When Elowen came to be, blinking her eyes open, she felt herself strapped to a chair. Her head was tiredly slumped forward and with all the strength she could muster, she raised her gaze toward the dim light bulb above.
"Ugh." She grunted at the weird banging feeling in her head—one she’d never felt before. "Where am I?" she asked, hoping that someone would answer her and they did.
"Took you a while." The voice was familiar—too familiar. "For a few moments, I’d assumed you were dead."
Elowen’s body shook in fright. She was afraid—too scared to raise her head to the man she knew was approaching her.
"Oh, look at me, Elowen. I can feel your wolf trembling. There is nothing to be scared of, you know. It’s not as if I have the intention to kill you." 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶
Her breathing was rapid, her wolf was whimpering so much that even if she wanted to shift at that very moment, she wouldn’t be able to. She lifted her head, slowly until she could look at the full figure of the man who stood in front of her, a wooden chair in his grip.
Patro...
He was in a casual brown striped suit, matching the brown of his short hair, his undercuts freshly cut.
A smile tugged at his lips, and he sat down on the stool, manspreading before resting his elbows on his knees.
"Didn’t think we’d meet so soon, did you?" he asked.
"Mr. Zolotov, please don’t. Don’t do this. I-I haven’t done anything wrong to you," she said to him.
Patro shrugged. "I never said you did. Or did you?"
Elowen stared at him.
"Please... Just let me go."
"And why should I?" He interlocked his fingers. "You were called several times for days and I expected you to answer, but you never did. Why is that? Were you avoiding me?"
"It’s not like that—"
"Then what is it, Elowen?" He snatched her by the chin. "You knew why I was calling, but you were unwilling to answer because you’d gone behind my back and made a deal with Malakai."
Elowen scowled at him. "Gone behind your back? Respectfully, that makes no sense, Mr. Zolotov. Your family is influential, yes, but you do not own my firm."
"But I do—"
"No, you don’t. My firm is a solo company that operates on its own. We are not owned by anyone and we decide who we work with," she affirmed. "Malakai Basti came first, we served him first. Nothing is unfair here, Mr. Zolotov."
Patro stared at her and suddenly burst into laughter as if he found her words comical. He laughed so crazily, to the point that Elowen got confused.
What exactly was so funny?
"Do you know the problem with people like you?" Patro questioned. "You really lack survival instincts."
"Not to mention, you remind me of someone," he added, his expression growing chilly. "Omegas like you make me angry. I am Patro Zolotov and I always get what I want as long as I desire it. You’ve been working with my family for a while now, I think you should have that idea by now."
The man bent a little to peer at her face with his head tilted. "You said your firm is solo and works under no one, right?"
"Correct," Elowen responded, despite the fear in her tone.
He let out a soft chuckle. "There is something I want you to do for me."
She stared at him.
"Terminate whatever deal you have with Malakai. From today, you will be working for my family. Don’t worry, your firm will be paid fully and constantly. I won’t cheat you, you know."
Elowen shook her head. "That’s a generous offer, Mr. Zolotov. But I’m sorry to let you know that I can’t do that."
Patro cocked a brow at her. He let out a chuckle, amused, and plucked out his phone from his pocket. He browsed through it for a few seconds and turned the screen towards her.
Elowen’s heart nearly jumped out of her chest and she quickly met his eyes. "W-what is the meaning of this?"
Patro smiled softly. "What a cute little girl. Makes me want to have my own daughter. You love her don’t you?" he asked, glancing at her. "Or...maybe not?"
"Don’t you dare, Patro!!" she shouted at him. "Don’t you dare hurt my little girl!"
"Hmm, I thought so." He shrugged and crossed his legs. "Even if your mate doesn’t care much for either you or your daughter, you love her and you would do anything for her. Isn’t that right, Elowen?"
She couldn’t answer him. She swallowed, flickering her eyes in obvious fear.
"Patro... Patro, please, no. I beg you. S-she’s everything I have."
Patro blinked. "I never said I was going to hurt your daughter. Little pups are innocent. But if I hurt you, who will care for her? Is it your mate? Her deadbeat father? Eh..."
"Patro..." she breathed out.
"Did you think that just because your firm is the most influential, you are on top of the world? That you are above the Zolotovs?"
Wetness built up in Elowen’s eyes
"You’re making me seem like a monster now, Elowen." He pinched between his brows and rubbed his temple.
"See, I don’t want to hurt you, but the thing is that I have a score to settle and you’re just going to get in my way. I need you to cancel your deal with Malakai. I want your firm under me. If you can do that for me, you and your daughter will be perfectly fine. How does that sound?"
The bubble of pained tears in her eyes broke, but she held his gaze.
"You’ve got to understand this situation. You give me what I want and I won’t bother your life. If I don’t do this, you’ll just end up interfering with mine and that will really just piss me off. If you were any of those small firms out there, I wouldn’t care, but TUD is huge—the most sought after."
"You’ll do this for me, won’t you?" he asked.
Elowen slowly nodded. "Yes..."
"I’ll do it."
