Xie Family Village had just received a verbal message from her parents when Lu Aijiao personally came to speak with Lu Aimei.

“Your sister is here.”

Upon seeing Lu Aijiao enter, Lu Aimei’s mother-in-law softly greeted her, pointing towards the inner room, “Dabao and Xiaobao are sleeping soundly. You can just go in.”

“Okay,” Lu Aijiao whispered back with a smile, “Auntie, it’s actually nothing serious. My parents sent a message asking us sisters to go back home tomorrow, so our cousin can get to know the family.”

“You should go back and see them, everything is fine now, right?” Lu Aimei’s mother-in-law nodded. She had heard about the chaotic mess that Lu Aiguo’s wedding had turned into a few days ago. Especially since her daughter-in-law had come back fuming and scolded the Su Family, and her son had to spend a long time trying to calm things down. With this news, her gossip instinct took over, and she quickly pressed for more information.

“What happened afterward? Is the child okay? Poor thing, it’s still her own grandmother, after all. If it were me, I couldn’t have been so heartless. In my eyes, Xiaobao is just like Dabao.”

“Isn’t it rare for someone to praise you as such an open-minded and good mother-in-law?” Lu Aijiao complimented her, immediately bringing a broad smile to Lu Aimei’s mother-in-law’s face.

“Since my parents told us sisters to go back home, they must be okay now, right? If there were any problems, they wouldn’t be in the mood to send someone to call specially.”

“That’s true. But your in-laws are genuinely kind to that cousin of yours,” Lu Aimei’s mother-in-law commented with a smile, “You’d better go in. I won’t keep you sisters from chatting.”

“Okay.”

Lu Aijiao entered Lu Aimei’s room with a smile.

The two sisters had married one after the other into the same village.

In fact, it was Lu Aijiao who originally took a liking to Lu Aimei’s in-laws and set up the connection for her sister.

After marrying into the family and personally observing the character, personality, and capabilities of her brother-in-law Xie Changgen, as well as carefully watching his family for a long time, she found that this family was indeed of good nature and not involved in too many messy affairs. Only then did she go back to her parents and talk about it. With their approval, she arranged for her sister and future brother-in-law to meet, ultimately leading to their marriage.

Lu Aijiao saw Lu Aimei sitting on the edge of the bed, sewing shoe soles. With the bed curtain blocking the thick quilt, the two children, wearing red bellybands, were sleeping sweetly, spread out on the bed.

“These kids change every single day; they’re getting cuter and more lovable.”

“Isn’t that the truth? It’s just a shame that both came at once, and I don’t have enough breast milk for them, so I have to make do with rice soup. Look at the kids; they’ve gotten skinny. Last month, Changgen finally managed to bring back a bag of wheat dextrin, but now it’s all finished. I wanted to get him to try and find some more, but wheat dextrin isn’t that easy to come by.”

Lu Aimei cast a loving glance at the children on the bed, and as she spoke, she couldn’t help but sigh.

“That’s a dilemma, but luckily the child is growing up, and we can add an egg each day,” Lu Aijiao whispered in persuasion. “You were blessed with twins at once, who wouldn’t envy that? As days go by, you’ll blink, and the children will have grown up.”

“An egg every day… Huh,” Lu Aimei snorted with a sneer, “Changgui’s eldest sister-in-law watches everything like a hawk. My mother-in-law has to be mindful of her and can’t be too obvious. Once in a while, she’ll make an egg, and that has to be split between four kids. If I hadn’t watched them like a hawk last month, the barley malt syrup would’ve been good if even half a bag made it to Dabao and Xiaobao’s mouths.”

Xie Changgui had an older brother, and their family hadn’t split yet. His older brother also had two kids, the eldest being nine and the youngest five. The eldest sister-in-law was a shrewd woman who hated to be at a disadvantage. Their grandparents were nice people, but in truth, they still favored the eldest son more.

“Every household has its own set of difficult scriptures to chant. Don’t mention it; talking about it only flattens my mood,” Lu Aimei curled her lip, “Even our parents, honestly. Aiguo is merely their nephew from their youngest brother’s family, yet during his wedding, they treated it as if their own son was getting married, being attentive and caring in every aspect, no less than when their youngest got married.”

Thinking of how her parents favored Aiguo, Lu Aimei felt deeply aggrieved, “Take the day they gave the monetary wedding gift, for instance. They just had to inquire and eventually insisted we give the same amount as when the youngest got married. How can blood brothers and cousins be the same?”

“It’s always been this way. When was Aiguo ever short of good things? Once, I even saw our mom secretly passing an egg to Aiguo. Her own children hadn’t eaten, yet she gave it to her nephew. Can you really call that maternal love?”

The more Lu Aimei spoke, the angrier she got. “If you ask me, the more eagerly they wait for me, the less I want to visit.”

Actually, just yesterday Lu Aijiao guessed that Aiguo would bring his wife to acknowledge his kin, so she came to invite Lu Aimei to return to their maternal home together. However, Lu Aimei refused to go.

“How can you still be so stubborn when you’ve already given birth to two kids?” Lu Aijiao was so exasperated she slapped her hand.

“You know very well what Aiguo is like. Our parents are so heartfully devoted to him, and he treats us even better than others. Didn’t he always make sure to save the best for us? Didn’t he give way to you when you were a child? What have you lost to feel so unjust about him? As an older sister, why can you never see him in a good light?”

“I just don’t like him, all because dad and mom are so blatantly partial to him,” Lu Aimei glared resentfully. “Only you are so forgiving to see him as a blood brother.”

“He actually is blood-related,” Lu Aijiao couldn’t help but let the truth slip in a very low voice.

“What did you say?” Lu Aimei pricked her hand with the needle she was holding, startled nearly to the point of shouting before Lu Aijiao quickly covered her mouth, “Keep it down.”

“Sis, what’s really going on? Tell me quickly,” Lu Aimei pushed away Lu Aijiao’s hand, asking anxiously.

“You know you had a twin brother, right?” Lu Aijiao stared into Lu Aimei’s eyes, not intending to tell her, but seeing her grow more resentful towards Aiguo each day, she felt she could no longer keep silent.

“Of course, I know, the whole village knows our little brother died when he was half a year old,” Lu Aimei once felt regret about it.

“Our little brother is actually Aiguo. The one who died was our third uncle’s son. Aiguo, in fact, is our parents’ firstborn son.” Lu Aijiao spoke softly, looking down, and remembered how their mother couldn’t control her tears and how their father stood silently beside her, tears streaming down his face.

She was already seven years old at the time and could understand and remember what the adults said.

“But… wasn’t he our mother’s first boy? How could he…” Lu Aimei was completely dumbfounded.

No wonder her older sister had always told her not to argue with Aiguo, not to speak ill of him in front of their parents. No wonder their parents treated their “nephew” better than their own daughter, even her younger brother had to step back.
