"Alright.. Let’s meet and talk. I’ll send you the address." Ivan hung up the phone.

Half an hour later, the two met inside a quiet coffee shop.

The second Hughie saw Ivan, he looked like a drowning man who’d just grabbed a lifeline.

Before Ivan could even ask, Hughie spilled everything that had happened.

"That’s the situation. Butcher is a complete piece of shit who doesn’t give a fuck if the rest of us live or die."

"Hmm. So you came to me because you want me to help rescue Frenchie and the others," Ivan said, stirring his coffee slowly with a silver spoon.

"Yeah. I already tried Starlight, but she turned me down."

Hughie was wearing a mask even now. Getting recognized was too dangerous. Just a few hours ago he’d barely escaped a close call by ducking into a women’s bathroom and climbing out the window.

"Sorry, I don’t have time," Ivan said flatly, shaking his head.

"Please. You’re the only one who can help me right now."

Hughie begged.

"Relax. I didn’t say I wouldn’t help." Ivan stopped stirring and looked at him. "I’ve got something that can help you save Frenchie and the rest. But it’ll cost you."

"What is it?" Hughie frowned. He was so broke he could barely afford government cheese. If Ivan wanted money, he was screwed.

"Compound VI."

Ivan pulled out a syringe filled with red liquid from his jacket. Under the overhead lights, the liquid gave off a deep, seductive crimson glow. "This stuff will give you serious power in a short time. Unlike Compound V, the damage to your body is almost nothing."

"Compound VI?" Hughie took the syringe and examined it carefully. The liquid inside wasn’t as clear as Compound V. If anything, it looked like blood — but brighter, closer to pigeon’s blood ruby.

"What’s the difference between this and Compound V?" After what happened with Kimiko, Hughie was extremely wary of anything Vought-related. He didn’t want to become another lab rat.

"Big difference. At least this won’t fry your brain. Of course there are side effects. You’ll lose all memory of what happens while you’re powered up, and the abilities disappear once it wears off. Friendly warning — the shelf life on this is short. You should inject it now." Ivan picked up his coffee and waited for Hughie to decide.

Hughie hesitated hard, teeth clenched. "There’s really no other way?"

Ivan shook his head calmly.

"You swear it won’t fuck up my body after the effects wear off?" Hughie kept struggling until Ivan finished his entire cup of coffee. Finally, he made up his mind. "Fine. I’ll trust you this once."

Hughie stabbed the needle into his arm and pushed the red liquid in. As it entered his bloodstream, he could feel his body changing.

"Is this my power?" After pulling out the syringe, Hughie watched in awe as a sharp blood spike slowly pushed out from the palm of his hand. At the same time, he felt an insane amount of strength flooding through him. The feeling was so good it was almost addictive.

Snap!

Ivan flicked his fingers. The moment the sound hit, Hughie’s eyes went glassy. Ivan led him out of the coffee shop.

Once they reached a blind corner with no cameras, Ivan patted Hughie on the shoulder. His face melted like warm wax. When he stepped out again, he looked exactly like Hughie.

He headed straight to the motel where the group had been staying. Before he could even pull out the key, a team of tactical agents swarmed him and took him down. Ivan didn’t resist. Soon he was thrown into a CIA black site prison.

"You okay? Any broken bones?" Frenchie asked, leaning close.

Ivan, now without the hood, looked at the two men and shook his head. "I’m fine."

"What about Butcher? Did they get him too?" Frenchie asked anxiously.

"No. He’s still chasing his plan. But I came to get you guys out."

"You came here on purpose? Without Butcher?" Mother’s Milk looked shocked. Both men were clearly touched. Frenchie even tried to kiss him, but Ivan dodged it.

"Listen up. Someone gave me a shot called Compound VI. I already injected it. I can get us out of here right now." Ivan opened his palm. A sharp red blade slowly pushed out from his skin.

"Oh my God, you injected Compound V? You fucking idiot!" Frenchie clutched his head in despair. "You shouldn’t have come for us. This sacrifice is too much. Even if we get out, we’ll never forgive ourselves. Hughie, you really shouldn’t have done this."

But Mother’s Milk looked confused. "Wait, did I hear that right? You said Compound VI? What the hell is that?"

He looked completely lost. Was there even such a thing as Compound VI? Some new Vought product?

"The mysterious guy gave it to me. He said it doesn’t fuck up your body. The only downside is you lose the memories of everything you do while it’s active. We don’t have time to worry about that now. Let’s get you out." Ivan’s acting was spot-on. He mimicked Hughie’s expressions perfectly. And even if he slipped up, the others would just blame it on the drug’s side effects.

"That guy just keeps getting more mysterious," Mother’s Milk muttered.

While he was talking, Ivan sliced through the cell door lock with the blood blade. "It’s open."

"This shit works that well?" Frenchie grabbed the iron door and pushed it open with almost no effort.

"Fuck. I think I need some of that too."

But they didn’t notice that their movements had already triggered the motion sensors.

Following Frenchie’s lead, the three of them started searching for Kimiko’s cell. Since this was a CIA black site, security wasn’t as tight as a real prison. From the look of the place, it seemed like an abandoned underground garage or some old CIA training facility.

Soon enough, they found her behind a thick glass wall, strapped to an operating table.

"Stop staring and let’s get her out," Ivan said, unable to watch the two lovebirds making eyes at each other through the glass any longer.

Bang!

He punched the reinforced glass. The spot he hit instantly spider-webbed with cracks.

Meanwhile, the guards had already received the alarm and reported the escape to Homelander.

Homelander didn’t seem to care much. He was busy talking with A-Train. Several vials of Compound V were lined up on the table between them.

"You sure you want to inject all of that at once?" Homelander lounged back on the couch, watching A-Train slam vial after vial into his veins. "My eyes can already see your pathetic little heart screaming in pain."

"I don’t have a choice. I can’t be replaced," A-Train growled through gritted teeth. His eyes were bloodshot as hell.

"Butcher’s little crew broke out of prison. Go bring them back."

Homelander only bothered giving the warning because he was in a decent mood. Truth was, he couldn’t give less of a fuck whether A-Train lived or died.

Hey guys,

I just wanted to say... I literally survived a terrifying close call on the road today.

Was dropping my friend home when two trucks came around a turn. One driver decided to overtake on the wrong side, straight into my lane, headlights blinding me completely.

Everything happened in a second.

My mind racing, dodging left, then swerving right to miss a pole, momentum carrying us through. I ended up laying the bike down on the side once it slowed, but somehow both me and my friend walked away without a single injury.

I used to laugh at those who called bikes death machines, but not anymore.

I’m still shaking as I type this. Adrenaline as I’ve never felt. Really grateful to be okay. Life is fragile... hug your people, and please stay safe out there.
