"Yes," Malakai agreed. "You’ve basically just proven Patro’s claim."
Eve swallowed. "That’s exactly what he wanted—the outcome he was after." She added, "But it would have made no difference."
"What do you mean?"
"My silence would have ended with the very same result. And if I had countered his claims, it would be a breach of our deal. It was either I kept silent or agreed his claims were true. There is truly no way out of the situation. It was still going to be the same result in the end."
Her teeth dug into her lip. "Though, I strangely feel better. Now, they can go to hell. I’m tired of their curiosity. If this will make them shut up, then so be it." She looked at him. "I’m sorry, though... I’m sure, I’m dragging you deeper into this mess."
Malakai purely stared at her.
He blinked, glanced half a breath at her, and looked away, low puffs of breath fleeing from him. His canines lengthened against his will and black pooled in his eyes, though he was still left in control over his wolf.
"Malakai...?"
Her scent made his mouth water. He wanted to devour her in a way no normal alpha would want to. He ached to do it, all from head to toe and he’d never felt this way towards any omega before.
Was it because she was his mate? Malakai was unsure.
But if there was anything he was becoming rather more aware of, it was the fact that Eve belonged to him and no one.
Yes... This omega...
...is his.
"Malakai?" She touched his shoulder and he snapped his attention toward her. She paused for a second before tucking her hair behind her ear, an apologetic look on her face. "I didn’t ruin anything for you by lashing out at the reporters, did I? If I did, then I’m—"
His sudden grab on her shoulder, left her eyes blown wide at him. She didn’t get the chance to utter a word before he pulled her into what she would call a hug. But the problem was that he was squeezing tight, all while having his face buried in her neck.
Her lashes batted frantically and she breathed out. "Malakai, w-wait, you’re....squeezing me."
He wasn’t listening, or maybe couldn’t even hear her at that very moment.
His canines dragged into her neck, earning a hiss from her and she grasped at his arms.
"W-wait, Malakai, I-I can’t breathe..."
Malakai snapped back away from her too quickly, shoved the car door open, getting out. The man blinked rapidly and roughly brushed his fingers through his hair, the sound of his racing heartbeat pounding in his chest.
One of the security guards in front of the company approached at his call.
"Mr Basti?"
"I’m going to need you to drive my wife home for me."
"Ye?" The security seemed taken aback.
"Is there a problem—"
"Malakai?"
He glanced at Eve who’d rounded the car over to him. "Aren’t you coming with me?" she asked.
He shook his head. "No. I’ve got something important to get to. He’ll take you home. You can—"
"Are you angry with me?" she inquired, unconvinced he had something to do. "You were fine just a few moments ago and now you don’t want to go home with me."
Malakai rubbed his temple, an almost pained look on his face. "Just go with him."
"Malakai—"
"Please!" he grounded out. "Listen to me this once and go with him. I’ll see you later when I come back."
She was angry. It was written all over her face as she stormed off to get back into the car. The security bowed and Malakai didn’t move until he made sure the mad had driven off to take her home.
A deep breath fled his mouth and he plucked his phone out of his pocket, calling Caius.
[What is it now? I’m in the middle of a proje—]
"Meet me at the bar in my hotel right now at silverpine street, Caius. It’s important, please."
[Malakai—]
"Please!"
There was silence for a few seconds on the other side of the phone. [Okay. I’ll be there. Just give me twenty minutes]
He ended the call and threw his head back to stare at the almost dark sky.
....
Caius walked into an empty bar in the hotel and paused at the sight of Malakai who was seated on the stool at the counter. The only person within the bar except him was the bartender serving him...drinks?
Malakai didn’t even drink much. Maybe occasionally, but never casually.
What was wrong with him?
He walked over and took a seat on the stool next to him. "Malakai? What’s wrong with you?"
Malakai looked at him. His pupils were dilated. "I’ve got to talk to you about something."
"Important?"
"Yeah." He nodded.
Caius couldn’t understand what was wrong with him. He seemed even more anxious. Malakai didn’t get anxious—that would be funny. What could even make him anxious?
He glanced at the bartender and dismissed him with a wave of his fingers.
The beta bartender nodded with a bow and left the bar, leaving the two to each other.
"What’s wrong with you?"
"Something is wrong with me, Caius," Malakai said.
"Which is?"
"Eve..." He held his breath. "I looked at her and...there was this sort of..."
Caius lifted his brows. "I can’t know what’s wrong if you don’t explain to me, Malakai."
Malakai combed his fingers through his hair, seeming stressed out. "I was in control of my wolf, but I felt out of control."
"Felt out of control? What do you mean?"
"Eve belongs to me, but deep down, I know she doesn’t fully belong to me. Not yet..." He tightened his grip around the glass of alcohol on the counter.
"Malakai—"
"I looked at her today and for some reason, I wanted to...possess her."
Caius blinked. "Possess her? But you do that? That’s one of your abilities—"
"Not that kind of possession, Caius," he bit. "Haven’t you ever looked at something and wanted to own it—t-to possess it whether it wanted it or not?"
"That’s..." Caius’s brows constricted. "But she’s your mate. She’s already yours. Why...feel this way?"
