less than a kilometer from the blast and didn’t have a scratch on him."

"A baby?" Ivan didn’t believe for a second that Homelander would save Madeline’s child. He’d killed the mother — why spare the son?

"His name’s Teddy. Madeline’s kid. Poor thing, losing his mom so young."

Baruch sighed.

"At least some orphanage is willing to take him in. Silver lining, I guess."

"Yeah.."
