Marcus Spencer put the orb down after he was done talking with the shopkeeper.
The man he had observed through the orb had a masking spell on him, which made it impossible to tell his real face. But the spell must not have been that strong if Marcus could still tell that it was someone he recognized.
Since it was such a sloppy disguise, it had to be someone famous but not powerful enough to be able to buy the "good" stuff.
He let out a frustrated sigh as soon as he was alone, and his handsome face twisted into an angry frown.
"How dare that fool get caught? I gave him this job because that scammer assured me he would not be found out by anyone. This would be a disaster if someone were to discover I was involved in this mess."
Marcus Spencer was a new noble who had gained his title through wealth. So his standing in noble society was shaky at best. Most people sneered at him because he had bought his rank rather than earning it through merit.
And that was why he had opened a lot of shady businesses to earn even more profit in a short amount of time. His goal was to bury the other nobles beneath his wealth to the point that they would not even be able to raise their heads against him.
He was close to reaching that goal, but now this new obstacle had been thrown in his way.
"I need to do something fast. I am sure a hired mercenary would do the trick just fine."
Give those people some money, and they would agree to do anything, even assassinate the king for him. And money was something Marcus Spencer did not lack.
So he picked up his discarded orb once more, and after schooling his expression, he made another call.
The person on the other side answered within ten seconds.
"Ah! If it isn’t our dear client, Sir Marcus. What can we help you with today?"
The person asked in a falsely cheerful voice.
"Drop the act and get your best people ready. I have a new job that I want finished today. I will give you double your standard rate."
Marcus made the offer, wanting everyone on the case as soon as possible. But the mercenary captain on the other side did not agree immediately.
"Sir, most of our people are already out working right now. You do understand that merely double the original rate will not cut it. After all, I will lose trust with my existing clients if I take your deal."
Marcus Spencer knew the mercenary leader well, and he could tell when the man was lying. But this request was not something worth souring their relationship over.
If the other side wanted money, then Marcus would give it to them.
"Fine. How about triple the market rate? That should cover the additional expenses as well as any refunds you have to give out."
"Of course, sir! We will take your order. Please tell me the details about the person you want to make disappear."

Kael decided to walk around the town a little more after the incident with the fake magic shop.
The right thing to do would be to report the shop and have it shut down for trying to trick the public, but Kael had no intention of doing that.
First, he was not a hero or a public officer. He had no obligation to help others.
And second, that shop was so low-level that if you were getting scammed there, you deserved to lose your money. The only exceptions were desperate people who could no longer tell right from wrong.
But again, it was not something Kael needed to handle.
"Let’s take some bread home and get going. Being in this town for too long gives me a headache."
There were too many noises around, and Kael was beginning to feel fatigued.
He had sharp senses due to his high mana concentration, but that came with its own problems. The market had too many people for him to wander around aimlessly for long.
Lyra was also getting overstimulated, but in a different way than Kael.
She was tugging at her leash and growling at strangers. She was also trying to destroy a few stalls by jumping at them, mostly the ones selling demon by-products.
Kael tugged at Lyra’s leash to tell her that it was time to head back, but she ignored him and made another leap at a nearby stall.
She made it all the way to the table and even managed to touch it before Kael pulled her back and decided to carry her in his arms.
"Stop trying to destroy everything. Otherwise, I will have to lock you in your room. And don’t try to bite me either."
Kael’s body had a protective spell on it, so it only hurt Lyra when she tried to bite his arm.
Despite that, she continued trying to chew on him to show her disagreement.
"Tsk, you have one hell of a pup, kid. If I were you, I would get rid of it and get something more obedient."
The shopkeeper whose stall Lyra had almost destroyed spoke in an annoyed voice. His eyes were glaring daggers at Lyra the entire time, and the only thing protecting the small pup right now was Kael’s presence.
Kael did not like the way the man suggested he should get a better pet. It felt disrespectful toward Lyra as well.
She was not the best pet in the world, but that was because she was the cursed Demon Queen. It was not her fault that she was stuck in this form.
He knew it was not the shopkeeper’s fault either. The man was simply venting his frustration at Lyra because she had caused it.
As a psychiatrist, Kael understood that.
But as Lyra’s current owner, he did not want to understand the shopkeeper.
So he decided to leave before he could do something petty. Unfortunately, his magic did not get the memo, and it caused the man’s kiosk to collapse, making the shopkeeper gasp in shock and anger.
’Well, I was not supposed to do that. I guess the shopkeeper should consider this his karma for making fun of a cursed and disabled person.’
Kael quickly made his way back before he could cause any more trouble.
This much was enough.
’Now, what should I do about the people who have started following me?’
