Eve paced back and forth in the room, teeth biting her finger. She would stop suddenly, look at the phone at the video of Patro, and breathe out.
Her eyes darted around the room and she bit further into her thumb.
Was she really going to sit and allow Patro to win this one?
Most definitely. She had no choice. Her father’s life mattered the most here. She needed to first get him out of Patro’s hand, and once she did, she could finally do what she—
"Eve."
She snapped her head up to the sound of Malakai’s voice. The man walked into the room, and set aside the bag of what he’d gotten for her.
"You saw it, didn’t you?"
Eve nodded at him. "I did."
"What are you going—" The phone in his pocket rang and he glanced at the ID on the screen.
Kael.
"What is it, Kael?"
[Boss, Mr. Ronan here is impatient about the meeting. He’s threatening to back out if you don’t come to the company."
The look on Malakai’s face darkened.
"Give the phone to him."
[Yes sir]
A few seconds and a deeper voice sounded from the other side of the phone.
[Mr. Basti—]
"Listen to me, Ronan, you are making a deal with me, not the other way around. You are the one that needs something from me, so it’s either you be patient, or leave. Do you understand me? There are other companies that want the deal more than you do, so if you won’t be patient, you’ll be kicked out."
The man laughed nervously. [O-of course. You um...t-take your time Mr. Basti. I’ll call in another day]
Malakai hung up and threw his head back to stare at the ceiling for a few moments. He breathed out the anger he felt and tilted his head to meet Eve’s gaze.
She was peering at him.
"You can be really scary," she said to him.
He cocked a brow. "Do I scare you?"
"No." Her lips curled subtly into a smile and she watched him approach her until his figure towered over hers. She craned her head back to stare into his eyes. 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦
"What are you going to do?"
Malakai asked.
She responded, "We’re going to get my father back, it’s the deal we made. If he breaks out of it, I’ll crush him."
He gazed at her and suddenly grabbed her hand. "Come with me."
"Where are we going?"
He didn’t answer but walked her to the elevator that took them downstairs.
Eve blinked, finding herself standing in a shooting range, built a distance at the back of the mansion. Five shooting targets, five blocks for support, and a gun placed on each of them.
"What...are we doing?" She looked at him.
Malakai unbuttoned the first few buttons of his white shirt and moved over to the first block. He picked up the gun.
"I want you to learn how to shoot, doll. Defence." He glanced at her.
She furrowed her brows at him. "Why? I have you."
"You have me, yes, but I’m not always going to be there."
She advanced toward him and lowered her eyes to the gun he held.
"Patro is a dangerous man, that’s one thing I’ll admit and it makes me worried for you," he continued. "You never know what situation you could find yourself in. I need you to be able to defend yourself, Eve."
Malakai grabbed the cap set aside and wore his before handing the other to her.
Eve proceeded to wrap her hair into a quick ponytail and wore the cap. She covered and protected her ears with the earmuff he’d given her.
"I’ve never shot before," she spoke as loud as she could.
A grin emerged on the man’s face.
"Watch me." He cocked the gun, aimed, and pulled the trigger. The bullet slammed directly into the bullseye. A perfect hit.
She didn’t seem surprised. He’d nearly shot her the first time they met.
Her gaze subconsciously drifted from his hair left in a man bun, down to the carve of his muscles, the way they flexed under the fitted shirt he wore.
Patro may be a handsome man, but he didn’t hold a candle to this man. Every inch of him was perfectly sculpted as if the moon goddess took her time with him.
He was perfect—so bodily fine. She doubted there was any omega who didn’t have interest in him.
How lucky was his mate...
Eve blinked.
Oh wait, she was his mate. That was her.
Her hazel eyes narrowed into a grin as her lips stretched into a smile.
"Your turn." The man’s deepened rough voice snapped her back to reality and she began coughing frantically as if she had swallowed sawdust.
Malakai crinkled his brows at her, unsure what was wrong with her.
Eve cleared her throat. "What do I do?"
"Shoot. Give it a try." He nodded to the target.
"Are you sure...?" she whispered, "I don’t want to get hurt."
"You’ll be fine." He laughed. "Just try and hit the target. Forget about the bullseye."
Eve breathed out and fixed in the earmuff. She rolled her shoulder and aimed for the target a few feet away from her. Pulling the trigger, she fired, and it hit past the target. She staggered back at the weight of the shot, almost falling if not for Malakai who was behind in the blink of an eye, catching her by the shoulders.
"Are you okay?" he asked.
She exhaled and frantically nodded her head. "Yeah, I-I’m okay."
"Eve—"
"Teach me," she cut him off, tipping her head back to lock eyes with him.
The man raised a brow before he grinned.
"I intended to," he said, his voice gravelly, and grabbed her by the hips, shifting her to properly face the target.
He cupped her hands with his large ones, held the gun, and directly aimed for the target.
"Pay attention to my words." His chin dropped on her right shoulder, her body completely pressed against his solid frame.
Eve breathed in and out, eyes flickering rapidly.
"Keeping one eye closed will give a good aim, yes, but leave both eyes open. I want you to get used to that, so you don’t hesitate in a dangerous situation." He clarified, "When using a gun, you want to be able to visualize everything around you. Closing one eye limits your vision. Do you understand?"
She nodded.
Malakai gripped her waist with one of his hands, adjusted her, and pulled her even closer to him till her body was gummed to his. "Focus. Now aim...and...shoot."
Eve pulled the trigger and the bullet slammed right into the target, hitting the bullseye. It took a moment of heavy breathing before she took a proper look at the target, a huge smile painting itself on her face.
"I hit it..." she spoke as if she couldn’t hear herself.
Malakai’s hand came to her chin and he tipped her head back against his chest to look into her eyes. "Do you think you can handle it now without my guidance?"
She swallowed thickly.
