Eve, who’d been sitting in Malakai’s chair at his desk since he left the office, clicked rapidly on the keyboard of his computer. She typed out a bunch of code on the computer and picked up the paper she had by the side, scribbling into it with intense focus.
She didn’t even notice when Malakai walked into the office, closing the door. He paused on his step and slanted his head as he began staring at her.
He really missed the glasses, which he barely sees on her face now since she got her contact lenses.
Eve yawned and scratched into her hair before continuing from where she stopped, still yet to notice him. She reached for his cup of coffee he’d left half-drunk on the table before he went for his meeting. His gaze followed her movement as her lips wrapped the cup and she took a sip.
Eve shriveled up instantly at the bitterness and her face crinkled. Nonetheless, she never kept the coffee back. If anything, she took another sip and the chuckle he couldn’t hold back was what snapped her attention to him.
She seemed surprised to see him.
"Malakai?" She kept the cup back on the table. "How long have you been there?"
"Long enough to watch you pick up my coffee," he said as he approached her and walked over to stand behind her. He leaned down, enough that he could loom above her and stare at what she had on the screen of the computer.
"What are you doing?"
Eve blinked and swallowed, breathing out a soft breath at the feel of his hot breath fanning against the exposed skin of her ears and shoulder. "I..well I..." She shivered slightly as his breathing poured down her neck but she shook her head, unwilling to dwell on the awareness.
"I made a code for your company’s security."
"My company’s security?"
"Yes." She nodded. "The security is tighter now."
Malakai cocked a brow. "Why though? I don’t think there is any threat. Do you think there is?"
Eve glanced at him with a pondering expression and he grabbed the chair, spinning it to have her facing him. He gripped either armrest and leaned into her with a curious expression. "You’re worried about something, aren’t you?"
Her lashes batted frantically and she rapidly nodded, unable to hold eye contact with him. What was wrong with her since this morning? She lowered her head to hide the redness she knew was creeping up her face and Malakai who was a bit confused, tilted her chin up.
"Eve?"
Her breathing hitched. "I... I-it’s not like that. It’s just a thought I had."
"What thought?"
"The Morins."
"What about them?"
"They should be aware by now that the USB I gave them was a fake one."
"And?" He was unsure where this was going.
Eve bit into her bottom lip. "I have a feeling they have someone spying...someone to get the real USB which I have."
His brows crinkled harshly. "Are you sure about this?"
She shook her head. "Not really. It’s just a hunch I have. I mean, what else can they do, right? The USB is one they paid ten million weils for. Surely they wouldn’t just let me get away with it. And what is the best way to get it without going head-to-head with you?"
"Planting someone either in my company or in my home—"
"It’s here in your company," she blurted out.
Malakai paused. He blinked. "What?"
"It’s here in your company. It makes more sense for them to plant whoever it is in your company than your home. After all, if I wanted to hack into the file, where else would I do it, if not here in your company with an IT team."
It made sense—her words completely made sense to him.
He asked, "Who is it?"
"I don’t really know—"
"That’s not true. You already have a suspect, it’s written all over your face."
"Yes, but I don’t have anything to prove it," she said. "You’re going to have to give me the name list of your employees. I’ll figure it out if you can give me a day."
Malakai straightened up and ran his fingers through his loose hair. "Okay," he nodded but grabbed her hand.
"Where are we going?" Eve asked as he put his coat over her.
"Home." He glanced at his wristwatch. "It’s already six. We can’t stay here any longer. You’ve got to eat."
Malakai proceeded down to the first floor of the company and the very second they stepped out through the exit, they were swarmed by the reporters who were already lined up in front of the company.
"Mr. Basti."
"Mrs. Basti, have you got anything to say to us concerning Patro Zolotov’s claim?"
Another shoved a mic into her face. "Is it all true? Is that why you’re keeping quiet and making no effort to refute his claim."
Malakai’s expression darkened and his grip on Eve’s hand tightened. Though no one noticed, his eyes had switched between golden and black and back to golden. The claws of his other hands lengthened and he was near tearing every single one of them apart like the monster he was—the person he was hiding from the pack and Eve herself.
Supreme alpha he was—but that didn’t mean he wasn’t a kind of beast compared to what a normal alpha should be and—
Gasps flew.
He turned his head.
Eve had slapped away the mic of one of the reporters. Her face was painted in so much anger, her chest rising and falling in heavy breathing. 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶
"Mrs. Basti, this is—"
"What is your problem?" she questioned. "What do you want to know? Whether I cheated on Patro or not?"
Malakai knew she was about to lose it and he’d tried to stop her. "Eve—"
"Who cares? I chose Malakai over him. So what? Got a problem with that? I DON’T CARE!" she snapped. "I am ambitious, I chose someone better than him. I am such an oh-so-bad omega, but so what? Malakai Basti is my husband, I am legally married to him and if there is anything Patro Zolotov should do, it is to move on."
"Get out of MY WAY!" She snatched Malakai’s hand and dragged him along with him towards the car. The man was so stunned that he followed subconsciously, unable to say a word.
He knew she was eventually going to lose her temper—just not to that extent.
They got into the car and the first thing Eve did was to breathe out and then panic settled inside of her. "Oh goddess, I shouldn’t have done that, right?"
